NIL.

If I ever win one of those 1 billion Powerball lotteries, Nebraska football has at least 500 million coming their way for NIL usage.

If The Boys in the Boat can round up $5k in a week back in 1936 why can't the Huskers scrape up another $20 million to field a competitive team 90 years later?
Maybe because the big money donors are tired of ponying up big $$$'s and seeing less than stellar results. Don't mean to sound like I'm dogging the team as I'm not but if I had payed out as much as these guys have in buyouts, I might not be so willing to pony up any more money without seeing some tangible results.

Good answer, but I really just wanted to reference The Boys in the Boat. I'm perdy much through with college football and basketball and the Money Race it has become. There is no longer an equal playing field in college athletics. My comment was more a mockery of the current state of affairs than anything else. I've had enough.

I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, it's getting harder and harder to be a fan with all of the money crap but I have so many fond memories of the good years that I keep hanging on by my fingernails.

I suspect that there is more than just a kernel of truth to this. Smaller schools can't compete and will be squeezed out. It may take more than a year or two but won't take that long.

And for those of you wondering, this *could* affect Nebraska. Yes our athletic department is self-contained and operates in the black, meaning it makes more money than it spends. However, as NIL keeps going up, cost of travel keeps going up, realistically, how much more can Nebraska spend to stay in this arms race? Nebraska has Warren Buffet who could be our billionaire sugar daddy the way Mark Cuban is for Indiana, but Buffet doesn't give two hoots about Nebraska football.

So again, I ask, realistically, can Nebraska keep up in this ever escalating "arms" race?

There never was an "equal playing field."

Edit: There has never been an equal playing field for anything or anyone in the entire history of humanity.

True, but in college athletics we used to pretend all programs were on a level playing field. Now, one can look at the pre-season payroll of Team A at 40 million US dollars and Team B at 10 million US dollars with the understanding that Team A may have a slight advantage.

Well, as long as it's a slight disadvantage...
