Marques Stepp

So are we still of the theory that the reason he only ran for 500 yards in three seasons at USC is because their coaches like to sit high quality backs because the coaches are mean and stupid?
Or maybe as I tried pointing out over and over that a guy who missed more games than he played over a six year period has a serious flaw.
I'm tired of hearing about these supposed all world backs and recievers from the jc/portal. They haven't amounted to jack squat.
We really need to focus on organic growth.

Marvin and Ervin were the only scholarship RB's practicing. Both are put together well, and with the injury history of a couple of guys, these two are going to have a say in who starts and who is the primary backup in September. Johnson is not out for the spring and knows the offense. Perhaps he ends up a 3rd down specialist, as he is not big enough to carry 20 times a game.
Manning not practicing but running around the practice field with a ball in his hand and not limping continues from last fall. Is he even eligible to practice?

I have been looking for several players and have not heard of them mentioned or seen in photos of practice.

#3 WR Jamie Nance
#10 WR Demariyon Houston
#22 OLB/ILB Eteva Mauga-Clements
#55 DE Chris Walker (commonly seen in the weight room)
#77 OL Michael Lynn

Once spring ends the Transfer Portal will light up again, and anybody not in the 2 deep may be among those in the portal soon.

We should have schollies for a number of transfers who came as walkons, and other walkons, like Ezra Miller, Oliver Martin, Levi Falck, Conner Culp, Nourredin Noulli, and Wyatt Liewer

Here is proof of life of Houston

Look at the carries by USC backs, no theories ,nobody got many carries, period.

USCs leading rusher had 9more carries than Stepp did

cfbstats.com - 2020 USC Trojans Rushing

In the shortened season, the leading rusher had 54 carries ,Stepp had 45.
He essentially was their second leading ball carrier as per touches per game.

I posted those stats before, some people just have a narrative and they will not actually look to see whats going on. the leading rusher at usc had 238 yards for the season ..not a game the season. they do not run the ball they look like a regular pac 12 team. they look like a MR team.
has the guy been hurt , yep. is he hurt , yep. did USC actually run the ball , nope.

Mills had one and a half times the carries as their leading rusher per game.
Luke averaged almost as many as well.

Now,he didnt know he had this problem, the Drs caught it, it led to some of his problems previously, its being fixed.
He wanted to go somewhere where they run the ball more, thats here even before if they actually do run it more, which may be twice as much as USC per game, or more.

Northwood. Stepp is missing spring practice and I'll lay bets on him missing some or most of the fall. He missed the spring and fall practices last year at USC. He literally hasn't practiced outside of game weeks for two years. And he's missed some of that. Your chronic counting on him and making excuses is fruitless. IF he turns out to be a contributor, I am not talking big star but just a help, it will be a big bonus. Anything beyond that is rainbows and unicorns. That's why he was in the portal.

We need people who #$#$ play, not hobble around perpetually. We need guys who want to be on the field worse than anything, not have a potpourri of personal issues. Maybe this is all over, doesn't matter, I am sure we can find some tough birds who want to hit and score touchdowns. All the athletic promise in the world doesn't matter.

I'm not even counting on him, first of all.
As for him being in the portal, explain the USC coaching staff in shock at his leaving?
Explain how much they wanted his talents?

Now, if youve read about him, you too would have come across such statements by the USC staff, and is why I'm having a hard time getting to where youre at.

Now, yes, we need head knockers on this team, and SF has said he will be ready by summer.
If you have a link or two showing he wasnt in winter workouts, I would like to see them.

I see no reason to panic. Looks pretty standard to me. If a player has an injury, you repair it and allow him to rest. You never push a player who is not totally healed to participate, especially in the spring sessions. The smart thing to do is leave them out until you are sure the injury is completely healed. Many injuries are not that obvious. All players have little nagging injuries. It is usually a strain or a pull that will eventually go away. Players play with these all the time. However, sometimes they don't go away. It is not because the player was hiding it. It is because it was more severe than he wanted to admit or it got worse. No one wants to go under the knife. So most players will try to work through an injury. The good thing is people at this age heal fast and we have several months before we play. Smart players do things like work on their upper body while being down with a foot injury. Often they come back a better player.

Beyond that, if your team's future lies in the hands of one player, your coaches have failed miserably. In football it is always next man up.

Plus if we have to have a RB out for spring ball, I suppose Stepp isn't the worse one. True, he doesn't know our system, but he is the most seasoned of all backs so that helps. If he keeps his head in the game and picks up the lingo, a good fall season could keep him on pace to be a contributor fairly early on.

I think Stepp could be a difference maker. I think Stille and a couple of the other injured players are as well. I watched Ben play injured half of last season and still be a force. It is not hard to realize that an injury free Stille will make DCs sweat. The point being, I want the coaches to make sure these guys are ready for the season even if it means holding them out for the spring.

has the guy been hurt , yep. is he hurt , yep. did USC actually run the ball , nope.

My narrative is reality and past performance.

1. USC coaches purposely leave weapons to waste.
2. USC rarely runs the ball.

Maybe they don't run it because their running game is ineffective.
For a guy who plays on a team that hardly ever runs he sure gets hurt a lot. And yet he's mentioned as a workhorse. If he does what many of you seem to expect it will be a complete outlier from the whole of his career.
The fact that we've been discussing this and the guy shows up injured before he even started practice pretty much confirms everything Ive been saying.
I hope he defies his career and can play but he shouldn't be plan A because the potential shame is putting him out front and neglecting time for others and then having it all fall through. If that's what happens it's nothing but foolishness. With his history investing much on this is a pipe dream.

I would say foolishness would be somebody sitting at a keyboard trying to put words in coaches mouths as I have not got any news of HCSF saying marques is the starter, matter of fact Held hasn't said it either . maybe you can give me some links where that happened . then I can get my panties bunched up 2.

Ok look I have seen several of our backs in practice when we were there but I'm hearing too there is some "stuff" going on that the leadership group is handling. I purposely asked if it was a hurt ego type thing holding a couple guys from even showing up for practice and I could get no further info other than it was being handled by the Leadership Group
So take that for what it's worth.
It could be several things really, classes, grades, etc. So I'm not getting too worked up over it yet.
Not till I know more facts.

DOC HOLIDAY.

Everybody knows that very few STARTERS are named coming out or into spring Ball in fact this Staff has shown that in keeping true to their words most positions are open till fall during SCRIMMAGES before the season begins and they grade out players based on their performance and other things.
This always sits fairly good with the players competing for spots because they know up front what the starting job for their particular position takes and it helps take the steam off the pot if a guy doesn't get the starting job he has no one to blame but himself.
This worked great under Coach Coach Osborne and Solich and still works good today.
