How can this be?

If Logan Smothers had to miss a play against Michigan, the number 4 quarterback would have been walk-on Jarrett Synek. Where are the recruited QBs? What about Masker? This is truly representative of the failures of those responsible for player development the past few years. My goodness. I mean, we all can see the issues with the o-line, etc., but we’ve had QB whisperers, right? How can this be?

9 is correct. But Thompson did not travel and I think Torres is still healing from his knee injury and unavailable, but I could be wrong on that. Masker was at the game so surprised he didnt go in. I doubt we took all 7 QBs on the road since we can only take a certain number of players. 70 I think is what we are allowed but I could be wrong there too. I would also doubt Pauly or Hausman made the trip. So we know that Purdy, Smothers, Masker, and Synek went. That leaves Haarberg as the only other that may have went. I havent seen Haarberg all year even on the sidelines so not sure he went either.

Haarberg suited up for at least one home game - but yeah I don't think he's close to being 3rd QB right now.

Haarberg was a stretch/project at the get go. Most of those types do not work out by definition. Maybe he's one of those guys who peak pretty late.

We will never know if they don’t play. Same with Torres, Masker, Pauley, etc.

Chubba is having ankle surgery. If Casey can’t go this week (and we all hope he can) if will be Smothers with Synek as his backup. A fellow who not yet taken a snap in college. I don’t care how many QBs are on the roster. You just have to have 4 who can play. And we don’t. And I don’t get it.

Oh, I think you do.
It's a lot easier to see in hindsight. Frosts first lust was Martinez. Why, I don't know because he did not have the skills to run his offense. Then, for the next four recruiting seasons failed to sign even one qb that would or even should be on the field.
His intuition for qb's was off the charts awful.

2018: one qb who was injury prone in hs-off the charts stupid(same chart as before). Chased the only other viable qb on the team off.

2019-None. Luke M. was listed by the recruiting services as an athlete. Frost, perhaps the only being in our galaxy to do, so saw a qb. Good grief.

2020-one, Jordan Smothers. Despite one injury prone qb and another obviously by now not a realistic option Frost saw fit to go for the third time with the athlete with no skills to run his offense.

2021-Come on down, Heinrich Haarburgh. Pure project player. Which is ok if you are healthy at qb but at this point to take a Longshot was mind numbing. And once again, Frost fulfilled his annual qb quota of one despite the extremely sketchy candidates.
2022- Richard Torres.
Reportedly skilled but injury prone.
All systems normal.

I am sorry, but this whole episode screams laziness and a screw it attitude.
Five years, five #$$## recruits for the most important job on the team.
Apparently at some point a light bulb went off (probably when AM left) that we're in deep stuff and the athletic department had to bid for a decent qb in the portal and another that they obviously knew little about.
I have no certainty but wonder if someone didn't have to step in and force this to happen. It would stand to reason.
There is little mystery why we are where we are.
So, yes we do know know why we are here.

Had to look this up.
Overall national recruiting rank. In parentheses the number of other P5 offers.
Torres #966(1)
Haarburg. #600(3)
Smothers #313(1)
MCcaffery #257(but not a qb)
Martinez #139

Notice a pattern? And what would you expect of this group? Maybe a decent player and a possible diamond in the rough? That would be about as good as it got.
We invested 20 bucks a year into an IRA and now wonder why we are 77 years old living paycheck to paycheck.

Martinez had at least one more P5 offer.

In addition to former HC Frost, I reserve some blame for Coach Verduzco, our former QB whisperer. But my chief gripe remains - there’s no development. These guys must have some innate abilities to read a defense and run and throw, but Smothers’ backup is, as I keep repeating, a walk-on with zero collegiate experience. I like Smothers, I see talent there, but he’s been here like 3 or 4 years and still really isn’t ready. He played well against Iowa last year - until the fumble (but contractually all NU QBs had to have a fatal turnover each game last season) - but he seems to have digressed. So i guess I should be blaming Whipple, too. I find it all infuriating.
