Next #1 QB ?

I don't th

NIL is not there yet but it may be at some point. For the most part the best players getting NIL can expect is some walking around money, a car they can use, and a killer entertainment system for the dorm. Now- there are exceptions - guys with more than 1 car, enough money to get their family moved to a decent situation (aka "Reggie Bush money"), or in a few cases a chance to put money away so they can consider delaying the NFL and riding the NIL train as far as it will go.
They offered the kid 1 million to come there. Thats hardly "walking around money".

I try not to be too vindictive, but I confess I do smile just a little every time an NIL booster gets burned on his investment. I still like the title STUDENT athlete.
Sadly that ship has sailed and I don't think it will turn around. People have been saying that this will kill college football as we know it. I suspect there is a lot of truth to that statement.

I guess I'll refer back to my post in the previous thread. NIL is here, and is here to stay, but some rules really need to be applied before things get so far out of hand that there is no way back. What happened to the standard stipend everyone (including TO) was talking about.

me 2. loved that when the kid made 1 mill and left Ohio st. LOL.

If I were a really rich type and could offer elite players lucrative NIL deals, I'd have a contingency clause stating if said player transfers from Nebraska, then said NIL deal is null and void.

and paid back

Great point. An exception I would allow for is if the coaching staff was fired, or the head coach left for another program or the league and then the player didn't want to play for the new staff.

Under such scenarios, the NIL would be voided, but said player wouldn't have to pay it back because of events that are out of his control.

These rando big NIL offers to backwater non-Power 5 schools are probably happening - but no player with offers to a better school would take that even for alot less NIL. The reason? how long until those Baker Mayfield at home in Browns stadium commercials get canned........soon I hope)

Amazing how much money a mediocre QB can make in endorsement deals— whatever he pays his agent isn’t enough

GBR

While both of us hate this I like the idea a friend of mine put out there given the situation.
Hire a good FCS coach, someone who can really stress fundamentals. Pay him 500 grand. Then use the funds to buy the best players you can.

Yes I'm sure you are going to get a really good coach to come here for 500 grand. Not a chance.

The qb derby now favors Casey Thompson.....for now.

I would be pretty happy with that. For you long timers having Charles Thompson's kid play for Texas and Nebraska would have sounded like insanity 30 some years ago.

It always favored Thompson.

It'll be the new success model.

I'm sure nothing bad could ever happen putting big money into the hands of 18-year old college freshmen.

Finally got around to listening to the above. It was worth the effort.

Two things that Sean said really stuck out for me.......1) The worst thing about the portal isn't that the players are packing their bags, it's that coaches are using it to run (scare) kids out. I think this is true. Players might think the grass is greener........but so can coaches, and a little intimidation can go a long way. Once the players enter, they lose the guarantee of their scholarship. Scary position to be in if they've been misled.

2) The position group that you might want to look at if you want to see what kind of success our quarterback will have is the O-line ( he also mentioned the rbs). I got the distinct feeling Donovan has his work cut out for him.

If he's as good at developing players as I've been told we'll be fine. We have probably the most talented OL we've had in awhile. They just needed a different view IMO. Donovan brings that. I guess we'll find out if he was worth going after come the fall.
