I'm not sure what Trev needs to explain. This is a coach who admires physical but disciplined football. I'm not sure how a four-year Joe Paterno walk-on LINEBACKER is wrong for us. He has a well-deserved reputation for developing players and has serious experience on both sides of the ball -- including being a position coach on the offensive and defensive lines.
He was the head coach AT BAYLOR. Have you ever been to Waco, Texas?
Yeah and he left after 3 years. He couldn't wait to get out of there.I'm not sure what Trev needs to explain. This is a coach who admires physical but disciplined football. I suspect the monster contract Carolina offered him to coach in the NFL might have played a tiny role in Matt's decision to leave town.Yeah and he left after 3 years. He couldn't wait to get out of there.
But thats the deal. Its all "what ifs". Nothing is a sure thing. What if he gets the right o-line coach? What if he gets Mickey to stay? What if these players leave? What if the NFL comes calling again next year? What if the PSU job opens up?I'm guessing the naysayers have so little evidence this is a bad hire they have to resort to criticizing his attire and inability to relate to players from Western Nebraska. Credit to 84 for bringing up a valid concern...will Rhule be here for the long haul? But TA cannot base his decision on what he thinks is best for the program on "what ifs."
I understand it is an 8 year deal. If he moves on early maybe the U can recoup some of the Mike Riley and Scott Frost buyout costs.
We aren't/weren't as bad as Temple or Baylor b4 he took over and he turned both of them around quickly. We have more resources and depending on how many player's depart he should have an easier time turning this thing around. If not he can't turn this around in 3 or 4 years then he's not thr rebuilder everyone is making hI got news for you, I doubt this all gets turned around in just three years time.
Eeeh maybe. However Waco...yeah I'd have left even if it wasn't the money.I suspect the monster contract Carolina offered him to coach in the NFL might have played a tiny role in Matt's decision to leave town.![]()
His first day he should make the OL run every step in Memorial Stadium....twice.1. I spent a night in Waco once, was the worst three weeks of my life.
2. I am really concerned about an 8 year contract, especially if it appears this sh** is going sideways by year 3. Not sure what the per year rate is, but I know Rhule is most likely to be grossly overpaid.
3. All that being said, since I had no input in the hiring process, all I can do (all any of us can do) is support the new head coach and watch it unfold.
4a. I know there is much lamenting about our "lack of talent" and some people thinking we're light years away from Ohio State or Alabama's level, Michigan's whooping of Ohio State earlier today should greatly ease those concerns. Michigan whooped Ohio State where it truly matters, up front on both sides of the ball.
4b. How does this apply to Nebraska? Simple. Upgrading the O and D lines alone can make us championship contenders. Talent wise, we're not that far off. Nebraska's biggest problem during the last 14 or so years was we had talent that played far below their individual and collective abilities. If Rhule can come in, and flip the mentality off our O and D line, we have good enough skill players.

The coldest winter I even spent was a summer in San Francisco (Mark Twain)
Actually Michigan could not run the ball at all for most of 3 quarters - they used big passing plays to get the lead. Busted one big run for a TD and tOSU sort of lost their edge - belief they could win. A late long run padded the running stats even more for Mich - but this was not an ass kicking in the trenches from start to finish. It was Day getting out coached badly.
I long for the day our opponents are out coached badly. It's been 25 years. Maybe Rhule can change our fortunes. The coldest winter I even spent was a summer in San Francisco (Mark Twain)

I'll agree on style of play being a factor in Michigan's favor - but they also made play after play on defense as well in 2nd half - that was coaching adjustments on D. OSU chose to stack the box to stop the run - and Michigan coaches figured out the match ups/plays to get big plays. To me - the W was about in game coaching and execution. Not either team whipping the other in the trenches. Michigan's QB was the MOST important factor in the win IMHO - he played his ass off.Yeah and while that is true you're conveniently omittimg a couple key factors:
1. Ohio State is by an measure an elite team with elite talent and Michigan's physical approach in quarters 1-3 kept them in the game.
2. At no point have I ever advocated going 80+% run because I do recognize the need and value to being able to throw the ball. However, being able to throw the ball on your terms, picking when and where you throw is far different than the defense forcing you to throw.
3. It was Michigan's relentless pounding running game in quarters 1-3 which allowed their running game to explode in the 4th Q.
4. Against non-elite teams (like Nebraska, for example) Michigan's OL was blowing our front seven 5 yards off the line scrimmage.
Whether you run the opposition into the ground from the start or break them with it in the 4th Q matters naught. The point is, running the ball is why Michigan is 12-0.
We used to do that to people, remember?
