If Nebraska isn't already dealing with the same issue they will in the future

TCU coach Gary Patterson says SEC schools targeting player on his roster with NIL offers

Patterson goes on to say that schools are targeting one of his freshman that's currently on the roster. Patterson did not name the player.

"There’s five SEC schools calling him and telling him, ‘Here’s what we’ll give you if you come here and not stay at TCU,’” Patterson said to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. “At the end of the day, that’s just real life. If we don’t do anything about it, within a year we lose him.“The rules have changed. There is no wrong anymore.”

"We planted the trees. Now we have to water ‘em,” Patterson said. “I hear, ‘Well, I don’t want to get dirty. It feels dirty. I don’t know the rules.’ Let me just say, you guys know me, I’m just going to tell the truth — the bottom line to it is I can lose 25-30 guys on scholarships by January.

$EC was always going to be the worst offender on the NIL stuff - I would assume the school contacting the player on another team is still illegal. But if a car dealer near another school decides to call a player and offer $$$$$$$$$ - there is no rule against that. The question is how coordinated is that effort? The school has to have some idea of what is going on. The car dealer going after a player the coaches don't want.........unlikely. Point being there has to be some behind the scenes coordination going - what is the NCAA doing about that?

Me doing my best Captain Renalt impression from the Bogart film, Casablanca:

I'm SHOCKED!!! SEC schools bribing players at other schools with NIL offers??? SHOCKED I TELL YOU!!!

As I said earlier this season, enjoy it. Because it will become an unrecognizable hellscape (college football). What we've grown up to know and love is dying.

I totally agree. This is just the beginning. Wait until the high roller boosters really get involved. I don’t think there is a single facet of the game that will not be affected soon. From recruiting to coaching to keeping the players minds into the game and not thinking of the next possible payday. This will get really messy soon I suspect.

The transfer portal plus NIL money pretty much means all NCAA rules have been thrown out of the window. Why even both with recruiting rules? Are they really going to bust a coach for contacting a player during a "dead period" while the same coach can offer the recruit a million dollars in sponsorship money?

This shows how far off from reality the SCOTUS is. I expect that the kids we want most are only interested in the money they can get and I doubt they can put the genie back in the bottle

Depends on where that coach is the coach. SEC? No problem. Nebraska, Boise St, New Mexico....scholarship reduction and probation.

I dunno. This whole NIL business sucks and is probably going to ruin the sport...

BUT

It's ridiculous for the NCAA to talk about preserving the 'nobleness' of the amateur student athlete while its coaches, administrators and schools were raking in millions of dollars each year.

The genie was let out of the bottle long ago.

The kids are going to make more than the coaches, hide and watch.

This NIL issue really does highlight the biggest problem in America right now: extremism.

What I mean is, we could have developed a system where players were paid, but still kept it reasonable and able to be regulated. We could have just said players can receive an extra 2,000 a month stipend from the school on top of their scholarship and whatever else financial aid they were receiving. Instead we got this all or nothing system that is going to ruin college football entirely.

Free market... It's about freedom... get what you can, when you can... hard edged capitalism...

Eat what you kill folks...

NU just signed a deal with Brandr - so now kids can sign NIL deal with the power of NU co-branding. And NU talks about anting to be a leader in enabling NIL... so we are fully into this mess, enabling it.

Glad you can recognize that as a problem.

You like that I can recognize it as a problem--which it is.

But methinks you'd hate my other thoughts on where 95% of it comes from and what we should do about it. Can't say anything more here about this due to rules of the board.
