As some of you know, my little Shih Tzu, Gracie, was my constant companion and loved to sit next to me to watch Husker football games. Her first game was the Wyoming game on August 31, 2013. Her last was this past Saturday. Fourteen seasons of Husker football.

Gracie was put to sleep on Wednesday. She had lived with a partially collapsed trachea over the past year causing her to cough occasionally. Recently, she had a hard time breathing after exerting herself. We took Gracie to the Ohio State Vet Hospital on Monday. They discovered she had pulmonary hypertension and put her in an oxygen cage which helped. But her prognosis was not good. She had breathing difficulties outside the cage. She would not have been able to come home with us and maintain a normal lifestyle. So we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep…one of the most difficult decisions my wife and I have ever made. I will miss her dearly on Husker football game days. She would have been 14 next week.

I’m not on social media, but a couple of BHF members asked me a few weeks ago if she was ready for another season. Thus, my reason for posting this. Plus it's a little cathartic as well.

Those of us with pets understand what the loss of a beloved pet means. Based on what I've seen (avatars) and heard around here, it appears our BHF family has a whole bunch of furry Husker fans who help us cheer on Saturdays.

We are all sorry to hear the news about Gracie and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Before I married my wife she had a cat named Princess that LOVED to watch TV with me - would get on the couch for football games in particular. She wasn't much of a lap cat but wanted to be "in the action" of whatever was being watched. After we got married she had a long battle with cancer. At one point we had a feeding tube surgically placed in her abdomen and she would get on the couch to get fed while I watched football (and other things). Hard to let a companion like that go for sure.

We're still grieving. It will take some time to get over this...if we ever do.
I'm a firm believer that when it's our time, we'll be greeted by our family and friends who went before us--including the furry kind.

I suspect my marriage is due to my then-girl friend's cat, Kashka. Before I came into the picture, Mrs Fumble was convinced that her cat hated all men. But from the get-go, Kashka took a liking to me.

A memory I'll always treasure is waking up in bed one morning to find Kashka perched on my chest staring down at me. It was the first time I'd slept over. She had a curious look on her face that said, "What the heck are YOU doing here??!?" It still makes me smile every time I think about it.

Sorry for your loss.

Some people might think mourning your doggo is silly, but I don't. Truth is, I'd rather have 10 doggos around me than 10 people.

It has been over a decade now since I had to put my doggo down, but even now, if I think about it too long, I still get misty eyed.

My condolences.

Thanks, Doc. We're still grieving. It will take some time to get over this...if we ever do.

You will- and in some ways you wont'. Sorry for losing your companion.
Just today I drove by the vet where we took my cat of 18 years for the last time, about 15 years ago. Still gave me a pang.

Jeopardy, I’m so sorry. It is such a heartache when we start to realize that our furr babies are slowing down, and it is just a matter of time before it is time. They love us unconditionally even to the end when they are in pain and suffering, they still manage a weak wag of the tail or a lick of your hand. Our kids are out of the house, but our fur babies take their place now. Just know this, Gracie always knew that she was the best pooch ever in your mind, and that’s all she needed.

Thanks, Doc. One of the biggest problems we are having right now is that the house seems so empty. We were so used to the little tyke running around the house. Or laying on one of her beds while my wife and I were watching TV or reading.

Thank you, 99. I agree with your dogs vs. people comment.

The hardest, but most important thing we do as pet owners is to make the difficult decision to do what is best for our pets. Hub and I discussed this before we started getting pets and we agreed that we would never keep one of our pets alive just because we didn't want to go through the hurt of losing a pet. It's always such a horrible day and I feel like I'm never going to get over the ache but each day gets a little better. I'm a firm believer that all of our pets who have proceeded us in death will be waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. So very sorry for the loss of your Husker buddy. She was a cutie pie!!!

She was in good health until the cough started a year ago. Gracie's parents and grandparents lived to 16 to 18 years old. So we felt we'd have her around for another three years or so. You just never know. Gracie was a certified therapy dog. My wife used to take her to hospitals and schools. She had great empathy for patients and little kids used to love reading to her. Thank you for your comments.

Years and years ago, hub and I purchased our first St Bernard, named Guenther (you might notice my moniker in his name). He absolutely adored my hub whose manners were atrocious if the Chiefs and/or Huskers were not playing to his satisfaction. I swear to you that on the first play of either game, Guenther would bolt towards the back door, demanding to be let outside. He would then go to the furthest point in the yard and refuse to budge until Hub came out after the game and explained to him that it was "safe" to come in now. LOL. If any other teams were playing, Guenther would lay on the floor by hub's feet for the entire game. I'm not sure if he actually recognized the announcers saying the names Chiefs and Huskers or if he picked up a tension or electricity in Hub that I couldn't detect. It's been years and some days I still really miss that dog. He was just incredible!

I'm not a big pet owner type anymore. Not since my sons were young. But I understand pet loss by those that do.

My dad kept the ashes of his, and my brother actually has a portion of his yard dedicated for a cemetary for his, even with metal silhouettes.

I hope you find solace soon Jeopardy.
