Huskers Rhule

I agree, Hunch. "Raises eyebrows?" Such hogwash! Didn't this Oliver Vandervoot write some other click-bait article awhile back that we grouched about?

For the record, the quote was: "I am just entrusted (at Nebraska) for a short amount of time,” Rhule said. “I’m trying to do the best job that I can. I know that someone will be here after me, and I want them to say, ‘Matt left it in a good place.’”

Yeah, Ollie, Coach announced to Husker Nation during a press conference on his coaching clinic that he's ONLY here at Nebraska for a short time.
OR
Maybe, just maybe, Matt was saying our life on Earth is short so all we can do is do the best job we can during that time.

Hmmmm....which one could it have been?

They said the same about Coach Flintstone when he took over the Bedrock Dinosaurs.

First off, I am well-aware that Coach Rhule hasn't turned around Nebraska's fortunes (yet.) But I continue to be impressed by the way he commands a press conference and 'pulls back the covers' to educate us fans. Typically, a mid-Spring ball coaching report by a HC is going to be pretty mundane stuff. That's just the way coaching reports go (i.e. "the boys moved around well.") No big deal, right?

But with Coach Rhule, I personally find every one of his pressers to be a satisfying meal for an information-hungry fanatic like me. Yesterday's was no exception. I keep telling myself before watching the lastest that, 'Oh, this one is probably gonna be pretty hum-drum.' But then he pops in with another thought-provoking gem.

Yesterday, when asked about the highlights of Spring Ball, he said there have been a lot of big plays. But added that as a coach, he is much more concerned with limiting the lowlights. He said those were the reason why we only won five games last year.

Unfortunately over the last few years we have had far more lowlights than highlights. To me he is saying that if we quit beating ourselves, we will be a much better team. I agree with that. Bad habits, bad attitudes, bad techniques and stupid play needs to be eliminated.

Yup and I am glad it's a priority.

This right here.

We've all been saying it for years, stop beating yourselves. Heck last year 1 less mistake in 5 of our 7 losses and we are 10-2. Man just saying that, let that sink in. Basically that's how it's been for the last several years. 1 less mistake every game and we don't have losing seasons.

I've heard it said the floor is being raised.

The Ticket scored a big one.

All in all, it was a good interview with Coach hitting on a few topics we hadn't heard him talk much about before. My only beef is that the station's owner, Drew Pearson, (the guy on the far right), overly monopolized (IMO) the first part of the interview.

Dear Drew: We've tuned in to hear Coach Rhule talk, not you.

ESPN Football Recruiting - Player Rankings - ESPN

You can look at different years on this, and the change on in state recruiting is night and day

I think Wyoming was the most pissed when frost was let go

You know what baffled me? How a former Nebraska high school football player, like Frost, could have such an utter disdain for recruits from the state of Nebraska? Like????

The hirings of both Bo Pelini and Scott Frost were harolded across Husker Nation as...(cue trumpet fanfare)... The Return of The Nebraska Way! In hindsight, neither one could have been further from the truth.

The irony of hiring Matt Rhule is that...gasp!... this outsider* is the one responsible for taking the program back to its Devaney-Osborne roots. Yes, as he likes to remind all of us, we're a 5-7 ballclub until we're not. But if you're looking, you'll notice all the signs are there.

Note to self: Rhule's commitment to all of the various aspects of the program that used to comprise The Nebraska Way that us, Old Timers fondly remember would make for a good discussion thread this summer.

* I recall one my Husker friends grousing when Rhule was first announced that we're "hiring another outsider from the NFL" who doesn't get us. My response was that once-upon-a-time, Bob Devaney was an outsider too. Then he became one of us. (I didn't know at the time that OOU would become a Rhule thing.)

It's draft day. Watch how many players from small schools to the north of us have players drafted-probably before any Huskers. Pay particular attention to SDSU and Wyoming. These are kids we should have gotten here that will be playing on Sundays.
Lost opportunities.
