I have been thinking about some of the things Coach Rhule said at B1G Media Days:
* Supported Scott Frost
* Said the HC position at Nebraska wasn't a good job.
* Talked about the rash of knee injuries.
* Believes they can play with anyone.
* Ownership, saying I have to do better, not pointing fingers at others.
1. I understand why Coach Rhule said the positive things about Scott Frost. I do not share his sentiments, but I understand the politic nature of his answer. It just speaks to how genuine and classy Matt Rhule is. And to this point, Even in 2023 when when scumbag Deon Sanders, like the p.o.s. he is, tried to say that Coach Rhule disrespected him. We all knew it was horse droppings, but that's the way Sanders operates.
2. I looked at the support from the fans--even during the run of seven consecutive losing seasons, the huge, state of the art weight room, recovery pools and other programs, training table, locker facilities, support staff (both academic and athletic), and thought that Nebraska was one of the best jobs a HC could take--that everything was in place a coach needed to win. So to hear Coach Rhule say the HC position at Nebraska wasn't a good job and then followed it up by saying it's becoming a great job kinda hurt my pride a little bit.
3. Coach Rhule is truly something special because he is the ONLY coach who saw that our practice fields and the turf in Memorial Stadium was bad. He is the ONLY coach that looked at the rash of ACL tears and other knee injuries our players suffered and connected the dots to the bad field. Pelini, Riley, and certainly Frost never did anything like that. And insisting that large capital investments be made to fix the practice and stadium surface is absolutely huge and I think isn't talked about enough.
4. The belief that this team can play with anyone was so refreshing to hear. As Rhule said, they still have to go out and perform, but the fact that he says he like the team and where they're at: physically, mentally, and emotionally speaks volumes to the work they've put in. I appreciate that both Coach Rhule and Henry Lutovsky are both not shy about saying they have aspirations of getting to the national championship. I understand some people are saying that's too far of a stretch, we're probably a year away, etc. While I certainly understand the incremental approach, especially since that is Matt Rhule's basic philosophy, I cannot help but ask, why not this year? The players have to go out and do it, but as I see it, we finally have all the pieces to return to the elite of college football.
5. I really loved how Coach Rhule has repeatedly emphasized that you know an organization has the right culture when people say I have to do better instead of blaming others. I am continually amazed at Matt Rhule because he's the first coach (at Nebraska and anywhere else really) who has instituted this "I have to get better" culture. How many times did we hear Pelini or Frost blame the players? Never once did either of those two ever say, "I looked into the mirror, and I need to do better."
In summary, I don't know what the 2025 season has in store for the Nebraska football team. All evidence and signs point to a Nebraska resurgence, but as Coach said, they have to go out and do it.
Today fall camp starts and the season will be here before we know it. It's going to be interesting to see how this team plays. I don't think we'll really know anything substantial about this team until after the Michigan game. To my way of thinking, beating Michigan is crucial to the rest of the season. Beating Michigan, 1) it'll put that turd Desmond Howard in his place, and 2) the Huskers win that game and then they will know they can play with anyone. They'll have proof of concept so to speak. Football is a game of momentum and all the Huskers need is to get some going. As the adage goes, winning is contagious, unfortunately so is losing. So here's me hoping that all the things Coach Rhule says are fixed, are actually fixed.
