Bo had some good pieces his first year (Suh). He built on that fairly well Years 2 & 3 - after that his lazy recruiting approach was starting to show up.
Well said, Jimbosc. I liked Bo and loved the way his program started out. But the thing about Bo that concerned me early on was what you just said:
his attitude towards recruiting. It was always a 'necessary evil' to him. It's one thing to have a distain for recruiting as a DC but if you're the head coach, you've got to LOVE recruiting or your program is going to eventually suffer.
I was initially enthusiastic when I saw that Mike Riley was giving renewed focus to recruiting. But he had a soft, West Coast-ish style that was a horrible fit with: a) Nebraska; and b) the Big Ten. But Bo's 'parting gift' to the program was his "burn every bridge" exit. I still shake my head in disbelief at how it all went down. In my opinion, Bo holds some responsibility for all the crap that happened afterwards.
I also agree with Cigarman that we kept 'Golden Boy' Frost three years longer than we should have. Everybody knows that I'm a certified sunshine-pumper, but I saw serious signs that the Frost era wasn't going to work out in Year One. Combine the end of the Pelini era with the Riley fiasco and then five years of "don't believe what you're seeing, we're almost there" Frost and that's how one of the best programs in the nation became arguably The Worst.
Has Rhule made mistakes? You bet, in fact quite a few of them. But what gives me hope is that Coach Rhule owns them, he doesn't double-down on them. He's smart and he's inspiring--and has a track record of pulling sad sack programs out of the mud. You'd have thought that history-rich Nebraska would've been a cakewalk compared to Baylor after a program-killing scandal but our Powers-that-Be created quite the mess here.
The waters have gotten choppy and we've got some folks abandoning ship. Yeah, I admit, things are rough right now but I have faith we have a savvy, sea-worthy Captain.
I'm planning to stick with him through hell and high waters.
