Serious about changing Sirius

We started the TW with Sirius because it resonated with recruits and the kids of that generation. MJ and Bulls had been using it for awhile and they were in the middle of a pretty historic run. We "stole" the song and it helped. Now it's just stale and outdated. Other teams (VT comes to mind) have done it much better and the song doesn't resonate as much with the recruits of this generation. And quite frankly, the TW the last 6-8 years has been ho-hum at best. I've seen much better videos on Youtube that I would have preferred over the TW that was playing in the stadium. I think it's time that it gets an upgrade. Something that resonates with the recruits and the next generation of players we will be looking to see in Lincoln. There's plenty of music out there by artists such as JCole or Kendrick Lamar (but please God not Kanye) that can be looped and get the younger fans and the recruits hyped and still have a beat that the older generation can pattycake too. And with that, hopefully we can see/hear better clips on the ol' Huskervision. Lastly, as much as I love the 'Husker Prayer' I'd much prefer that to be kept in the locker room instead of 90,000+ trying to do it with the players, it becomes a jumbled mess. Just cut that part off and have it start once the players hit the carpet and give the fans the high fives or once they actually get to the gates.

IMO Sirius doesnt rise quite to that level of tradition. Sirius is TV screens, multimedia, etc. It probably needs to evolve. But as I said earlier it should be focused on the fan experience.

Nobody’s suggested this: pay to develop a new version. A remix that’s higher energy and more relevant. I don’t know how much they pay for the rights to Sirius but for $50-100k they could hire out somebody to redesign it.

Yes, it's a different era--but so what? I would argue that one of the things that separates college football and makes it special from other American sports is its time-honored traditions. Show me something we've allowed to change (i.e. discontinuation of the Nebraska-Oklahoma and the Texas-Texas A&M rivalries) and I'll argue the overall sport lost a heck of a lot of passion, color, and excitement.

Now I'm not here to equate our Tunnel Walk music with the NU-OU rivalry, but the question remains: WHY CHANGE? What is the value added and what is the value lost?

Are we to believe a change of music will get us MORE pumped up? Is that possible? If the Tunnel Walk has gotten ho-hum in recent years, I would argue that it has a heck of a lot more to do with the product on the field and a head coach unwilling (for some strange reason) to lead the team out of the locker room than it did about the music itself.

There is a reason why our pregame marching band music hasn't changed since I was a kid. Again, we've added to the tradition but there wasn't talk we needed a "better" fight song than, Hail Varsity.(My recollection is that we added the 'March of the Cornhusker' to the list in the mid-70s and 'March Grandioso' in the early 80s.) Nebraska Football is a family affair and the pregame rituals are one tangible way that we emotionally connect generation to generation.

In college football, the talk should never be about replacing traditions, It should be all about adding to our existing traditions. Old traditions remain but each generation usually adds its own (i.e. students waving one shoe in the air before kick-off---don't ask me how that started or what that's all about, but it's a tradition now.)

In our increasingly throw-away society, there's something reassuring about knowing what we'll see and hear when we enter Memorial Stadium for a Husker football game.

Under no circumstances should this be left to the players. Sorry, but I really don't want to watch the players coming out on the field to Drake or Lil Wayne.

In short, if I can't lift weights to it, it's not worthy.

Here's my offering if anyone from HuskerVision is listening:

The black Memorial Stadium screens suddenly show a 12-second clip from Top Gun with fighter pilots, Maverick and Goose, heading to their plane.
Marverick: I feel the need...
Marverick and Goose: The need for SPEED! (they slap hands) YEOGH!!!

The clip ends and the big screen begins flashing red and the goosebump-producing sounds of SIRIUS blare out of the loudspeakers as...

We see a graphic of fighter planes from Offut AFB blazing across the screen with a loud WHOOOOOOOSH...then shots of the planes roaring by Carhenge (causing the car wheels to spin)....through the Kearney Arch with the Arch shaking and the flags rippling...past a pack of hard-charging Cheetas at the Henry Doorly Zoo....and then soaring around the State Capital causing the sower to spin around like a top....before dropping into Memorial Stadium ... and with another loud WHOOOOOOOOOSH through the Tunnel Walk gates past the red carpet to.....

fade to a live shot of Frost and the team walking out of the locker room.

Book it, Dano! :CORN:

Doc--you have waaay too much time on your hands ;)

GBR

Count me in for ditching it. I honestly have never been a big fan of the song.

I would love for the team to come out to something like Thunderstruck, For Whom the Bell Tolls, or Wherever I May Roam.

When I hear those last two songs, I am immediately ready to run through a brick wall.

I would not change it. I think it has lost some luster in people's minds because the team has been running out of the tunnel and playing crappy more often than we could take. If the football quality improves as we all think it will then the intro song will regain its meaning.

Maybe we all have too much time on our hands;), but I'm going to join in as well.

I have a few thoughts on the subject......

a) The music doesn't excite the players......the crowd does . So whatever excites the crowd will excite the players. Imo you can play Sirius all day long in the opponents stadiums (or any other song for that matter) and it won't mean much. The players need to come out to 90,000 screaming fans cheering them on........... so whatever it takes whip up the crowd is OK with me.

b) Imo in order to build the fans into a frenzy you need crescendo. I don't care if it's Sirius, Beethoven's fifth, or Disturbed singing Sounds of Silence.........you need expectation. I'll borrow a line from Alfred Hitchcock........."The bang doesn't create terror......anticipation does." So it is with the crowd waiting for their hero's entrance....build anticipation, and then spring the team onto the field while amping the volume......for a moment the players will feel invincible, and the electric charge in the stadium can be resurrected during opportune times.

c) I agree with sho, the Prayer is best kept intimate. It is a personal plea with a higher power to help them do their best. The walk is great for everyone.....the prayer is for the players. It should be passionate........but a team endeavor.

rooskie I don't know if your imagination is drug induced and I don't care... this was both hilarious and bad@$$ at the same time.
