The Heart of Huskerland, Lincoln, NE
After a particularly brutal season and now, after a gut-punch of a loss, it's natural to be spitting nails and wanting a complete overhaul. But as bad as things are right now (and YES, they are really bad), it's not the end of the world. In the immortal words of Annie, 'the sun will come out tomorrow.' Here's a few reasons to step away from the cliff:
  1. Nebraska is Still an Elite. Nebraska has lost a hell of a lot of games over the past six years but it hasn't lost what makes it one of CFB's elites. It's still a bigtime program in CFB's premeir conference with an incredible fan base and world-class facilities. Most of the nation's big sports Athletic Directors would die to have what Trev Alberts has.
  2. The Problems are not as Bad as they Appear. We, fans grouse about the sad state of our lines but in football everything gets exaggerated. IMO, this is one of those cases where things aren't as bad as one might think at first glance. We had a whole damn line's worth of injuries on the OL this year that certainly influenced our results. On the DL side, the heart of the unit was young and inexperienced. I'm not saying they're gonna be world-beaters next season, but we are not in 'The Sky is Falling' mode.
  3. We've got the Right AD at the Right Time. Until proven otherwise, I'd like to believe we have a knowledgeable, football-savy AD who is going to attract a HC who will set the stage for a bigtime comeback. IMO, our current situation is tailor-made for a talented 'Bob Devaney'-like HC to come to Lincoln and make a national splash.
  4. The Cupboard is not Bare. We've got some talent still on this team. We just need a new HC who will keep them here and who will attract other good players to join them.
  5. Nebraska is an NIL Leader. That fact goes a long with with a new, exciting leader, to fill key holes during our program's rebuild.
  6. We need to Get Back to Husker Football. The talking heads mantra of 'Nebraska's glory days are over' is BS. Nebraska has way too much going for it to be relegated to the has-been crowd -- unless we fans allow it to happen. You'd think at some point, our leadership would quit tripping over themselves and simply return to the core principles -- The Nebraska Way -- that once made it the best program in CFB. The Huskers will be back, it's only a question of how long it will take for the right coaching staff to wake up this sleeping giant.
  7. The Key is finding the Best Available HC Coach who takes the Job with the Right Philosophy. I want Trev to give us The Best Available HC on the market -- as long as that coach embraces the core principles that made us great -- and can make us great again. IMO, those principles are: 1) striving to be The Most Physical Team on the field each week; 2) a focus on effectively running the ball and 3) a focus on effectively stopping the run. And this is NOT some halfass attempt at 'pining away for the old glory days.' Simply put, it's the recipe for winning in the Big Ten, period. And, BTW, it doesn't mean we become one-dimensional either. We need all the components of a great team if we want to experience championship-level success -- but I truly believe it all starts with a commitment to the core principles that embodied The Nebraska Way back in the day. The more CFB changes, the more it still comes down to the same old things.
I'd like to think everything happens for a reason. While it's hard to imagine the program falling any lower than it is right now, I'd like to believe it will make being a Husker fan all the more sweeter when our next coach turns things around. Anybody who believes our time has come and gone and that a program as historically significant as ours can't regain its mojo just needs to look at the Tennessee Vols. We just need to hang in there.

A lot of your points could be argued but I digress, it's been done a gazillion times already. I do like your positivity though, Doc.

Well, if it's a Bob Devaney type you're looking for. There is another Wyoming coach named Craig Bohl up there.

J/K. No, I'm serious...I'm J/K

Good post DR. The real solution is the right HC. Look how fast Illinois turned their team around and they don't have half the positives that NU has.

A lot of the change that needs to take place is attitude. They need to turn their despair into a sense of urgency. Our mob football intelligence among players is painfully lacking when it comes to closing out games. Frost let in too many players and coaches from mediocre traditions, and failed to load up on big time winners. He was too worried about Class C Nebraska champions when there are 5A champions elsewhere. You can absorb a raw athlete, like a Yant. But you surround him with great talent to challenge him to step it up. A small town champion from a class of 50 has no idea what its like to compete against a class of 700 to 1000. He certainly can't inspire a guy like Yant to get better. Fix that.

Good summary. I grew up in Nebraska and will always be a Cornhusker fan. However, I, getting really close to 85 years old and would like to see at least one more conference championship. The last 20 yeas have been as bad as the 1940s and 1950s.

Yeah, but in the 40s you were still picking your nose and eating it. How big of a fan could you have been when you had that going for you? :-)

If you were a fan of the Huskers back when we played Stanford in the Rose Bowl back in January 1, 1941, boy did YOU have it rough!!!!

You had to patiently wait through 22 years of bad football until Bob Devaney came to town and reestablished our once-proud program.

As a reality check for the rest of us 'young folks,' it's been since January 3, 2002 -- nearly 21 years -- since we last played for a National Championship in the Rose Bowl.
