Sunday Morning Thoughts - Post Indiana

I agree with this because Colandrea is the X Factor. We have upgraded the QB position immensely with him at the controls. What I know for sure about this year's Huskers is that we are the best team in the MAC, and we are better than at least 4 teams in the B1G (Maryland, Rutgers, Michigan St, and probably Illinois). We are going to have to let the season play out to determine whether Nebraska is the 8th or 14th best team in the league. Unfortunately, it appears UCLA in Y1 of the Chesney Era has already leap-frogged Nebraska. Eight wins is still quite doable, but six may be more probable, if they can beat Rutgers on their second consecutive road trip.

But it isn't just Colandrea. The defense held Indiana's number 1 rushing offense in the B1G to 65 yards. They did that without RVP playing. I think they're going to surprise you late Saturday night in Eugene HJ, despite Coach Matt doing Coach Matt things.

Oh, I think we have a pattern, Uenth. Nebraska has lost 31 games in a row to ranked opponents and is 0-11 under Coach Matt. Coincidentally, Matt is 2-26 against ranked opponents in his 10-year college coaching career. We definitely have a pattern, or two, or three.
Trying not to dwell on those old stats and hoping that we'll break most of them this year.

I get all that, speen. There are numerous metrics to suggest this team is different, but I still think it was all circumstantial. Doc Fum described it better than I ever could. It was the perfect trap game to restore order, and still the Huskers found a way to blow it.

Believe me, I want nothing more than this entire board calling me out Sunday morning with "Yeah, let's see if Hunch will show his face after this performance!" I seriously have my doubts.

I'm really starting to like our chances against Washington. Talk about an underachieving team right now!

This is why I decided to approach this season with little to no exceptions. Except that after starting 5-0, I was starting to drink the kool-aid. I was hopeful we could keep it together second half, at least enough to walk away with the "W" but the wheels fell off that train big time.

I hope we get a "W" quick as it seems to be a pattern to lose a game that was within grasp and have the rest of the season pretty much wind up in the crapper. Don't mean to be horribly pessimistic but, as Hunchie posted above, we've seen this scenario play out too man times before.

It will be interesting to see what plays out in Eugene next week. At least I have no strong feelings of impending doom or anything yet. Just nothing one way or another. I'd like to be able to keep it that way..

Hunchie and Doc Pretty much summed up my thoughts. I actually felt good about our chances going in. When I woke up in the wee hours here in Thailand and checked the score, I almost believed we had it in the bag.

the recruiting is there, but the coaching isn’t, and the game management has been a glaring issue from the start. I don’t believe anymore. Period. This is a league full of great coaching, and we won’t arrive until we are at the upper level in that department.

not there yet. Go Big Red.

Rhule has a coaching resume very short of ranked wins - not just at Nebraska. If he doesn't get one this season......I'll be concerned but I think the trend is in the right direction based on 6 games played.

The not beating ranked teams bugaboo goes back to the prior 2 coaches - which reflects on the program overall. Think of Nebraska football as a broken down car when Rhule arrived. He's got the jalopy running again but there is still work to be done to get it back to a daily driver.

Dana needs to continue to get him to settle down and really see what's available. He's our excitable boy.

For all the complaints about the busts on defense (not invalid), this was what burned me the most. Jay Moore called it out too. Holgorsen called a perfectly fine game, Colandrea blew it on multiple plays that would have moved the chains, burned more clock and very likely led to more points. If every single QB didn't watch Tom Brady dump the ball off constantly to keep drives alive and think "oh, the check down is my friend", they shouldn't be playing QB

IMO AC is at his best when he's freestylin'. Straight drop backs are not his forte. That was my complaint with Holgerson's play calling. Put him on the move and let hm create. I do agree - and have said this before - that he needs to look at the underneath option more, and the occasional touch pass is your friend; not every pass needs to be a bullet.

They have called plays that put him on the move prior to IU and largely they operated that way in the first half. IU changed something on D that kept him in the pocket - I think it was more about IU's D than Dana's play calling. That said - plays were there to made - and AC became less sharp as the game wore on. IMO - the hits he was taking took a toll and effected how he finished the game.
That's football - McBride's D lived on beating the hell out of opposing QBs so they worried more about the next shot than executing the play correctly.

They went to just a 3 man rush and had guys just sit back and contain him. It worked pretty well so Dana needs to figure out how to counter that because other will take notice.

17 points normally isn't enough to win a B1G game. It could have been vs. IU if we don't give up two back breaking long pass TDs. Win as a team. Lose as a team.
Yeah, there is no one person who lost the game. It was definitely a team effort. Disappointing to me because they just needed to march down the field, burning the clock. At least get a field goal and we would have been good. Not how it played out. Time for coaches, team and fans to turn to Oregon's game. I'm sure Rhule has been working with the team steadily all week. Weeks like this I surely don't envy Rhule for his position.

Hs height may be causing some difficulty spotting underneath routes, When the defense has to focus on run first the linemen take a lower pad level. When they are attacking against the pass they come in straighter and try to block passes, Harder to see through the forest.
