The portal

So with Nebraska's incoming recruiting class and Transfer Portal acquisitions, how many more current players on the roster need to leave?

Apparently he wasn't down with having to compete for his position. The new DB coach doesn't know most of these guys and has said there will be open try outs and he wanted a guarantee he'd make the cut for the 105 man roster. They wouldn't guarantee that so he went back to AZ. He never signed his paperwork a couple weeks ago.

They must not be happy at all with our DB’s , we have like what 30 on the team

I don't think the DBs were the problem, it was more scheme. For example, so often Nebraska's defense would get their opponent into 3 & 6, 3 & 7 and our DBs would be 8 yards off the line of scrimmage. Ball is snapped, our DBs are back-pedaling and that huge cushion makes for an easy pitch and catch for a 1st down. What I'd like to see next year is our secondary in press coverage. Now we can still mix in zone with the press look, but having DBs closer to the line of scrimmage makes it easier to take away those short quick throws--or at minimum be in a position to contest the catch.

I'm not real high on the 4 year/4 school guys anyhow. Maybe I'm crazy but it doesn't scream "Commitment to Excellence." No hard feelings towards MGK but it's fair to question his decision making when he travels more than LeBron and Gulliver.

Unfortunately I think that 4 schools/4 years is going to become more the rule than the exception. Or at least the 2/3 schools/4 years way.

Can't get attached to players anymore because they could be gone after 1 year.

Quick comment on Butler's approach to defense. He clearly is willing to dial up pressure - not sure why White dialed that back this season but it might be he didn't trust our backend end to hold up in man so we played zone and off coverage quite a bit and that limited what he could call for blitzes. I am sure we are ramping up expectations for DBs to allow more blitzes - so competing for jobs is part of that.

The part in red seems like a reasonable assumption for me.

Don't get me wrong, I was a Tony White fan. But I was more of a fan in 2023 than I was in 2024. I liked what I saw from Butler's D in the bowl game. I've always been a big fan of pressure. That's what orginally made me a fan of Bo Pelini as our DC.

Yes, it's a gamble. But I believe you force more mistakes with that aggressive approach than you give up on the back end. Last weekend, I absolutely loved the pressure that KC's DC, Karlaftis brought against the Texans' QB Stroud.
