Post-Portal Season: Where do we Stand?

I'm not feeling great overall. We are relying on guys we kept on the roster contributing quite a bit over anything else. Recruiting was essentially nothing relative to 2026 and portal adds will help - especially QB + Oline - but nothing that moves the needle much otherwise. This feels like a team that will be mediocre next season. Against our schedule 7 wins would be excellent. Right now we'll be lucky to get 5 wins based on what we know now. Development can change that. QB play can change that. Our new DC and staff can change that. I'm not sure if Rhule's problem is he doesn't realize what he's up against in the B1G or he's really constrained by the financial reality that we are more of a Top 40 program (even if we are valued in the Top 10) - in part because we actually follow fiscal responsibility when other programs are borrowing anything they can and looking for sugar daddies to pump up their NIL pool (Cuban - IU, Campbell - Texas Tech, Knight - Oregon...etc.)

QB - 2 good additions and 1 potential difference maker for next year
OL - 3 potential starters acquired with size so job well done there
DT - we missed on the biggest need for the D, size and experience at D tackle. Yes we got the 6th year mediocre guy from Boston College and the 270 lb guy from Pitt. I can't be anything but disappointed and skeptical. They now HAVE to land the 2026 late recruit Dylan Berymon and hope that Tyson Terry and Malcom Simpson can contribute. Will RVP emerge as a 3 technique? Not a good place to be in.
DE - They were already OK here with the switch to an even front and added depth.
LB - A couple of additions that don't jump off the screen. Wait and see.
WR - The guy from UCLA adds depth. Hanging onto Hunter was big. Maybe Barney can finally stop being tackled by a touch or soft breeze.
CB & S - I like the addition of an experienced safety from SDSU. Getting Marshall to stay was big. Lots of bodies so have to hope they get coached up.
RB - TOTAL FAILURE. It is as of now 6:10 ET on January 20th and no word on Char Mar Brown entering the portal. I can not believe that they think they can run it back with just the guys they have in the RB room. I didn't even hear of any potential interest in a portal RB let alone a visit. Dumbfounding.
Didn't the portal close on the 16th?

I'm not predicting he's headed to Lincoln---BUT---

1) We courted him HARD last year; and

2) I may be wrong, but it didn't appear to me like we sniffed around at anybody this year. ....maybe there was a reason...

I personally don't think we need a RB in this portal class, but if we're going to sign one, this young man from Miami or Justice Hayes (?Haynes?) from Michigan--I'd be really happy with either one.

That was my line too, 99. And it explained (at least in my mind) why we weren't seeing any RB portal action.

And I'm still happy with what we're bringing back--BUT, like you, I wouldn't whine if we picked up the Miami guy. :)

I don't know how or why you're blaming the Judiciary for this. This is pure capitalism at it's absolute worst or best depending on your point of view.
Court rulings have led to this mess In Sam Keller vs the NCAA world and anyone with deep pockets and lighting the NIL fuse

As someone who has a Journalism degree from DONU, I took a class my senior year, it was J486 (or something like it) more commonly known as Communication Law.

I'll spare you the encyclopedia version and instead give you the TL;DR (to long ; didn't read) version: In the case of Carson v. Here’s Johnny Portable Toilets, Inc.

A company used the phrase "Here's Johnny" because they knew the phrase was widely known. They profited financially off of Johnny Carson's celebrity and Carson sued and won. In it's ruling, the court acknowledged:

Here’s Johnny Portable Toilets, Inc. appropriated Carson’s identity, entitling Carson to judgment.

When the athletes you mentioned sued the NCAA for using their name, image, and likeness without giving them financial compensation, whether we like it or not, the court was just upholding precedent. Meaning, the court, way back in the late 1970's recognized that a person's name, image, likeness, and even catchphrase, has economic value.

To my larger point, it wasn't the court's ruling that has caused this mess in college football; rather it is the insatiable greed of people mixed with run amuck capitalism that has caused this fiasco.

I look at the NIL fiasco like this:

College Athletics were amateur sports. Definition of amateur: noun: a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid rather than a professional basis. adjective: engaging or engaged in without payment; nonprofessional.

With that definition and the understanding that by playing amateur college athletics they would fall under that category, how could the athletes think they should be paid? They agreed to accept a scholarship on the basis of amateur status...unpaid. Just because they (Keller) failed to make it as a professional athlete, he, as well as others, decided they would pursue the new American Dream, sue til you're rich.

Voila, we now have the bs that is college "amateur sports."

A scholarship, apparel, meals via the training table, access to doctors for care/injury prevention or treatment, and/or access to weight room and other facilities--these are all forms of payment which, under strict adherence to your definition of unpaid amateurs, means that before NIL, the way college athletics was set up violated the "amateur" status. That, and the fact that regarding college football, everyone EXCEPT the athletes were getting rich; and they were getting rich off of the athletes' work. NIL just said players are entitled to a piece of that monetary pie. Not arguing against you, just pointing out that even before NIL, athletes were getting paid.

If you look back at the history of college football, athletes have always been paid.

George Flippin, our very first Nebraska football star left Nebraska in 1898 to pursue a medical degree in Chicago. Oh, and by the way, he played football there too--for $75 a season which helped pay for his education.
