Tom Osborne on Rhule

Not sure I learned much - outside of TO talking to Grant Teaff about Rhule and getting what sounded like 2 thumbs up.

I think we should all just take a deep breath now and hope that Rhule is the answer. If he isn't then Trev may be looking for a new career, because it was his assignment to fix the football program. Nobody is going to rave about his administering the golf, volleyball, tennis, baseball or wrestling teams. Football is the issue. Basketball has been mediocre for so long, not that many people really care about it.

The linebacker (rush end) from Iowa did a good job. It's a new era for Nebraska football.

You got right, football is king. Rhule wins or they both leave

honestly..its a total crap shoot on selecting a coach. no one knows who will turn out or not, until they either do or not. we all thought frost was a homerun hire and i'm sure a lot of 'bama fans had their doubts about bringing saban to UA after his not so great run as the miami coach. michigan state paid out the nose and other orifices for their coach. they're pretty bad, especially considering the money paid. same as jimbo fisher. Rhule is about as good as a guess as any of the others that came up.

This isn't an overnight one season turnaround. Everyone knows that. I expect to see a better team and a better record next season, but we all want to be competing for the big prize someday and that is going to take time.

I have a theory...

These huge coaching contracts are BAD for college football because it mostly removes any motivation. Very precious few (like Nick Saban) have the motivation and drive to succeed once they're guaranteed millions of dollars.

Put it this way, it is human nature. If you're gonna get paid 6 million a year whether you go 12-0 or 0-12, where's your motivation? Or, how much do you really going to care if your team goes 5-7 or 7-5? You're getting paid regardless, so who gives a sh**?

I am fine with college coaches making 5-9 million annually, but I still believe contracts should be performance and results contingent, and not guaranteed.

Or, if nothing else, start saying okay, we'll pay you 8 million a year, but if you fail, you get NOTHING--no huge contract buyout.

Huge contracts are in,,,,you dont give them what they want, they will go someplace else and you get a tier 3 coach on the cheap.

I do agree with this. There are people out there that do jobs like this because they really enjoy it and money doesn’t matter it’s just an added bonus. Not everyone is cut out to coach and mentor. Some get into because of money.

I’ve seen this same thing in academia now that I’m teaching College on the side. My job seeing patients pays significantly more than my job teaching…However, my teaching job and helping young people learn a trade and get into a technical field that will take care of them for the rest of their life gives me more satisfaction.

I think anytime someone jumps into something just for the money, they will struggle giving it their all.

He did hire a really good men's golf coach though. Judd is great.

Your theory has a big hole in it. Rhule could make just as much money setting on his duff. He had a 10.5 million guarantee.

He is coaching because he loves the game, not for the money.

We’re so far removed from the Devaney-Osborne era that this seemingly non-stop ritual of having the new coach talk to TO and kiss his ring has gotten almost laughable.

The wifey and I are on vacation in Arizona. I was playing cards at a casino on Friday and an old woman saw my “N” shirt and said, “You’re either stupid or brave to be announcing you’re for Nebraska.” “Excuse me?” I replied, taken aback. (It’s not been my best weekend.). She said you started the season with one coach who went to REHAB and ended with another coach who went to JAIL!

Turns out she and her husband were transplanted Nebraskans from Wayne so it was all good but she did strike a nerve. Any moral high ground we once thought the program had has gone away and will need a serious rebuilt along with our football team.

99’s comment should give us Husker fans some warm, fuzzy feelings about Coach Rhule. He could have relaxed and played golf for the same money he’s getting to coach Nebraska. He’s here not for the money but because he saw this program as the perfect fit for his coaching philosophy. And he’s here because Trev saw he’s a grinder—it’s part of his DNA. Coach was at North Stadium at 5:30 am the next morning.

Beyond all that he appears to be a good character guy with a young family excited to be living in Lincoln. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that when Momma’s happy, everybody’s happy.

Face it, we’re all scarred and have become conditioned to be skeptical. But to me, the start of the Rhule era is like a refreshing hot shower. It’s time to have fun with Husker Football again.
