2025 Offseason Cornhusker Cornucopia

A few random questions about three Huskers that somebody here might know something about...

Nwaneri. I've heard that rushing the QB is still a concern on defense this Spring (which, conversely, is a good sign for our OL). Seems to me we haven't heard anything this Spring about William Nwaneri, the hot shot edge rusher from Mizzou. Anybody know if he's having trouble adjusting?

Bell. We keep talking about our packed WR room but our hot shot WR from last year, Demitrius Bell got injured in Spring Ball and was out for the season. He's still with us, right? As I recall, he was a "wow" guy last spring until he got injured. I would think he's going to another weapon for Dylan this fall.

Noonan. He was touted back when he was first signed and has been battling injuries until now. Anybody know if LB, Maverick Noonan, is going to live up to his billing at some point or is he a future portal guy?

I don't believe any of them got posted here, but I've seen some Youtube headlines from some of the not-ready-for-primetime Youtubers proclaiming that the Huskers are 'losing the battle' for Nebraska players. Yeah, Iowa State has been cleaning up in the state this year, but what does that tell you?

I was glad to see Coach Rhule address the issue in today's presser. He made it crystal clear that he wants great homegrown talent. But not taking guys---particularly taking guys early--is NOT a sign that: 1) we don't care; or 2) we're losing to out-of-state recruiters. Rhule said it best: "I'm here to win football games" and there's a big talent difference between the B1G/SEC and the Big XII. He followed up by saying the former coaches who tried to please everybody aren't here anymore.

That wasnt always the case. The BIG XII used to have just as much talent as anyone around. And the HUSKERS had tons of Nebraska kids on its roster when it was playing and/or winning MNCs. Yes today the talent level between the three conferences are far different but that doesnt mean Nebraska kids cant play at this level.

I never said they can't. We've got some stud players on the team from Nebraska--and that will continue.

Coach Rhule said today that the Huskers will go after every home grown kid the program believes can help them. But with the 105 limit (bye-bye walk-ons) and the level of competition in this New Age B1G, there won't be as many Homegrown Huskers as there has been in the past.

Despite the negative crap we've heard and will continue to hear on the interwebs, it has nothing to do with: a) not caring about Nebraska kids anymore; and b) getting 'out-recruited' by the Iowa States of the Big XII.

And to your point, there is (I believe) ZERO reason for Nebraska to ever recruit an offensive lineman from another state.

Since we're running a "pro-style" offense, OL and FB are two positions we should always be able to find in-state. We can also find other positions in state, although those players may have to change positions at the college level. For example, say there is a 6'2" 200lb kid playing TE in 8 man football out in the western half of the state and this kid is really athletic and can run. So maybe at the college level he's not a TE, maybe he's a RB, or LB, or S. Point is, with a little creativity, Coach Rhule can maximize the in-state talent he does take. This puts an obvious emphasis on identifying and evaluating talent.

I agree with Coach Rhule that we want the best players within the state to stay home. However, with the 105 limit, you have to be extremely selective about who you offer a scholarship to. And unfortunately, with the walk-on program going away, there will be in-state kids that we just can't offer.

We haven't had high quality coaching since Tom Osborne.
If the coaching hasn’t been great, wouldn’t that mean you’d be better off getting players already physically ready rather than guys that will take at least 3 years to develop under said coaches?

The players "already physically ready" are 5 stars. Few coaches, outside of Ohio State, Georgia, and Texas, have the luxury of pulling in a whole bunch of them.

1. Interior OL and DL typically take 2-3 years to be ready to play.

2. The number OL and DL that are pbysically ready to play right out of high school is small and certainly no guarantee we could recruit them.

3. Bad coaching gives us bad players and bad records.

Here's something interesting...
In 1972 the first pick in the NFL draft was Defensive End Walt Patulski of Notre Dame.
Walt was lauded for his freakish speed. He could run a 40 yard dash in 4.9 seconds at 6'6" and 250 lbs.
Today, we have Ty Robinson-6'5" 288 lbs. He ran the 40 in 4.83. He's projected as a day 3 draft choice.
The difference in the last 50 years is incredible.

If Ty Robinson is still around waiting to be drafted on Day 3, then these NFL coaches and managers are idiots. I'm not saying he's a Day 1, 1st round pick, but but I could see him going in Round 2 certainly.

According to this...

NFL Draft 2025 Best Remaining Players - ESPN

Ty Robinson is the 12th best rated DT.

Not to be a homer, but if there are 11 DTs better than Ty Robinson, I'll eat my own bra. Of course I won't really do that, it's just my way of saying there is no effing way there are 11 DTs better than Ty. Zero chance.

I saw something on X today that made me shake my head: Nebraska's losing streak vs. ranked teams is 27. The next worst in the B1G is Northwestern, at 11.

At least the stupid bowl monkey is off our backs...
