Is it too late for Trev to change his mind?

Serious question

I have been a SF supporter from the jump— thought he would be our coach for the next 30 years and lead us back to national prominence

Through the first three years, I thought we were mostly unlucky— some coaching errors but felt like Frost had recruited well enough that the worm would turn and we would get where we wanted to be- just a few years behind schedule

This year I told myself we really were the unluckiest team in the country. Every week, so close with no payoff

But I’ve really had a crisis of faith after the Iowa game— that we weren’t tough minded enough to overcome a lousy blocked punt is inexcusable— we had enough talent to win at least 7-8 games this year— maybe more— but the only teams we beat all year we completely overmatched

All that said, SFs guys never quit on him-/ they played hard every game- they just don’t know how to win

So my question is, should TA reconsider his decision and move on before we sign a bunch off new assistants ,to at least two year contracts, or cut bait and move on.

I don't think TA will reconsider his decision. I believe he's a man of his word and that's that. Also, they renegotiated. I would assume that paperwork and signatures were involved so that would be a bit of a sticky widget.

On a personal level, I think it would be, for the program, a wise move. If this next year puts us 2 years further back (supposing it's a colassal failure), that's not a great thing.

But, it also would send a negative message to prospective coaches, that our AD would not honor a deal previously made.

So, for many reasons, I believe the die is cast and all we can do is wait and see how the 2022 season plays out.

Until we get players in here like we had back in the day we won't win like we did back in the day.

That would be the dumbest decision ever. What message would that send to future coaches. We announce you are coming back next year, you play the 15th and 16th ranked teams to one score games and then come back and say nope you are outta here. Not a good show of faith. I think most coaches would question the word of any AD that would do that. Also think it makes Trev look pretty stupid.

That's a tough one RSR. We'll all know the answer this time next year. Right now I think TA did the right thing. Give Frost one more year but we must see substantial improvement. My reason is simple and you mentioned it. This team never quit on Frost. I honestly thought after the Purdue game this team would thow in the towel and get boat raced the last 3 games. They are so mentally fragile I expected them to quit. They didn't. It's maddening for the fanbase but I have seen the Huskers quit in games under the 3 coaches prior to Frost. That gives me some hope. Frost doesn't have to reinvent the wheel here to succeed. He has to take a long look in the mirror and admit mistakes and correct them.

There will probably be a lot of I-told-you-so's if things go south again next season but I'll stand by my opinion that keeping him was the right thing to do.

I understand why Trev renegotiated Frost's contract. It was an honorable thing (the loyalty to a Husker and brother) and financially wise for the Ath Dept.

I'm thinking that not much is going to change in the overall scheme of things. The coaches hired will reflect SF's coaching style so it is likely a fait accompli. If that happens, I'll take no joy in it and I can't see any reason for a bunch of I told you so's. It will still leave us in a horrible pickle.

I haven't been all that impressed with Alberts. Bringing us woke basketball may get you some high fives at UNL but it isn't being well recieved. If he tries that on the football field there will be a mass migration of fans out of the stadium.

Thanks

I’ll step back from the ledge now

There should have been stipulations involving how the season finished out. Blowing that lead yesterday was the last straw for me. And now there will likely be a mass exodus of experienced players out of Lincoln and maybe another coach or two.

2022 will be more of the same!

Makes you wonder why TA was in such a hurry to rewrite SFs contract— might have made more sense to see how the season played out

I think a lot of folks were surprised this didn't happen after the season but I don't think they wanted to pay out $20 mill. Which is why IMO they did what they did when they did it expecting a 3-9 result.

This. 100%

I admittedly couldn't bring myself to watch COVID football with no fans, so I didn't. However, I've never seen a Frost coached team quit or give up... in a game or on a season. I have seen that under the previous three coaches. The losses, especially in 2021, are maddening. Yet, the conduct and play on the field are things I wanted to see so much under previous head coaches. I'm not happy with the 2021 win-loss record, not at all. I am happy to see a team that appears to care. As Frost alluded to in his post-Iowa press conference... one big win rolls into two... then three... once they believe, they will believe.

The team is moving in the right direction. Others with far more insider knowledge than I have said that the Riley teams were soft in many ways. The Frost competitiveness is taking root. Don't pull the plants up before they yield their harvest, or you will have to start all over.

I’ve been a Frost supporter and have stood up for him on here multiple times, but I asked myself the same question after Iowa. From a business standpoint, TA made the right move and going back on his word would make any coach hesitant whether it’s a position or head guy. TA will move on from him if and when he goes 2-4 next year.

The way the contract is structured the reduced buyout doesn't take effect until October fwiw. (one year from signing date)
