Banker elaborated a bit on his postgame comment about Iowa practices....

“I was giving Iowa credit,” Banker said. “I was complimenting the opponent.”

But Banker said he wasn’t drawing a comparison to Nebraska’s practices. NU, he said, practices hard.

“We play in practice,” Banker said. “We don’t have these tag-off, underwear practices. It wasn’t until the last couple weeks — when we were pretty beat up — that we had to slow some things down a little bit, take some reps out of practice, but it was still good run fits and all that.”

I just could not resist this chance....I am telling you if your a Nebraska football person, future, current or former player and you don't get fired up or like Coach Banker then there is just something in you not quite wired right period.
Yeah sometimes his thoughts get tangled up I his brain maybe and what he really wants to say comes off wrong but if you have the chance to visit or listen to this man in person and don't come away smiling and all fired up....you better check your pulse cause you might be dead !
I have 110% faith in him and his future plans for the Blackshirts of Nebraska....not only does this guy get the whole Blackshirt ideal and traditions I honestly think deep in side him if you could ever get him to say it in public or out loud even....he has wanted his whole coaching career to be the leader of a group like this with a National level Reputation and I firmly believe he is the right guy at the right time to make it happen.

Of course as always just my opinion,

Doc.

I just could not resist this chance,

If you are a Casual Husker Fan....a Husker Fanatic....or just a Football Person.......if your a future, current or former player and you gave a chance to spend a few minutes of your time visiting with or listening to Coach Banker and you don't walk away with a smile on your face....or completely fired up.......then you had better check your pulse ! .....you might be dead!

Seriously I have 110% faith that Coach Banker is the right guy at the precise time for the Husker Defense.
I also would be willing to bet good hard cash that if you could get him to admit it he has wanted his whole Coaching Career to lead a group like the Blackshirts,. One that has a national reputation among major College Football and without A single solitary doubt I know he is the right man for this job.

Well I'm glad that you're confident in his abilities. I for one, have been very hesitant in believing he was a capable choice for Defensive Coordinator.

I'm willing to let it play out though. There were times this year when defensive players were in position to make a big stop, but whiffed. I chalk that up to having a lack of talent. If the D is in the right place and the right time to make the play, then that tells me the scheme is correct. The D Line has been arguably one of the most depleted units NU has seen in a while. Yet they still had a pretty solid season. The secondary made a tremendous jump from last year. I think LB play improved, but certainly isn't where it should be. There are certainly encouraging signs with the Defense. However I'm still tentative on Banker.

I'm skeptical of Banker as well, but am willing to give him time to see what he can do. I know Ore St fans wanted him gone on more than one occasion, but I also know that he put together a decent statistical defense here and there, and also didn't have much to work with, plus they played some pretty high powered offenses in a conference that often is considered defense-optional (although Big 12 seems to have taken over that moniker big time nowadays)

he runs a defensive scheme similar to what MSU does, but like any defense, it requires athletes to make it work.

I am encouraged by the changes he made in the offseason to take over safeties himself and let Stew focus on CBs, and that he incorporated more zone coverage into his base/core schemes to take advantage of the talents/comfort level of the players that he had

I thought the defense did well the first 50-75% of the season and then got worn down due to lack of depth and talent. having basically 3 new full time starters on the DL didn't help either

we've all seen different defensive schemes and how different they can be on the field year to year depending on the talent available that year. defenses that were top 10 one year can turn to **** a few years later once their top talent graduates.

they made improvements in big plays given up and for the most part other things were improved as well. just like the offense, I think Banker needs time to get his system implemented and the types of athletes he wants to run it. tough to pass judgement after year 2

but I do like his interviews. sometimes he seems like he has early onset dementia or something, but most of the time he's just shooting from the hip and not really filtering his comments, which usually makes for some nice quotes/sound bites. lol

The D needs some bad Mofo's again. I think the scheme is OK. I'd prefer more press coverage but he likes to challenge at the top of the route. Whatever, we need some talented very nasty people playing again.

Yes we do.

There is only one way to play defensive coverage and that is 60 minutes of punishment. The opponent needs to know every minute was a full workout. And you do that with a rotation

^ If your defense is on the field for 60 minutes, you have done something wrong. :P
