I would have fired Mike Riley after the loss to Directional Illinois, but since that didn't happen...

If Mike Riley wants to be the head coach of Nebraska in 2018, he absolutely has to win out. That would put NU at 8-4 and while I wouldn't like it personally, it would justify one more year.

What if, for argument's sake, Nebraska wins out, starts playing more physical, not soft, not cowardly, not soft....runs the ball every down... stops playing so soft and plays with heart in all their victories and not so soft and cowardly....would you welcome Mike Riley back then? Or was the loss to Directional Illinios the last straw because they played so soft?

Post 40 is what has me confused. It would "justify" one more year but you wouldn't like it personally...whose justification are you referring to? I was thinking if they would just stop playing so soft and cowardly you would be back on board...especially if they win out!

Because the program (and its success) is more important than my feelings about who the head coach is. There are also pragmatic considerations about W/L record which need to be accounted for. So while I personally want Mike Riley gone, I acknowledge that there are legitimate circumstances where keeping him for 2018 would be justified. And winning out, finishing 8-4 in the regular season, fits within the "keep him" justification.

I'd like to ask

"How many more wins does Riley need for you (the poster) to want him to come back" or

"How many more wins do you think it will take for ADBM to retain Riley"

I guess I'm slightly confused by some of the answers.

Ok for me it would take us winning all but Penn St. And playing Penn St. Tough deep into the final min of the 4th quarter before they recover a fumble or get an interception to seal the deal .

On the other hand for Moos to get behind Riley and give him a couple more seasons to really get his deal installed and the kind of players he needs to make it all work
I would say the same record as what I want to see before I will give him a hall pass...
win all but the Penn St. Game and play Penn St. like we should play every team..... competitive !!!!

I see where you're coming from Doc, but honestly...with the way Nebraska has played this season against lowly competition, and been having bent over a barrel by Wisconsin and Ohio State...merely playing Penn State "tough" and losing at the end isn't enough. This is year three. Mike Riley needs to win out, in my opinion, to save his job.

Good answer...and welcome back 94

loose any more than that and the sun will set on the "Riley Experience".....
A name that I'm fairly sure is on the short last of our new A.D. is and should be Les Miles....not alot has been said about him other than a passing gesture or so but he is a viable candidate for the job and I'm sure is more than a little interested in coaching at dear ol NU

Doc.

The biggest issue I have with Miles is age--he is 63--if hired, likely only here 3-5 years, and his age will be used against him in recruiting from day one

They cant talk to Frost until his season is over without the permission of UCF, if I understand the rules correctly. So it may have to be later than Dec 20 if UCF says no. Not likely but they could.

They can't talk to SF, but the will certainly talk with his agent

For me, I'm torn between winning out and don't want him back regardless--we are 3-4 right now, with blowout losses to OSU and Wisconsin, a loss to a MAC school, gave 42 points in a half to Oregon, and were a inches away from being in OT with Ark St---But on the plus side, we beat the two worst teams in the Big 10. Riley has fired about 1/2 of his staff in the last 3 years, which just tells me he made lousy hiring decisions

At this point, I would not be surprised if we finished 3-9, but if somehow we limped home with a 6-6 or 7-5 record, it's just not good enough, and I have seen nothing to make me think it will get better

People keep talking about giving him more time--Well the guy at Syracuse (in his second year) beat Miami last year and Clemson this year---think their roster has more talent than ours--In his 3rd year, Matt Cambell at ISU beat Oklahoma and TTech--think they had more talent on their roster?

If somehow he were to win out, I would consider another year, but I just can't see any long term success with MR as HC

Doc,

Les Miles is NOT the answer and I hope that the powers that be aren't heading his direction.

I like Les Miles, I think he's a great guy, but his offenses stunk at LSU and he had his pick of the 5* litter while at LSU. So if he couldn't get 5* offensive talent to execute at a high/consistent level...what chance does he have with the mostly 3*s (and few 4*s) he'll get in Lincoln?

I picked 4-1, with a respectable loss to Penn State. In truth however, I would guess that Moos has a predisposition one way or another, and that the record just might be used to justify his decision. If we win out, as 94 said in another thread, it would take the decision out of Moos' hands. So would losing out. But any thing in between is open to interpretation, and this is where outside influences might come into play.

Beating Purdue, imo, won't keep Riley's job, but I think losing to Purdue might cost him the same. I have little doubt that should we lose this one, which I don't think we will, then Moos will begin reaching out to his "short list". At this point, who says yes and who says no will most likely play into his decision as much, if not more, than Riley's record.

Moos's commentary in his 1620 interview shed some light on what his expectations are. He said Washington State was a rebuild and that Nebraska is not. He said all the pieces are in place and that he's seen and met some of the players and that they look pretty good to him. That sounded like a not so veiled jab at Riley to me. That combined with his comment about Chip Kelly's offense at Oregon being what he thinks is the hardest to stop makes it a steep hill to climb for HCMR I think.

I really hope Les isn't in the running. He's a great recruiter, but in my opinion, an average at best coach. He'd be a Callahan 2.0. The main reason for his success at LSU, he just had better Jimmies and Joes for the most part.

I've got a short list of coaches I'd love to see in Lincoln, if Riley does leave. #1 would be Matt Campbell, his buy-out is stupid, but I'd want him first, if we have to make a change, he would be one I would hope would be on Moos' short list.

Part in red. I would take a great recruiter who plays for conference and national championships over one who loses to Northern Illinoins and Illinois and Purdue.

Don't get me wrong here I was just saying that his name probably should be on the short list....he knows this area having coached at Okie St. And would have some good contacts .....should he be "thee guy".....that's not for me to say....
Personally I always thought his sideline and press conference antics were a bit off of center....leaning more towards the really bizarre but there seems to be a lot of people who relate to him real easily and he can get big time guys to coach for him and play for him....I was just saying his name should be in the mix at least.

Callahan wasn't. And Les in Lincoln would be the same thing as Callahan. A lot of great athletes and a system that can't win. And Les won't get the same caliber players he was getting at LSU where they could overcome bad coaching. With Les, we'd still be sitting behind Wiscy in the West and would get rolled by PSU and OSU from the East. Michigan and MSU would be most likely losses as well.

Riley is soft in his approach. Dorf hasn't a clue about running the football. If they haven't learned by now......., well you know. Riley isn't getting any younger. Besides, for myself it's about development or the lack there of. There is no reason when so many want to walk on and stay five years, that development can't happen. We are always short on numbers. Shouldn't ever happen at Nebraska.

I feel like the damage is done when it comes to Riley - part of me wants him given a chance - another year, the other part just wants this chapter to end, the season to be over, and to just move on and get the next guy in here and give him his shot.....

As long as you have the crystal ball out, could you get me the winning numbers from tomorrows powerball. Les Miles was 10 times the coach Callahan was.
