Fall Camp 2025!

My Top Ten list is actually a Top 12 list. Here's a couple more reasons why I'm expecting big things this fall that deserve being mentioned:

Another Reason - Our Tight Ends: How many programs could lose a TE to the NFL and have fans expecting BETTER TE performances the following year? IMO, we've got three tight ends who you could argue could all end up in the NFL: Lindenmeyer, Haarberg, and Nelson. One of my frustrations last season was having a killer TE room yet their own position coach, our former OC, couldn't seem to figure out how to use them? What's wrong with this picture?!?!? I don't expect this issue to be the case this time around with Holgorsen.

And Another Reason - Emmitt Johnson: He doesn't fit into the elite group of RBs we've ever had, but once DN came aboard and featured EJ, the kid stepped up his game and showed fans he's capable of being VERY GOOD. With his confidence and a solid OL, Emmitt could have a breakout season. My one worry has been RB depth. Johnson is not the kind of back you can run 30 times a game in the B1G. But on that front, I was excited to hear that Isaiah Mozee has moved to RB for the season. An RB becomes another receiver in DN's offense and Mozee is a buzz-worthy, Barney-like talent. And unlike WanDale back-in-the-day, Isaiah ASKED to be moved to RB in order to get on the field this year.

GO BIG RED!
I was coming to reply that you had forgotten EJ but then you came back with this. I think EJ could be one of our elite backs. He just hasnt been given the chance. I have been saying for 2 years that he should have been the starter and been given more of a chance. I think this year we will find out just how good the young man is.

I have been thinking about some of the things Coach Rhule said at B1G Media Days:

* Supported Scott Frost
* Said the HC position at Nebraska wasn't a good job.
* Talked about the rash of knee injuries.
* Believes they can play with anyone.
* Ownership, saying I have to do better, not pointing fingers at others.

1. I understand why Coach Rhule said the positive things about Scott Frost. I do not share his sentiments, but I understand the politic nature of his answer. It just speaks to how genuine and classy Matt Rhule is. And to this point, Even in 2023 when when scumbag Deon Sanders, like the p.o.s. he is, tried to say that Coach Rhule disrespected him. We all knew it was horse droppings, but that's the way Sanders operates.

2. I looked at the support from the fans--even during the run of seven consecutive losing seasons, the huge, state of the art weight room, recovery pools and other programs, training table, locker facilities, support staff (both academic and athletic), and thought that Nebraska was one of the best jobs a HC could take--that everything was in place a coach needed to win. So to hear Coach Rhule say the HC position at Nebraska wasn't a good job and then followed it up by saying it's becoming a great job kinda hurt my pride a little bit.

3. Coach Rhule is truly something special because he is the ONLY coach who saw that our practice fields and the turf in Memorial Stadium was bad. He is the ONLY coach that looked at the rash of ACL tears and other knee injuries our players suffered and connected the dots to the bad field. Pelini, Riley, and certainly Frost never did anything like that. And insisting that large capital investments be made to fix the practice and stadium surface is absolutely huge and I think isn't talked about enough.

4. The belief that this team can play with anyone was so refreshing to hear. As Rhule said, they still have to go out and perform, but the fact that he says he like the team and where they're at: physically, mentally, and emotionally speaks volumes to the work they've put in. I appreciate that both Coach Rhule and Henry Lutovsky are both not shy about saying they have aspirations of getting to the national championship. I understand some people are saying that's too far of a stretch, we're probably a year away, etc. While I certainly understand the incremental approach, especially since that is Matt Rhule's basic philosophy, I cannot help but ask, why not this year? The players have to go out and do it, but as I see it, we finally have all the pieces to return to the elite of college football.

5. I really loved how Coach Rhule has repeatedly emphasized that you know an organization has the right culture when people say I have to do better instead of blaming others. I am continually amazed at Matt Rhule because he's the first coach (at Nebraska and anywhere else really) who has instituted this "I have to get better" culture. How many times did we hear Pelini or Frost blame the players? Never once did either of those two ever say, "I looked into the mirror, and I need to do better."

In summary, I don't know what the 2025 season has in store for the Nebraska football team. All evidence and signs point to a Nebraska resurgence, but as Coach said, they have to go out and do it.

Today fall camp starts and the season will be here before we know it. It's going to be interesting to see how this team plays. I don't think we'll really know anything substantial about this team until after the Michigan game. To my way of thinking, beating Michigan is crucial to the rest of the season. Beating Michigan, 1) it'll put that turd Desmond Howard in his place, and 2) the Huskers win that game and then they will know they can play with anyone. They'll have proof of concept so to speak. Football is a game of momentum and all the Huskers need is to get some going. As the adage goes, winning is contagious, unfortunately so is losing. So here's me hoping that all the things Coach Rhule says are fixed, are actually fixed.

:gbr:

GREAT post, Coach Leatherboots!

Hurting fans' feelings is EXACTLY why you didn't hear Coach talk about this until now.

If Rhule would've outlined his private list of 'fix 'er ups' at the beginning of his tenure, Husker fans would've responded with, "WTH? Who does this Rhule guy think he is? Everybody knows we've been SO CLOSE to turning things around for years now."

