B1G about to have a "surprise" expansion.

Oh yeah:
ND vs. BC "Holy War"
ND vs. Miami "Catholics vs Convicts"
ND vs. Nebraska "Why do we have to play these f***ers again?, Eric Crouch ate our lunch."
Fun fact: Once upon a time, Nebraska vs Notre Dame had a ten-year series that became a heated 'rivalry thing' too.

But Nebraska fans reportedly went a little 'over-the-top' on their Anti-Catholic rhetoric so Knute Rockne said 'no more' back in the mid-20s. (However, the Huskers beating ND's now-legendary Four Horsemen two years in a row (the fearsome foursome's only losses) might have had something to do with it too.) :)

If the conference kept the Big Ten title after Penn State.....and then Nebraska....and then Rutgers and Maryland, I seriously doubt the addition of USC and UCLA is going to make any difference. :)

Ok But I still think "The Big" should be the new name and I don't care what anyone thinks. Just think, some Oklahoma fan is like but we are in the SEC and we can be like "But the SEC is not THE BIG..." Actually now that I think about it. We ended up in the Big 10 and they ended up in the SEC. I think we got the better deal.

Big Ten expansion, realignment speculation: Conference 'coming back for more' Pac-12 teams

College conference expansion and realignment chatter continues to swirl and the Big Ten Conference is right in the thick of the conversation.

The latest speculation? The Big Ten "isn't finished raiding the Pac-12."

Matt Hayes of Saturday Tradition reported the news over the weekend, citing an industry source that said "“If anyone thinks the Big Ten isn’t coming back for more, they’re not following along,” about the possibility that the Big Ten would seek to add more teams from the conference after poaching USC and UCLA.

Why would the Big Ten attempt to expand more into the Pac-12?

Hayes wrote: "Because the Big Ten isn’t leaving USC and UCLA alone on the West coast. It must protect its investment."

According to Hayes, Washington, Oregon, Stanford and California "are the dream addition for the Big Ten if it can find the funding" with Washington and Oregon the preferred additions should the conference only have the fudning for two more Pac-12 schools.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Would the academics like to add Stanford and Cal-Berkley to the conference? You Bet!

But from an athletic perspective, NONE of the remaining Pac-12 teams add dollars to the B1G's revenue. The only viable team that does is Notre Dame.

My money is on adding Notre Dame and Stanford. Could two more Pac-12 teams be added (e.g. Oregon and Washingon) sure. But if I'm Trev Alberts and the other ADs, I'd wouldn't want to decrease my annual B1G take just to add more Pac-12 teams.

Funny, how all these 'speculation' articles seem to be coming from out West and not out of Indianapolis. ;)

Oregon would add revenue. Stanford would add academic credibility and plenty of alumni $$$ backing athletics. I don't see enough of that for Washington and Cal-Berkley.

Agree Notre Dame makes a TON of sense - but Free Shoes University has asked the ACC what it would cost to leave. If that happens it will be a race for the SEC and Big 10 to sign up the teams worth having (Notre Dame, Clemson, FSU and North Carolina being the cherries worth plucking) - FSU wants to go to the SEC if they are asking about leaving. Clemson would be a much better fit in the SEC than Big 10. ND and NC would fit within the Big 10 IMHO - and are WAY, WAY better choices than Washington and Cal-Berkley.

Seattle is the 12th largest sports market in the US - so there's that TV value.
Oregon would add revenue.
I am not disputing that teams like Washington and Oregon would add value. They would corner their area's sports market and add a national alumni base following.

But the bigger the conference gets, the more money it takes for a new member to 'make everybody a profit.' The SEC pulled off a coup when it landed Texas (and to a smaller extent, OU.) The Big Ten countered with the LA market by taking USC and UCLA. Those acquisitions made sense from both a prestige and a financial perspective.

But while they were great, those recent acquisitions made it EVEN HARDER to make adding any new teams a financially viable option for conference members.

The reason that the Big Ten is in the thick of the conversation is because of Notre Dame.

It is The Big Dawg when it comes to adding value to a conference. The Irish would very much like to keep its snooty-fruity independent status -- and I think their Powers-that-Be have been exploring ways they could draw in the mega-bucks while remaining independent. The hard reality is that their best play financially is to join the Big Ten. THAT is the program that would "float all boats" when it comes to increasing all members' take-home pay. For all the talk about 'conference expansion,' that's the only program the Big Ten still covets.

We were in Anacortes for a bit last year. I swear half the locals I met were originally from Seattle or Portland. They couldn't wait to leave both. All seem to agree that if entanglements didn't keep people there that anyone with half a brain would leave both. :Iono3:

Does the Big ever expand into Texas? Dallas (TCU) is the fifth-largest market in the country. Houston is the seventh largest market. Then the Big would be from Canada to Mexico, Atlantic to Pacific.
