What was your most disappointing loss/hardest-to-take loss as a Huskers fan?

Born the year after the 84 Orange Bowl, I think the first loss that really bugged me for more than a few hours after the game was the Texas game in 1999. The fumble at the goal line, the awful officiating that ruled a clear catch by Matt Davison incomplete to the extent that Brent Musberger was going ballistic at the officials. . .yuck (8-year-old me didn't really pay that close attention to the screw job vs FSU, I was more into messing around with Legos or whatever during football games until the next year, late bloomer or something). But make no mistake, there were games after that which still make me mad thinking about today :ashamed0001:
Took me awhile to process this, NC. Like, What? You were born in 1985? Then I realized that makes you 41 years old. Damn, time is going faster and faster.

1. The '84 Orange Bowl loss to Miami (following a record-setting '83 season) will always be the most disappointing loss for me. It is #1 in a class all by itself. Over time, I have come to the realization that TO made the right call in going for two. At the time, I didn't see it that way.

2. After that, there were many Oklahoma losses from which to choose. I'd say the most disappointing was the 1976 trick play at the last second that won the game for OU. I was in high school and held Orange Bowl tickets. It would have been my first Nebraska game in person. I wound up selling them to an Ohio State fan. We were pre-season #1 that year.

3. I'm not one to blame officiating for losses. You have to rise above "the breaks." But the 1994 Orange Bowl vs. Florida State had so many horrible calls it was beyond the pale. TO said in an interview that an independent officiating group analyzed the game and found 13 major mistakes, 10 of which went against Nebraska.

I have come to the reluctant conclusion the call was right---BUT...

Who here thinks if the rolls were reversed, NEBRASKA would have gotten the same call?
I strongly suspect the officials would have simply left the field, end of story.

I was going to say we did get the same call vs Florida State in the 1994 Orange Bowl. However, after going back and looking at the end of that game, Tommie Frazier hit TE Trumane Bell up the seam on a pass and Bell was tackled with clearly :02 seconds left on the clock. So no the situation wasn't the same regarding the ending of the FSU and Texas game respectively.

'82 Penn State. They don't get the completion in the 3rd row of seats call, because it WAS SO blatantly a bad call, and we win the NC.

Had several heartbreakers. Could have had another two or three national championships. Penn state and a bad call. The Miami 2 point conversion to win. The first one for me was Nebraska at USC on a late Saturday night. The good memories fortunately outweigh the heartbreakers.

There may have been a second remaining on the clock when the ball hit something...but that call (end of game) had never at that point been overruled by "instant replay" of a ball being thrown out of bounds and I don't know that it has been overruled since then. It stunk of Texas officials giving Texas a chance that nobody else would have received.

I was thinking about that game and my disappointment level vs. Mizzou 78 - and I think Mizzou 78 was more impactful at the time because it was end of the season and the Huskers were set-up for a MNC opportunity in the Orange Bowl. Instead we got to play OU again...... That early in the 82 season there was no way to know for sure we'd play for the MNC if we win that game. Sure both teams had high expectations....but there wasn't the finality of that Mizzou loss. As 1982 played out - the fact we got jobbed in Crappy Valley became something to be pissed off about more than anything. PSU got rolled by Alabama in their next game (mostly due to turnovers) so not sure PSU was a clear #1 if you compare resumes of both teams. But voters didn't go against head to head losses back then given the choice and excuses like the refs screwed us didn't get you any voter sympathy. Ironically - PSU is likely who Nebraska would have played in the Orange Bowl after the 78 season if they had beaten Mizzou.