But the stark reality of our situation was different. You don't have the sad-sack record we've had every season since Riley just because of 'bad breaks in close games.' Yeah, the facilities were 'on their way' but that didn't help him at the start any more than they did Frost.

And, as you pointed out, nobody was talking about the horrible state of our turf--has everybody forgotten the rash of injuries on O we experienced in Rhule's first season? Hmmm...I wonder if the turf might have been a factor? And CEO Rhule put a special emphasis on Nebraska's injury recovery, S&G, and nutrition programs that were not anywhere close to being the way they are now.

And let's not forget the feud our then-AD had with Davison and our NIL consortium. To me, that was the real, mindboggling "WTH is going on here?" behind-the-scenes problem. It's a perfect illustration of Nebraska's twenty year trend of the ego of University suits screwing with the product on the field.

Football Coach, Matt Rhule, has something to prove this season. But CEO Rhule has dramatically changed our Husker program for the better since Frost left town.

I'll ask again: When I want to post You Tube videos here on BHF, how do I do it so you can click and watch the video here?

Because whenever I post a video from my YT page, all it shows is the link.

I used to be able to just copy the link and the video would embed. What changed?

Okay so I found out what the issue was.

Someone on this site made a change so that I can only post links to my You Tube College Football and other video game play throughs here.

Look, I get it, it's your site, and you set the rules but being honest enough to message me and tell me you made this change would have been the right way to do this.

Youtube probably is blocking 3rd party relays.

The thing I look at is the number of all conference and NFL players Nebraska produced under Riley and Frost. If that doesn't tell you there was a problem bigger than "coaching better" I don't know what will. Regardless of recruiting ratings - we swung and missed WAY, WAY too many times to put together quality teams.
The Davis brothers were NFL quality and Maleik Collins is another with a long career in the NFL. Somehow they weren't recognized while at Nebraska. Perhaps they weren't put in a position to shine.
Cam Jurgens and Cam Taylor-Britt were both 2nd round selections and having very good NFL careers. Wandale Robinson is a quality NFL receiver Frost thought was best utilized between the tackles. Adrian Martinez may yet get his chance in the NFL.
Having said that, I agree we haven't recruited thoroughbreds. A part of that is the recruiting sites. How does a player go from a 3 star in July to a 4 star in August? Are there phantom games being played? And don't get me started on regional bias. A top track guy in Nebraska is touted as incredibly fast when his time wouldn't beat 30 guys from Florida. Also, one site might say 4 star and three others say mid 3, everyone touts the outlier as the right one. Check the recruiting sub-forum. The headlines are quick to say 4star when most others rank the player as a three. We overestimate the talent coming in.

On paper, both Riley and Frost recruited fairly well. I'm using 24/7's rankings

2015 - 30th ranked class. Considering there are ~115 FBS programs, having a class in the Top 30 should mean you have at least a team that can be competitive with anyone.

2016 - 26th

2017 - 23rd

2018 - 23rd

2019 - 17th

2020 - 20th

2021 - 20th

2022 - 41st (okay this class is not so great).

2023 - 25th

2024 - 18th

2025 - 22nd

2026 - Currently 72nd (YIKES) This class is shaping up to be a lowly rated class simply because it is expected to be a small class.

Point is, on paper, both Frost and Riley recruited fairly well with classes consistently in the Top 30. The hypothetical I always ask myself is give the classes Riley and Frost recruited to Nick Saban and his Alabama staff, to Ryan Day at Ohio State, Dabo Sweeny at Clemson--give these recruits to an actual competent coaching staff and I am 99% sure we have much better results than what we had. Would we have won a natty? Probably not, but a conference championship I think was plausible. Coaching and development were 100% missing from the two previously mentioned Nebraska coaching staffs.

Of note, for the 2026 class, if you look at the average star recruit ranking in this class, the Huskers are averaging a score of 88 for their players. This means that if you rank the teams according to combined average of the star rankings in the class, Nebraska's 2026 class would currently be ranked 28th.

Now is 28th amazing or worthy of extreme excitement? Probably not, but it sure as heck looks a lot better than 72nd.

I was listening to a Sports Nightly show from a couple nights ago and Damon Benning said something to Kyle Crooks that really caught my attention.

DB said, "This is the first time in eighteen years, if not longer, that the coaches feel super-confident with putting any of ten OL men on the field." He went on to say that in this age of CFB, that's a really unique deal.

I'm no OL coach, but I will add that it's been a long time since I've seen an OL room where the guys all LOOK LIKE they were part of our old Pipeline. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the secret to TO's 25 years of success was that he always had good OLs.

YES! Welcome to the crowd. You've officially entered the senior citizen category! :) ;)
or did you change your screen name?
@HuskersNC949597 already had me beat for the The Longest Damn Screen Name on the board so I had no incentive for keeping it. So, after 21 and a half years, I thought it was time. Think of me as an old 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' restaurant who got "modernized" to 'KFC.'

The sad truth is that most posters nowadays haven't a clue that there was once a Fumblerooski play, let alone that Nebraska made it famous. Fun fact, The NCAA banned the play 32 years ago. Sigh.

Anyhoo, I've been 'Doc' or 'Fumble' or 'DrF' to my friends here for years now so nothing really changed. I'm hoping it's a good luck charm for this season. GO BIG RED!
