Hate to say it, but I have given up any hope for Scott Frost

There's no such thing anymore/right now that is "Nebraska Football" - we've been irrelevant for over a decade. The style we had when we one big.... almost 30 years ago. The players weren't even born yet.

Whatever style we want - find the players that can make it work and win games.
You can deny it if you want. ASK any one and it was running the option or I formation. That is our culture and our identity. Of course when you hire imposters, then you dont get those ideals but that does not change who we are.

I'm not denying it. I agree... it WAS... when we used it successfully... 25 years ago.

We all remember it. Love it. But it hasn't been our identity for almost two decades. We currently have no true identity.
Might it work again? Maybe. Defenses are terrifically faster and less regimented now. Teams drifting away from option ball back then wasn't by accident.

But I don't care. If it works tomorrow, great. If we run 90%, great. If we pass every down, great. As long as we dominate and win 10+ with regularity,

Doc,

I know that when Frost came on board he asked for the help from the former players who greeted him. I understand that in many ways that is simply saying the expected thing from a former player/new head coach, but my question is, has this happened? I don't mean in the sense of day to day contact with the team and coaches. Everyone on the staff is busy with what they need to do and must do. And former players have career and family responsibilities. But does Frost call on former players from the successful past to address a team meeting once in awhile to verbalize what it really meant to be a part of that past success.

I also recently watched an interview with a social psychologist who indicated that the differences in young people's attitudes and experiences between the 1980's and 1990's are so much different than today that it is not going to be successful trying to appeal to the past. So maybe rah rah appeals from former players isn't what is needed from them. But if so, what can former players contribute to a program that they love?

Any insight you can provide without violating anyones confidence would be interesting.

Chris, you cannot pass every day and win. Ask Mike Leach how well that has worked out for him. Since he invented the current air raid offense, he has failed at WSU and now Mississippii St. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa not so much. Guess what conference we are in. When in Rome applies here. Guess we can just disagree!

With personnel good enough to pass every play, it can work in the B1G. Without that personnel, it won’t work. Our coaches need to build around what’s in place talent wise, and recruit to get the players they need to run their system at the run/pass balance they like.

When we start producing on O and it translates to wins, any fan who scoffs at the successful offense because they “just don’t like it” will have to be disappointed and/or not let the door hit them in the Baby Poop hole as they leave.

If you have personnel good enough for pass protection, then you have personnel good enough to block for a running game. Air raids have not won a single conference championship in a P 5 conference. Look at what Day has done at OSU, its all down hill baby.

Run blocking and pass blocking are different skills. Some lineman can do both well, but many are much better at just one.

And the air raid (which Whipple isn’t bringing here) not having won a P5 championship in the past doesn’t mean it can’t win. It’s usually been used at second tier programs like WSU, MSU, and Hawaii who don’t have any defense.

You can kill someone with a rubber chicken... IF YOU WORK REALLY HARD AT IT.

Same with Nebraska FB.. IF you want to make it work, and invest everything needed to make it happen...IT USUALLY does.

For exame: TO would run th 3rd/4th and any 5th stringers through the same routines that the 1st and 2nds got.

We USED to have the weight program of legend.

We used to be OL U.

THAT'S what we need..... the desire and investment to make whatever we are going to be happen.

And which of those teams have won a conference championship? Wisconsin has what 1? You have to be able to run and pass the ball depending on the situation. You cant run every down and win either. If Iowa would have had any passing game at all this year they may be in the playoffs.

Mississippi State provides Mike Leach with impressive assistant salary pool, incentives for achievements

I asked, he said it has worked out very well for him..

When did WIsky run an air raid offense? No advocating for a run only offense, only run first offense. I don't believe anyone in our division runs air raid except Purdue and when did they win a division?

I'm not advocating for a particular offense because it will be what it will be when Whipple gets here and whatever I think won't matter. But, Ohio State passed it 54 times and ran it 30 times against Nebraska.
Yes and we had our usual mistakes, and lost. We aren't exactly a powerhouse. The OSU passed for 49 times against MU who passed the ball 19 times and won. OSU ran 20times to MU s 41 Michigans run total was ginormous compared to OSU.

Again- I'm not disagreeing with you. If option ball works, great! And yeah- I was exaggerating to make my point.

I don't think any of us know if true option ball will ever work again - but a balanced attacked - and some brute force in the trenches is a must,

Yup. Agreed.

And I know we miss the JV program. That provided a reall edge for us.

I know what happened in those games. You said Ryan Day at tOSU was "all down hill baby" which they weren't and haven't been. And, this was the first year since 2011 that Michigan beat Ohio State.

I am not for running all option, I would be for all pro set mixed with some spread. LOL. And throwing the ball. What I have said and will reiterate here, I do not want to see a Qb doing all of the work on offense.

One can hope, right? He did lose two games this year, that is a bad year for OSU. Quite frankly, Im really tired of OSU and Bama, are you ?

They didnt. They run a mostly run only offense. Have never been a great passing team. But all of the teams you mentioned are mainly run first run often teams and Wisconsin is the only one that has a conference Championship, none of the others do. Running only doesnt win much either. Teams that win can do both.

The B1G is a balanced league, with a lot of close-fit games, especially in our division. The fourth quarter is more important now than ever.

We lack almost everything it takes to hold a lead in the fourth quarter. We exhibit poor kicking, and we lose the hidden yardage battles. No return game at all. No discipline at crunch time. And perhaps worst of all, no running game that consistently generates first downs and eats time off the clock.

In three of the nine losses, we were either tied or had the lead after three quarters. If we had won the fourth quarter in those three games, we'd be bowling -- with wins over Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa.

Two of those three played in the B1G championship. Just sayin'.
