Multiple rumblings

I personally don't know any ADs, but you really think so?

What does it matter if it's Riley or someone else. Either way, it still isn't the "new guy's" hire, it would take all of the pressure off of him if the next coach (if already decided on/hired) doesn't work out.

This only works if the HC is hired first. If the AD is announced a month before the HC it gives the impression the AD made the choice. Hard to
imagine a scenario in which the AD says “Scott is our guy. President Bounds and Chancellor Greene began the process back in October prior to my arrival and I am thrilled to be working with this administration to make Nebraska a winner again”

I’m sure purely rumor. But I’ll say this, I hope the new AD isn’t hired to fire someone. That hasn’t worked out for us lately!

So if they’re firing the HC, hopefully they’ll do it before the new AD is named. That way he gets a clean slate to start with. Only agenda coming in with is returning this football program back to relevance (at least as it pertains to football).

There is absolutely zero chance that a quality AD will come to Lincoln with an iron clad mandate to fire the HC this year. We're not dealing with Harvey anymore. Bounds and Green will handle this professionally and I don't believe for a second that they have already decided that Riley is out this year. If Riley can haul in a top recruiting class, they may actually be okay with letting it ride for another year. In fact, I think it is much more likely that they will tell the new AD to conduct a full evaluation of the football program and that won't be done in a month.

I do believe both Bounds and Green wanted Eichorst out even before this season started. If you talk with many of the rank and file folks in the athletic department, they will tell you that Eichorst and Witty (resigned today) were not well liked. Before this past year, Eichorst was barely even known to most. That's on top of his recent screw ups like the quick reversal on his Black Friday stance. The 1-2 start provided great cover to fire Eichorst. That said, I truly believe they are looking for a respected football guy at AD that can size up the program from top to bottom. Shoot me if you want, but I would be willing to bet that Riley will be back next year with an ultimatum. The 2018 schedule is going to be a helluva test for any head coach. Does a new AD want to bring in a new coach and system to face that right off the bat? Will a high quality HC candidate want to come into this situation that has depth issues at several positions, a fractured recruiting class (remembering that there is an early signing period this year) and roll immediately in to the toughest schedule the Huskers have faced in years? It seems to make much more sense to start over with a new HC, if that's the way it's going to go, after the 2018 season.

I'd like to know who these well funded RUN THE BALL GUYS think that coach actually is. Are you getting Shaw away from Stanford? No way. Who? One of the academy coaches who runs the triple option? Ugh. Paul Johnson? Another ugh. Not ragging on you Doc. Just hoping that these guys who think they should have this level of influence don't screw it up for the rest of us.

When I read what Doc posted, my heart skipped a beat. I certainly hope that's the direction this goes because we've already seen the craptastic WCO / "balance" enough and it's put NU where it is now.

What exactly are you hoping for out of this? A pass happy offense?! Seen it; barfed on it; tossed it to the side. Was the 80s and 90s screwed up to you?! What is wrong with smash mouth football?

What you said about Eichorst is what (little) I heard. Stuff like trying to stiff Cook his bonus for winning the conference.

The problem I have with the above scenario (having Riley back in '18) is a couple of things - 1) Unless he somehow turns this season around and has a winning record, he's already perceived as a lame duck. Negative recruiting will be brutal and 2018 will be viewed as a toss away season. When was the last time NU had 2 losing seasons in a row? Late fifties, early sixties?! Everyone's painting this as a 'make or break' time (I don't necessarily think it's that dire, but it is important) so I can't see anyone in power letting this backslide any worse than it is. And 2) The sellout will most assuredly be in danger. We've all heard the stories about how there seem to be many season tickets holders not wanting to come to the game and some fans not even watching. (blasphemy!) If NU has a losing season THIS year and doesn't bring in a new guy NEXT year, where's the hope gonna come from?! And if the U and department are as paranoid about the streak, as we've heard, they are gonna do whatever they can to make sure that people have something to hope on.

Not hoping for a pass happy offense. What I am hoping for is that the best candidates available are considered. I would not arbitrarily reduce the pool with some restriction on offensive style being reminiscent of the glory days.

Whoever is the next A.D. I hope they have full firing and hiring power. Also if Riley is kept that is fine, however we need to be prepared for the sellout streak to end if Riley has a losing season. As a season ticket holder it's getting harder and harder to want to go to games knowing/expecting them to lose. Fire needs to be infused into this team and Athletic Department. I don't think that's going to come from a 64 year old coach. It'll come from a young up and comer. Frost has that fire and passion to be great. Which is why he's been so successful in his first year and a half at UCF. We'll see how the rest of his season goes, but they are currently ranked #22 in the nation and haven't been in any close game to date. Also I don't care who the next coach is and what offense or defense they run as long as they WIN baby. Winning cures all ails. Competing for and winning titles solidifies them.

Regarding your first point. If the new AD doesn't fire Riley, he's going to have to come out with some show of public support. That should be enough to keep the bulk of the recruiting class intact. At the very least, the class will be much better than it would be if Riley is fired and a new HC has to start from scratch in late December or early January. The 2018 season will then have to play out. It's a brutal schedule, but if NU can win out at home and pick off a couple of those tough road games, who knows?

Your second point is also a good one as it brings up a reality that the university has to face. The sellout streak has been artificially propped up for quite a while and if they keep capacity close to 90,000, it's almost certainly going to end soon (possibly next season). A big name, new hire might keep it alive for a year, but it's likely delaying the inevitable. The home schedule next season is pretty bad (Akron, Colorado, Troy, Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan State). That, combined with low expectations, could very well bring the streak to an end no matter what other changes are made. Most know that the sellout streak started in 1962 when Devaney replaced Bill Jennings after 5 straight losing seasons. It marked the dawn of a new era of Husker football and it has lasted far longer than anyone could have predicted. It felt great when fans were desperate to witness the history being made inside Memorial Stadium. Now, most fans just want to witness consistently good football. The sellout streak feels like it has become an albatross that MUST be artificially protected by ADs, administrators, and corporate donations. There's no doubt that losing the streak would be a shock to the program. Perhaps the heart of Nebraska football needs this jolt?

Having absolutely ZERO inside information and watching from afar ... I actually like the fact that it is so silent in Lincoln regarding the AD search. Not really a new take here but, I much prefer silence than the endless, incorrect speculation (& leaks). Maybe, just maybe, there a now a few capable professionals in charge that fully understand the importance of returning the Husker football to a consistent Top 25 tier football program.

In my opinion, the type of AD (and possibly coach) that I think we want would also understand the importance of being silent during the process. Just my 2-cents...

Welcome to the best Husker board on the interwebs Cardinal.

Like a Catholic Cardinal is addressed.

It's a terrible attempt at humor on a humorless night, in a dark, ugly, doomed world devoid of any and all hope.

Sorry. My bad.

You guys are aware Frost is winning on someone else's recruits...He need to prove that he can win on HIS recruits....so until he does I hope for the program we don't make him the next HC!!

Well he would have to win on someone elses recruits when he gets here, no matter when he comes. So I guess as long as he can win on someone elses lets let him get some wins the next three years on Mikes and then we can find out what he can do with his.

I'm not Catholic or a baseball fan. No worries, I can still appreciate a swing and a miss.

There is Saban,

We need to be going after #3, #4, or #5 best coachs in all of college football. We cannot afford again to be guessing at the next HC, we need a solid resume if you or I want to see another NU NC in our lifetime.
