Someone let me know if I am out of line, missing something, or just not educated enough to realize he is doing what he is supposed to be doing - why is Dedrick Young one of the the starting ILB? Is this basically a lack of depth issue (no one else to play)? Not that he is the only person on defense missing tackles or what would seem to be taking bad angles on the ball carrier - just seems like he stands out.

With Honas hurt, a walkon, good one, not perfect in Weinmaster, and Miller learning, yea, our depth and fit and experience is currently lacking.

We simply don't have the depth we need at LB - Young would be OK if we had better play up front - he is serviceable...we need better given what is around him.

There's just no one to take his place. The lack of serviceable depth at LB is staggering.

Long story short, the unit has little talent and Honas is injured. It is a unit in need of a total overhaul besides about 3 players.

I suspect we see a couple of JUCO recruits on defense. I know they are looking at an OLB that has good speed and a safety. We already have a JUCO DT.

We don't have speed off the edge and until we get that the defense is going to struggle.

Just cannot have a good defense without lineman that the other team has to double team. Huskers aren't even close to that right now.

I was looking for something to disagree with in the above thread for discussion sake. I just can’t find anything.

I see the twins playing and when you see them walking around you see too much fat on them. It has slowed them down. When they were younger they had more athletic ability but were also undersized. Freedom has never had any speed and has never been that good. We just have to cycle through these guys and bring in better athletes on the DL and build them up.

We graduate Freedom, Peyton and Mick.

Daniels and Stille will be good players. Otherwise we just have to develop the young guys and the ones that we sign in this class and build them up.

I think we are slightly better at DL than linebacker. That unit was managed and recruited incompetently by the previous linebacker coach.

I'm ok with developing walkons into good offensive lineman since the state has a long history of sending walkin in-state kids to the NFL, but that is not the way to manage a DL. You gotta recruit the scholarship players on the DL.

7 Mohamed Barry ILB 6-1 230 Jr. Grayson, Ga. (Grayson)
3 Will Honas ILB 6-1 235 Jr. Wichita, Kan. (Butler CC) (Bishop Carroll)
40 Grant Jordan ILB 6-2 205 So. Omaha, Neb. (Westside)
36 Spencer Jordan ILB 6-2 210 So. Omaha, Neb. (Westside)
57 Jacob Weinmaster ILB 6-0 225 Jr. Loveland, Colo. (Loveland)
5 Dedrick Young II ILB 6-1 245 Sr. Peoria, Ariz. (Centennial)
50 Jake Archer LB 6-0 210 Fr. Omaha, Neb. (Skutt Catholic)
51 Anthony Banderas LB 6-1 225 Fr. Lincoln, Neb. (Southwest)
58 Chris Cassidy LB 6-1 225 Fr. Lincoln, Neb. (Pius X)
Time for a couple these to step up

I think LB was a strength, with Honas.
It shows how much the defense has improved from last year.
Our D line is ok because of our depth.
Just think how we are getting some play out of guys weve written off from the D line.
Now, just think going forwards, most of our starters, with their abilities will be backups, same for LBs except one or two.
You recruit D ends for a 4-3, it isnt a great fit for a 3-4, not that it doesnt work,or those guys arent decent players, but they are playing out of position, and is why seeing one of those written off guys even contributing.
Not knocking anyone, its just tough with all the changes.

For our defense we want long, athletic players that can be developed. We don't want a 6'3 DE. We want someone around 6'6'' or 6'7'' and develop them.

For OT we want guys who are athletic and not so much dictated on height.

All you have to do is go back to Chip Kelly at Oregon and how he recruited positions and Frost wants to do the same in many areas except some changes in some areas - like OL.
