How can this be?

Martinez had at least one more P5 offer.
I didn't include his. He was a legit qb recruit, he was just not a fit for Frost's offense. You know Oklahoma won a national championship after a slow start. They were struggling until their starting but Ill fitting qb got injured and true frosh Jamelle Holieway took over. That qb was not going to win his job back so he transferred out. That was Troy Aikman. He was super talented but not complimentary towards Switzer's offense.
Frost wanted a MacKenzie Milton clone. AM was not even close.

I guess my point was qb recruiting post AM. Pretty much non existent, bush league, inexcusable nonsense.

Chubba is having ankle surgery. If Casey can’t go this week (and we all hope he can) if will be Smothers with Synek as his backup. A fellow who not yet taken a snap in college. I don’t care how many QBs are on the roster. You just have to have 4 who can play. And we don’t. And I don’t get it.

Synek played the last 3 downs of the Michigan game

Liberty is starting their third-string quarterback for most of the season. I believe the first two went down by game 3.

In addition to former HC Frost, I reserve some blame for Coach Verduzco, our former QB whisperer. But my chief gripe remains - there’s no development. These guys must have some innate abilities to read a defense and run and throw, but Smothers’ backup is, as I keep repeating, a walk-on with zero collegiate experience. I like Smothers, I see talent there, but he’s been here like 3 or 4 years and still really isn’t ready. He played well against Iowa last year - until the fumble (but contractually all NU QBs had to have a fatal turnover each game last season) - but he seems to have digressed. So i guess I should be blaming Whipple, too. I find it all infuriating.
It is frustrating not knowing the level of incompetence till competence is needed...

From the OWH today:
“Synek worked with the 2s Tuesday, Joseph said, and NU might look next to true freshman Richard Torres if necessary. Scholarship QB Heinrich Haarberg is evidently not a viable option — “No, he’s not hurt,” Joseph said. Fifth-year walk-on Matt Masker and Synek traveled to Ann Arbor last weekend along with Purdy and Smothers.”

sigh.

As we all witnessed, SF was laser-focused on AM running his offense for four seasons. The rock-solid evidence he didn't want to be bothered with competition is that Frost said 'Thanks, but no thanks' to Joe Burrows.

While I'm sure it was a big disappointment to Joe at the time, Frost's snub (following Bo's snub when he was in HS) turned out to be The Best Thing that could've ever happened to the kid.

These 'Can you believe it?' snubs are excellent examples of how a once-proud program turns into a clusterf**k.
