State of the Program - Post Iowa Thoughts

Remember 2 of our preseason opponents were TRUE CREAM PUFFS
Yep, those two were pretty much JUCO level teams. I would find it hard to label this season as being a success.
I remember three of our four non-con opponents being cream puffs---and four or more of our conference opponents being push-overs. That 's seven guaranteed wins pretty much every season regardless of how good we were.

Under Rhule, we are 2-10 When the Gales of November Come Early ( see Gordon Lightfoot). It’s so disappointing to see us regress, to me that’s on the coaching staff. Once we found some early success in the season and a top 25 ranking, we just disappeared. I can’t figure out what’s in the water here. Teams like Iowa always seem struggle early in the season, even against mediocre teams. No one wants to play them by season’s end. We need to petition the B1G to schedule Iowa early in the season

I'm assuming you are referring to Osborne in the old Big 8 days. Even still Osborne managed to win 10-11 games per year. The last two seasons under Rhule we have had 7 guaranteed victories with the powderpuff schedule and that is exactly how many games we won. Rhule has yet to exceed the rock bottom lowest standard.

No kidding, we are really a 5 and 7 team and with a little luck by our opposition we could be a 3 and 9 team. We beat no top 25 team. Just facts. Probably more than what Im thinking at the moment.

Look at the program Osborne inherited from the Bobfather and look at the program Rhule inherited post-Bo's firey departure, Riley, and Frost.

* I hate Iowa, but I do admire their Defense, especially their DC, Phil Parker. Honestly, I feel that they have the same type of athletes we have. The big difference is that he has been around for ages. He knows exactly the type of athlete he needs who fits his system and the mindset they possess. They are highly disciplined, very few penalties. They have been playing great D for decades. More importantly they play as a cohesive unit. We forget that Tom Osborne was blessed with a DC’s who have been around and get players to fit and believe in their system. It’s called consistency and continuity. We have had a revolving door of DC’s over the past 20 years.

Nebraska is in a bad way right now period. Somewhere along the line they have lost all sense of their identity. Go back to a tough boring O and D recruit to it practice the heck out of it and be the best at it and it will work. I like the coach from army if we ever switch

We suck on most parts of the game. The only coach worth his salt is Ekeler

Sorry, KR, but I doubt becoming Mad Bo would have accomplished anything positive.
THIS I agree with!

That’s exactly what happened back in 1978 when Nebraska’s John Ruud slobberknockered OU’s Kelly Phelps and fumbled the ball which the Huskers recovered. The officials said Phelps was down and gave OU the ball back. Osborne gathered the team around him and said basically what you said — with the expletives removed. :)
I was going to say, no way TO cursed. Maybe Dadgummit at the most. Rotfl.

Rhule has always had quick success then moved on with the exception of his time in the NFL. Does the last week of his odd pressers actually mean he's got something else cooking? Or is it simply he realizes he is in over his head on how to take the next step. I think it is option 2. Best way to make the next step is not being afraid to make coaching changes - in particular guys that can recruit. I think Rhule will make changes. 50/50 he gets those changes right. The schedule next season is going to expose any lack of progress from this season.

There's a reason Saban was so successful. I can't even keep track how many OCs they went through and they didn't seem to miss a beat. His attitude is if you ain't cutting it as a coach, you gotta go.

Fumble I think our 7-5 record would be far different if we had either beaten Iowa to become 7-5 or lost another close one to end up 7-5. After yesterday's game this 7-5 showed almost no progress IMO. The only saving grace was EJs 217 yard rushing game. And as far as I can find, this is the 1st time Nebraska had a 200+ yard rusher and lose since before I was born. Another record ended. Also they reported on the news that this is the 7th time in a row Ferentz has beaten us at home. He bypassed Bud Wilkinsons 6 times in a row. The Gut punches just keep on coming. :(
You must not be very old. Calvin Jones did way over 200 against Kansas as a freshmen and Roy Helu went over 300 vs Mizzu.

Reread my post. I said it hasn't happened and then we lose a game. We won those games against Kansas and Misery. Spleen pointed out Rick Burns in 78 did rush for over 200 yards in a loss.

Sorry Doc, but I disagree with your disagreement. My statement was sorta for effect, but I sure would have liked to see more emption than I saw. And frankly, at that point, what harm could it have done? 15 yards? So what; Iowa scored anyway.

Sorry; don't know where the attached files thing came from, why it's there or how to make it go away.
