My Take

"Talent is clearly a problem, because Nebraska has very little of it. Hixon wouldn't start for my kid's high school team. But talent today wasn't the issue. The issue was coaching. The team was put in a hole due to Frost's inexplicable play calling and then doomed by Frost's incompetence as a game manager."

Nebraska has enough student talent to be in a middling bowl. The really big reason we are not bowling is with the staff, special teams, defense and offense. Chins failure to put out a decent defense has hurt big time, 17 points yesterday, Walters has failed in convincing Frost that Martinez is not the QB to get us there and special teams are very unspecial and have cost us at least two games. My eight ball isnt what it used to be, but it tells me there will be no staff changes because our problems are all athlete related.

If I ran a poll of B1G coaches, none of them would want a change either.

Let me start off by saying I know some people think I'm negative. That's far from the truth. I am positive until such a time when I see a performance that eliminates my confidence in a coaching staff. While I've been consistently disappointed with Frost, today was the final straw.

Before you sunshine pumpers get your panties in a bunch, I've taken the exact same approach with Callahan, Pelini and Riley. I believed in each until they failed. It took longer with Pelini, just a few more games with Riley. But in each case I was right, and I'm sad to say I think I'm right with Frost.

Let's start with today. The gimmick play calling was an embarrassment to Nebraska football. First of all, it clearly wasn't working and Frost continued to run moronic plays with personnel who are incapable of running such plays even if they were well planned. Which they weren't. Frost basically told his offense that you're not good enough to beat Iowa so I'm going to try a bunch of middle school trick plays to keep up. The comical nature of the lack of success was only surpassed by Frost's insistence on continuing to do it.

Additionally, Martinez is not a good quarterback. It's possible that he was a better player last year and somehow regressed under Frost's coaching. But more likely he got a little lucky last year and was a marginally bright flash on a terrible team.

This year he's a shell of what people predicted he was going to be. He's a poor passer, he's slow, he's physically weak, he goes down easily and he's indecisive. And he's going to start every game for the remainder of his days at Nebraska because Frost has hitched his wagon to him. Frost won't die on the Martinez hill because he's extraordinarily well compensated. Nebraska football is going to die on the Martinez hill.

Talent is clearly a problem, because Nebraska has very little of it. Hixon wouldn't start for my kid's high school team. But talent today wasn't the issue. The issue was coaching. The team was put in a hole due to Frost's inexplicable play calling and then doomed by Frost's incompetence as a game manager.

I could pick any 6th grade football team in the United States and on each the majority of players would know that Martinez should not have gone out of bounds when they were clearly playing to get to overtime. It's 2nd and 19 and you run out of bounds with less than a minute on the clock? The incompetence of that series makes my head spin and that's coming from a guy who is basically numb to Nebraska's ineptitude.

Frost wants to coddle Martinez more than he wants to win, and that makes him a colossal mistake as a coach. We've seen it before, and now we're seeing it again at 5 million per year. Martinez is a MAC level QB, at best.

Some or most of you will say Frost needs more time and recruiting. For what? He's already proven he can't manage a game. And with better recruits all he's going to do is count on talent to hide his and his assistant's incompetence as coaches. In year two, this team got worse as the year went on and the one game where it could have changed the trajectory of the program, Frost destroyed their chances by trying to be cute instead of being a leader of young men.

Today was the day for me. If I had to guess, I'd say it's Frost's arrogance that lost this game and will destroy the program. Every recruit that considers the Huskers needs to know that Frost will make a priority of his ego instead of doing what it takes to win games.

And for the the Frost fluffers, let me help you out with a Q and A

But Frost needs to get his own players here.

So a failing QB can start while more talented players sit on the bench. All the talent in the world isn't going to be overcome coaching incompetence. While the Huskers are devoid of talent, today's loss was a coaching failure.

He's still growing as a coach.

Then why in the hell did you pay him $5 million per year and give him a contract extension?

You're not seeing the progress.

What progress? The team got worse this year, the players got worse and the only team they beat in the second half of the season was Maryland. Nebraska is the 3rd worst team in the B10. The entire B10.

I still have faith that Frost will get it done.

Based on what? He didn't improve the team he inherited. If anything, they got worse. Same lack of discipline, same blowouts, same poor play, same everything. He's a more buff version of Riley.

Every word I typed today hurts me to the core because I believed in Frost as much as any of you. I thought he was the solution and that the Huskers were coming back. But they aren't. Not under Frost and not under his coaching staff. They are completely out of their element against real P5 coaches and without a complete revamp of the staff, we're looking at 7-5 or 6-6 and maybe a sneaky 8-4 once or twice in the next 5 years.

Frost isn't the failure. He doesn't coach ST/LBs or D. That's where the majority of the fault lies. So if DeWitt/Chins doesn't fix their lane quick, THEY will be the reason SF doesn't get things turned around.

So it will be SF's offseason soul searching that will determine just how serious he is about turning things around.

SF knows what is needed to succeed in Lincoln. He's lived it, but those other guys,... only Ruud can sit in the same boat.

Man this thread got ugly fast...

Well after watching OSU...HCSF has a ton of work to do. I think he can get it done.

I think the defense played way more than well enough to win the game yesterday. They only gave up 17 points and they scored 7 themselves. Iowa didn't score a point from midway through the 2nd quarter until the last second FG.

The offense on the other hand, was again a cluster of strange play calls, strange play sequences, whiffed blocks at crucial times, strange personnel choices and indecisive QB play. They only scored 17 points.

I know the easy thing to do in everyone's minds is to say assistants have to go and the one with the biggest target on his back is Chinander. It's a lot easier than saying or thinking that there is an issue with the golden boy. Yesterday, golden boy didn't cut it and Chins did OK.

Special teams I agree went total Panico most of the year.

Offense and Special Teams Along with bone head coaching lost the game.

really...How many times are they going to run that swing pass for a loss? It was like watching Bo Pelini trying to figure out “The Jet Sweep”.
