To me this appears to be the biggest problem right now. I don’t see a fix this year and, frankly, I don’t see how they can fix it for at least two more years.

Recruiting to a physical body type was myopic.

You have to recruit and develop them. You don’t see many good OL candidates in the transfer portal. Says something about personality types.

can anyone see anything that Riola has done? He really got handed a crappy hand to play.

can they call a different offensive set to minimize the exposure?

As the Originator, the Innovator, truly. the Architect of all that is football- Let me offer a solution.
The DOG EYE.
It's a two tightend formation with a single receiver split away on either side.
Behind the center in a straight line is the QB, behind the QB is the TOTAL back, and behind him is the frumious bandersnatch. We'll just call him H.
Having tight ends on the outside that can catch the DEs trying to circumvent the blocking, allows us to have 5 interior lineman. None of them will have to do their poor imitation of a dancing bear trying to keep DEs out of our backfield.
This puts 7 solid bodies on the line for run blocking. Almost 2000 lbs of roadgrader's not enough? Add the TOTAL back to widen the hole and lead the way for the Frumious Bander- er, H back. Or surprise them with the TOTAL back on a quick hit. Or you could do the old triple option thing (boring).
Let's say the defense loads up the box to try and stop this onslaught of flesh from being successful. That WR and one of the Tight Ends could go out on a pass route. Total back stays in to block and H goes out for a pass also. Between Palmer, Vokolak, and Mr. H, someone should be open. And if they're not, you could throw a jump ball to either Vokolak or Palmer, Whoever has one on one coverage.
It's important not to substitute during a series. Defense won't sub unless they use a timeout, so whatever they try to position their players, we can attack their weakness.
This system turns our lack of depth into a strength. We have no one to substitute with so we get even by not letting them substitute.

That was easy. Ask for help on defense and I'll explain my 5-1-5 Manster defense that's PERFECT for a team low on LBs and needs 5 linemen to slow down the run.

Blocking is attitude mixed with anger finished with technique. It is not brain surgery or rocket science. The previous staff did not believe in physical football and the team suffered from it. If Illinois can go from a train wreck to tops in the west in 1 1/2 seasons with line play, that should tell you something. MJ is working on it but will need an influx of linemen to weed out the weak.

I believe a common misperception precludes a true understanding of the problem. I don't believe we have an Oline problem....we have an O TACKLE problem. Interior linemen rely MUCH less on their mobility and footwork than tackles. Benhart ain't a bad guard-just a horrible Tackle. We don't have ANYONE who has the skills(at this moment) to play tackle. We don't have an Oline problem, we have a TACKLE problem.

Here's the thing:
You line up with a center, two guards, two tackles, two tight ends. A split back to both sides to occupy some d-backs. Then you got your qb, in a modulated wishbone. The fullback is a pure blocker. Behind him are two backs, one a wing back type, the other a standard NU I-back from the old days.
I swear it would work.

Not quite as sure as you on this one, but we need to come up with something fast, or we don’t have much of a chance against Illinois.

A much simpler fix would be two all-conference tackles, but that ain’t commin’ this year.

Just a variation on my DOG EYE scheme. Next you'll tell me the ground game will work with your system.

Why is it bad? I think it comes down to 2 factors - made worse bad coaching/leadership...etc.
1. Too many Janes (look like Tarzan...play like)
2. S&C sucks no matter what Frost and staff said to this point and it was WORSE under Riley.

You can recruit/transfer in the right bodies. S&C is THE KEY thing the new Head Coach needs to fix....along with at least 10 to 12 other key things that need to be fixed immediately

Here comes Ohio Husker's Uncle Rico moment.

I played on a really, really good D1 Ohio football team. Lost in the state semis in overtime. Which still pisses me off.

Played next to a 4 year starter for Purdue, and a 3 year starter for Brown. Me, I decided to wrassel in college instead of football, but could have played as well.

And I'm telling you right now that at 210 pounds I could do a better job of blocking at 17 years old than #77.

I wrote my first post off the cuff trying to be humorous. Oh well.
On a serious note, MRJFB's post convinced me we weren't actually far off. If our tackles aren't mobile enough to pick up the DEs, let the TEs handle them. Tight ends are still taught blocking, right? Instead of keeping an RB back to block, just have 2 tight ends. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of that in 10 days

Let me ask a question. Does anyone think that a 3 or 4 star athlete now days is willing to wait until they are a junior or senior before they start? Redshirt, get coached and developed through S&C and then start when they are a junior at the earliest?

It depends on the position they play.

Skill players want to play right away. Especially running backs and wide receivers

Offensive linemen will wait. Same with defensive linemen

that’s why it will take time (years) to fix the hole that Frost dug by recruiting to body type

6’9”!linemen have a broad reach but have difficulty with foot speed and leverage[/QUOTE]

The o line sucks the o line coach is a graduate assistant wannabe and he also sucks.

No modern athlete is willing to wait, get coached and developed over 2 or 3 years before they play. Offensive or defensive line or most any other position. Especially now with the ease of transferring. It’s killing the sport and ultimately is why a school like Nebraska will not be relevant again for years.
