Yeah, I get it, innmc. But next to acquiring talent, preparation is The Most Important Thing that separates the okay/meh coaches from the really good ones.I hear ya Fumble but it's not just the games it's the preparation. For many seasons it has looked like they have not been coached, prepared enough come game day.
Holgerson has said it's going to take some time maybe even a season or so for everyone, coaches and players, to be comfortable and accustomed to the offense. So, I'm tempering my expectations for this season.
Yesterday, Holgorsen talked about his off-season work. I found it interesting because of what his focus was. Did he hint at a bunch of fancy, new offensive schemes? Nope. He talked over and over about cutting down last year's offense, our last four games and even more over the winter break. What??!? This hot-shot, offensive genius wasn't crafting a whole bunch of exciting, new plays and formations?!!!?
Right or wrong, I took his comments to mean that he's taking our very best plays and practicing them over and over and over again. Osborne's play sheet was limited, but his players ran the ones he had well. I remember thinking back in the Callahan days that all the hoopla over his 500-page playbook didn't mean diddily-squat if his offense sucked at running them.
Holgorsen laid it all out yesterday. Screw the air raid! He said his offense is going to be a tough-minded, physical unit that runs the ball half the time. But he said he wants to focus on improving our third down conversion rate and our TD percentage in the redzone. That takes knowing what plays work based on your personnel, the players you have this year, and preparation. If Holgorsen isn't twice as good at preparing Dylan and his bunch than Satterfield was, I don't know CFB.
