Pretty much sums up my thoughts regarding Lane Kiffen. Not just because of this last move.
PSU needs to hire their interim coach. He won 3 games as interim as was a foot and a few seconds away from upsetting #2 Indiana. The players love the dude.
Players love to fight for their interim coach. That doesn’t mean that the interim knows how to be a full time head coach (recruiting, roster building, dealing with boosters, etc). And it doesn’t mean that the agents for the players won’t get them to flee for greener pastures.
Would this be PSU's "Gary Gibbs" moment? They sure as heck hamstrung Smith by destroying this year's recruiting class by not making a decision. Does PSU have the resources to fill the holes in the portal? Sure - but you need some relationships built and I doubt the current staff has had much of chance to work on those given the uncertainty around the next head coach. The fact they fired Franklin and didn't have a pretty good idea of who they wanted to hire is a bit shocking. Maybe Smith works out. Players support him. But given how challenging the NIL/Portal era is (see Dabo) it is far from a sure thing hire (if such a thing even exists) - nobody expected Cigaretti to do what he has at IU......bringing the best players from his prior job certainly helped - Smith won't have that "boost" to his roster.
If they choose not to promote Terry Smith I want Rhule to bring him on Nebraskas staff.
