Sunday Morning Thoughts--Post Ohio

1. What I wanted to see in this game was accomplished. Nebraska took on an inferior but somewhat talented opponent, wore them down, and dominated the second half after a largely forgettable first half. Second-half dominance is what wins football games in the B1G, and although Ohio is not a conference-level opponent, we can only play against the schedule we're given. Ohio is certainly a big upgrade from Akron or Houston Christian.

2. Against Ohio, Colandrea was not reckless with the balI. We've been led to believe he's a "gunslinger" who throws dangerous passes, but I thought he looked mature and controlled. I loved the play where he patiently waited for Mekhi Nelson to get open, got him the ball, and Mekhi powered through multiple defenders for the score.

3. Penalties in the first half were far too common, although the one that resulted in a called-back touchdown was highly questionable. Most of the others were obvious mental errors that are common in a first game. Nine total flags will negate whatever chances we might have against ranked B1G teams. Nebraska made plenty of mistakes, but so did the officials. The "catch" on Ohio's two-point conversion was quite shaky.

4. Did you all notice a number of high snaps? It didn't seem like the ball was getting to Colandrea smoothly. On one or two, I had flashbacks to the Cam Jurgens days. No net damage.

5. Overall, I think it was a good start and about what I expected. I thought this game would be close for a half and that Nebraska's superior depth and talent would make it a rout in the second half. Still much improvement needed, but a good starting point.

Here's hoping my first game in person next week since Frost's last game (the Georgia Southern debacle) will make for an enjoyable day in Lincoln! GBR

I noticed that too, Huusker.

I'd say that's a pretty safe bet. :)

Tarleton State upset Bowling Green, 20-13.

As I was typing my response earlier in this thread I KNEW there was something I had thought of, but couldn't for the life of me, remember what it was--and the high snaps were it.

So yes, Huusker I did notice and thank you for mentioning that. I'm sure Geep Wade will fix that high snap issue and we won't see it going forward.

I've heard AC compared to various QB's but Joe Ganz is who he reminds me of.

Obviously quicker than Ganz, but Joe was way more accurate. Colandrea is all over the place and struggled to find the handle on the ball. One of his releases was an obvious bad grip. However, most of his throws were nowhere close to an ideal placement. He is not a good passing QB and I won't pretend he is. Lateef on the other hand is both a runner and accurate. I want to see him back in the line up and let Colandrea earn the position. Rhule kind of sucks with disappointing players when they perform poorly. Osborne was with Frost a little bit but otherwise some of our past QBs under Osborne had to win the job. I want to see the guy improve in game two or he needs the hook.

I disagree.
Consider this an "unlike".

Your kidding right? Lateef had one good game the rest sucked.
Anthony Colandrea won the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year award and was named First Team All-Mountain West during his 2025 season at UNLV.

Only saw 1st quarter...hottest game I ever attended. Had to keep granddaughter out of it, down at Tunnel Walk area.
Hey Doc, were you concerned about possible heat stroke?
I was prepared to spend the whole game in the sun. Mrs Fumble had sent me off with sun screen, and plenty of water.

I didn't expect what happened. Sitting in Row 34 of East Stadium we were in the shade until the start of the fourth quarter. I don't recall this ever happening before from these seats for an 11 am game.

Once the fourth quarter started, I understood why fans were bailing. Yikes, it was brutal.

You were wise to protect your granddaughter, GIJoe. My son and I survived until the end. But it was hard to imagine how the players on the field handled it. The game narrative was that the Huskers wore Ohio down by the fourth quarter. None of the reports mentioned it but I suspect we had a serious assist from the sun. :) ;)

TJ was 45/89 the last 3 games of last season. That is a Chair over 50%. Not sure that would be classified as "accurate" by any metric. He had a terrific game against UCLA. After that, he was well below average both rushing and throwing. He ran the ball 24 times for 39 yards in the last 3 games last year. Colandrea is starting for a reason.

I'm not sold on PPF grades but AC's were the best of anyone who played Saturday--even slightly better than Jamal Rule's. The play where Anthony rolled out from the endzone for a thirty yard strike to Gilmer at the boundary was spectacular.

In my opinion, that's AC's secret power: He throws well on the run.

I bought 8 waters to start game for 4 of us...after I came up for a few minutes during halftime...they were all gone. Granddaughter got to play some FB on the tunnel walk, some "high-fives", and pics...So all in all I didn't care, as I had DVR for game on anyway.

I didn't think it was necessary for Herbie to "flip me off" though. :)

To be clear Doc, I mean no disrespect to TJ. Heck, I was calling for him to get playing time last year when the Wunderkind was getting sacked (unnecessarily at times) over and over. But we can't ignore stats and say he is a more accurate passer and better runner when we have 3 consecutive games of data that show otherwise.

Like you, I think Colandrea has the "it" factor we haven't had in a QB in 10+ years. In fairness, time will tell what he is capable of against B1G competition soon, but I like what I have seen so far.

I like TJ and have defended him (somewhat unsuccessfully) last year. He got the dogsnot beaten out of him and kept coming back and tried to make plays. Re-watch those three losses, especially Penn State, and you will see the entire Defense just pouring past our Oline and blasting him repeatedly. Tom Brady couldn't function well under those conditions (See the SB when his undefeated team faced the Giants, pressure screwed him up).
Having said that, AC is the better QB. No doubt. But I'm thrilled to have TJ as the backup, he's very good.
