Jason Peter and Jay Foreman now on "staff"

I like the move of bringing in JP and JF, but I'm not sure what your point is for the part I bolded. This is a message board. All of us, yourself included, have opinions about things that are done, and what is going on. I'm not sure why these opinions get under your skin to the point where you feel a snarky a$$ed comment is required, telling everyone in essence that they aren't qualified to have an opinion.....
It was more to Doc Fumbles comments about not having the past players come in. I was just saying it would be better to have past players come in to help the team than to have some of the folks on here who think they are master evaluaters go help them. You are correct we all have an opinion, but I think the players who have went pro have a better understanding what can be done to help the players and the program than most anyone on here.

Agreed. I probably jumped on you too much for your earlier post. My apologies, because I can't argue with your point. I hope JP and JF can make a difference with the players and help get them in the right mindset.

The only negative I see from this move is that both of these players are defensive players. The defense has been heading in the right direction. This may help solidify that. However, the side of the ball that needs the most attention is the offense.

I'd like to see one of the guys that won Lifter of the Year come into the weight room and get involved. Some of those skinny guys who became a wrecking crew all by themselves.

I think JF knows what an offense wants to do. and many things cross over, but yea, I get it, but hopefully things turn around, and not a lot will be needed

I like both these guys and hope they can have an impact.
I guess I dont get the legality of this. It seems to me that Saban really invented this Johnny Cochran type program of stretching the rules to allow these huge staffs. Of course the NCAA wouldn't touch him so now it's no hold barred.
Wouldn't this have been blatant violation a few years back?
What is it they can or cannot do?

I appreciate this move Doc, but...why not get them here under MR, coulda saved us 6 years of heartache.

Edit: Caveat - OK, I'll give you the MR days, cuz they weren't "Husker Way" coaches, but Scott? He shoulda acted on this day one when he saw a soft D. :)

Main reason as you eluded to was he wasn't Nebraska and didn't get what it takes to get Nebraska hitting on all 8 cylinders.

I made no big secret of the fact Mike Riley was more concerned with "His" West Coast Star power than what Coach Devaney & Coach Osborne worked so hard to build here.
The formula for making this program run like clockwork is a very specific one, true it can be updated and tweaked to fit the times but the baseline formula stays the same.

Sure Mike Riley was polite to us former players and did try to connect with some of us but it was just mostly for show, we always got the impression we were not near as important to the teams success as Keyshawn Johnson and his Son were. He had his foot in that door on the left coast but there was just to much stuff he neglected or didn't understand about this part of the country.

In the end we knew that it was a desperate move on Eichorst's part to hire a Coach that would be his puppet and do exactly what Eichorst told him to do and it back fired. In the end it boiled down to just another failed example of a Athletic Director that thought he knew more about how to make Nebraska into something he wanted than Nebraska does.

So while he talked a good game he fell far short of putting any Iron In his words and it cost them both Riley and Eichorst their jobs.

DOC HOLIDAY.

Eichorst was the worst and he did as much to destroy Nebraska culture as did Pedyshine.

Very true Doc, very statesman like, but too kind

Surely they know more than Peter or Foreman.
I have no doubt that Peter and Foreman both know a hell of a lot. But the thing is, they are not allowed to be volunteer football COACHES. They are strictly there to be unpaid, staff volunteers. If the guys can't coach, what exactly are they there to do? I thought the program already had weight training staff who -- I'm guessing -- are pretty darn particular when it comes to outsiders telling their guys how they should be lifting.

So essentially this is about adding a little 'rah, rah.' Now there's nothing wrong with that, especially somebody like Foreman. But while I was a fan of Peter as a player -- he was a hell of a good D lineman and one of my favorites -- but as a role-model/influencer? um, not so much.

Can some subtle coaching go on in these situations? I suppose. But as a HC, if you use former players in this way, you'd better know that the NCAA is going to be looking awfully closely to make sure you aren't 'bending the rules' on the size of your coaching staff.

I view this announcement as nothing more than "throwing some red meat to the fans." Certainly no biggie, one way or the other.

I had a thought.....well, OK.....it wasn't originally my thought, but since the originator doesn't post online, I can take credit.....or blame. That thought was this move might be an example of what Scott needs to do to change culture.

When I heard Scott talk about culture change, for me it meant work ethic, motivation, team first etc. but I might have missed the point...….at least partially. It just might mean that players have a hard time fitting in with two, maybe three, worlds. It might mean that Scott is trying to encourage an environment where the team provides many of the social, and emotional, needs players at Nebraska face. Scott made mention that he loves players who live football, but if a player is going to focus on studies, social relationships, and still focus on football, the program needs to provide a broader support system for the players so many of these needs aren't filled by disruptive outside influences.

I think he wanted team leaders to provide this. I don't think it worked as well as he would have liked. Team leaders are still peers, and peers no matter how vocal, how good of players, are still, well, peers. With this diverse group from all over the nation, with differing cultures, and home lives, it's just a hard sell for many players.

It would be nice if the coaches could spend more time with the players, but the ncaa, and honestly the size of this program, have made that impossible. Step in volunteers. They just might fill a void that others can't reach. Get the right volunteers. Monitor the interaction closely...…..and this just might work.

Bingo

Which is why people tend to forget when they want to get "creative."

Nebraska FB had it's "flashy" opportunities when they wanted; however, Nebraska FB for most of our lives was about kicking your ass, and you were going to take it, AND like it.

We are fairly simple when it comes to Husker FB, which means for the bottom line.. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."

As a proud member of the newly formed Lettermens Assoc. I will simply say these few words.

NOT ON OUR WATCH...AS LONG AS WE HAVE LIFE AND MAYBE EVEN SOME AFTER WHO KNOWS....WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO SEE TO IT THAT WE NEVER FALL DOWN AGAIN.

DOC HOLIDAY.
Its this attitude that got us anywhere Doc, much appreciated

Cool.

But I'd feel a whole lot better if those words were coming from our current players and coaches.

Don't get me wrong; our proud tradition SHOULD mean something, dammit. But a championship drought going on an embarrassing 21 years and 4 straight losing seasons is saying otherwise. Here's to hoping it all changes soon.

Hard to say 'I'm going to kick butt on this world class race' when youre just learning to walk again, but basically agree here doc
