Shatel: How much difference can a new defensive scheme …
https://omaha.com › college › huskers › teams › football

Coach McBride was not above asking friends for help...…….he reached out to FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews for help...…….it worked.

Charlie called it a 4-3, but as mentioned he was excited when Riley was going to a 3-4.

One difference is you really need a bruiser at NT. He's filling in for two interior DT's

Oh yeah, I think it was SUHnami that pointed out there are many reasons for teams to go to a 3-4, but in the NFL one reason is that it easier, and cheaper, to get one NT than two DTs, but getting that one can sometimes be challenging.

You also need linebackers that don't mind sticking their nose in there and getting some hits

Indeed. NT's aren't the only one to fill in for that missing DT. You need some "second level" guys to fill in too.

You realize what a 4-3 flex front is? One side has A & C gaps shaded and opposite side has B and C. It takes studs. Your 3-4 runs quite a few front alignments that result in the look. McBride was mistakenly attributed by sportswriters as running a 4-3 defense.

When a D end dropped in coverage it was a 'spy', the predecessor to zone blitz schemes.

'94 flashback: Ed Stewart was the master at the blitz | Husker football 2014 | journalstar.com

"We put in the dime defense in 1991, and by 1993 it was pretty good,” Stewart said. “By 1994, other offenses had no idea where our blitzes were coming from and we had a blast. I was having fun, because I had come to Nebraska as a defensive back, about 190 (pounds), and I felt a lot more comfortable in pass coverages and in blitzes than I did as a linebacker in the standard 4-3 defense."

guess Ed Stewart was mistaken 2

and as an old guy , we ran zone blitz in H.S. long before Charlie switched his D

Those national stat rankings are New Mexico Loboesque... and they have been playing in front of Covid crowds for the better part of 2 decades. The fact that the huskers still have a large loyal following is nothing short of a miracle. Stand up and give yourselves a high five.

Why? for being as pathetic as the team?
Just kidding. Yup and we say Frost is stubborn... I think all us Nebraskans must be.
We believe that as it once was so it shall be again.

Reminds me of watching my boys when they were playing midget city league football in Lincoln years ago just wanting them to learn how to block ... It's pathetic

Any President or CEO of a small to large corporation that reported these kind of numbers would be terminated! Man it’s hard to fathom how far this program has digressed. Sadly unless he starts pulling off top 5 recruiting classes I don’t see it getting any better!!!!!!!

Here are some more stats. Here is the source link: McKewon: QB play, third downs, coaching, you name it: It went wrong for Huskers in Illini loss | Football | omaha.com

FUMBLES: 2.5 Fumbles per game, so nine total for the season. Four have been recovered by the defense. On brand for the Huskers under Frost. NU averaged 2.25 fumbles per game last season and 2.33 the season before that. Both marks ranked last in the Big Ten.

3RD DOWN CONVERSION:
NU’s opponents are now converting, for the season, 53.97% of their third downs. A Big Ten defense hasn’t been north of 50%, in a full season, since the 2013 Darrell Hazell Purdue team that finished 1-11.

The Husker offense, meanwhile, is converting just 32% of its third downs. The -21.97% gap between offensive and defensive performance is larger than any Big Ten team since, again, Hazell’s 2013 Purdue team.

TD RATE: Nebraska’s touchdown rate in the red zone is 41.17%. It ranks last in the Big Ten and is running worse than the 51.11% pace the Huskers set in 2017, when they also ranked last in the league.

QB Development: Not a stat, but a head scratcher, for sure. NU has three men — a head coach, an offensive coordinator and a position-specific coach — who have all developed, recruited or coordinated quarterbacks in their long, well-traveled careers. Why do our QBs struggle so much?

That's the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 dollar question.

Here's another: We don't get high 4* or 5* players very often, but when we do, they rarely, if ever, pan out. Why?

Just seems so bizarre.

I do not see our problems as recruiting problems we have had around top 20 classes since Frost got here, NWU and Wisky do more with less.
