^^^^ Regarding Neb99's post, you want as many recruits possible when you can show them a truly unique game day experience. You wanna milk that baby for all it's worth.
Back in the day, recruits were 'wow'ed' by a stadium full of red and white -- until all college teams started doing it. Then we had the HuskerVision camera coverage of the tunnel walk -- until all college teams started doing some version of it. We were one of the first to come out to a rock piece when we followed the Chicago Bull's dramatic opening by using Sirius -- until everybody else followed suit with their own rock choice.
When Penn State successfully pulled off its first "Whiteout" game, I thought that was really unique--and impressive. But while a BLACKOUT game doesn't have the same visual vibe, I was genuinely surprised by the emotional impact a Blackout game packs, especially during a night game.
While it's natural for an old curmudgeon like me to automatically call it 'gimmicky,' the Blackshirts label is another uniquely Nebraska CFB tradition. Nebraska is the only college team with an official nickname for its defense. Yes, over the years, other teams have given their defenses nicknames but those were specific to a particular time with a particular group of guys. No other program has one that has been around for well over SIXTY years -- and has its own skull and crossbones logo.
So if any program can lay claim to a BLACKOUT game, it's Nebraska. The stage is set for a special night.
