D Line Coach Watch

I'd suspect they're (aTm) negotiating him to take on the DC job outright.
The number one consideration with any position coach hire is: What caliber of studs are you able to attract?

Once upon a time, head coaches had to weight the pros & cons of hiring great recruiters who might not be the best coaches in the world (Callahan's staff was a prime example.) But nowadays, programs like A&M and Nebraska can hire a bunch of aspiring "I Wanna Become A Big Bucks Coach Someday" to help make up the difference.

A&M's move to hire a great OL recruiter but a so-so DC emphasizes the point: It's all about getting the studs in your locker room.

I disagree. While yes, you want someone who can recruit, you need someone who can teach for those years you dont get the super studs to come here. And even the "super studs" need to be taught. We have found that out here all to often.

Just keep the coke and donor's wives away and we're golden.

Fair point. I was just opining that with the assistant position coaches now on staff, the needle might move more towards the "top recruiter" vs "top coach 'em up" side of the scale.

Ah....had to give him Co-DC title to get him to come back I see.
To be transparent here, I wanted Robinson to come here. But when you start messing with Co-coordinator titles, that can get icky in more ways that one. As much as I was attracted to him, that would have been aaaaaaawkward to do here when we just hired a new DC.

All in all, I think we may have avoided walking thru a mine field.

For all my complaining about the NFL heavy hires by Matt, what about Dave Tollefson? Anyone have any thoughts?

The DL wants Rhule to be their full time DL coach.
Would certainly make for an interesting chain of command.

Aurich walks into Matt Rhule's office:
"Coach, we need to talk. Turn your hat around."
Rhule turns hat. Bill-n-da-back
"Sure Rob, what's up?"
Aurich
"You really need to start pressing our inside guys with their gap integrity. It's terrible. And our rush ends are not effectively using their hands to shed blocks."
Rhule
"Yes sir. We'll spend some extra time in practice today working on all of that. Anything else?"
Aurich
"Just get it done. I don't want to have to go to the boss about this."
Rhule
"Consider it done."

They stare at each other for a few seconds, and Aurich (without leaving the office) does a 360 while Rhule turns his hat back to bill in front.

Rhule
"Hey Rob, how are things going with the Blackshirts?"
Aurich
"We'll see. I'm having a few issues with the guys up front and proper technique." I just spoke to Coach about it. I'll give it a few practices to see if he can get it straightened out."
Rhule
"Let me know if there is anything I can do to help."
Aurich
"Yeah, right Coach."
