Been a tough summer on unplanned expenses - won't go into the numbers but here's the list of things we had to address that were not budgeted this year....

  • 2 CV Axles on my son's car (both broken about a month apart - car undrivable until fixed so throw in 2 tows as well)
  • New Water heater (15 years old) - the kind with the built in electric vent fan due to how our vent is built in the house - which makes the replacement WAY more expensive
  • New microwave (15 years old)
  • AC on my wife's van went kaput - new compressor needed
  • 20 Soft Wave appointments (not covered by insurance) - OK - this is a bit more "planned" but let's just say these aren't cheap but damn do they work - shoulder is 100% better vs. when I started going.
I won't be eating steak for dinner anytime soon. I can't remember a run of bad luck like this.....maybe this is a sign Nebraska will win more than 7 games this season? One can hope!

I suspect you don't remember a run of bad luck like this because you got through it. You're not a spring chicken and I'm sure this weighs on you a bit more as we all find our energy diminishing as we age.
It's okay to let people know The Old Man's days of solving every problem alone are coming to an end. Your network needs to haul their share of water from the well. If your son has a car, he needs to handle his own business and reap the satisfaction of standing on his own two feet.

Having said the above, it's not my place to give you advice, so ignore it as a crusty old Toot's mutterings if you want.
Wishing you peace and comfort.
GBR.

Appreciate the thoughts Pavlov - I should have clarified my son is still in college and providing a car is part of our agreed support - that ends next May when he graduates (fingers crossed) - then it will become his problem to keep it going. He crashed the dang thing this last winter and we refused to just fix it for free. He paid for the mechanical issues caused by said crash and I taped the front bumper together so it was 100% drivable - watching NASCAR comes in handy in these instances - I am a master with a roll of duct tape. That is how it will stay unless he has a way to pay for fixing it. Once out of school - he's welcome to keep living at home - but otherwise support stops for the car and pretty much everything else. Get a job sonny boy.....lol.

We did the same for our oldest child while in college and they did graduate. My youngest hadn't shown any inkling to go to college - but we are willing to provide a car to keep things fair - he'll be paying to keep it going from Day 1 if not in school but that seems reasonable to me. So far he hasn't even bothered to get a driver's license....lol.

Your water heater lasted 15 years??? How is that possible? Mine seem to rust through approx 2-3 months after the 5 year warranty is done.

1. Get a Bradford White those SOB's are the best on the market and not cheap. That's what the builder used and what we replaced it with. You can't go to Home Depot to get one - only through licensed plumbers.
2. Rochester has pretty hard water - we had a cheap water softener when we moved in that lasted a couple years - then we replaced it with a much more robust softener. All water that goes into that water heater is softened first. We have the ion-exchange type with a separate brine tank - it really works well.

Rochester treats but does not filter water before putting it into the water system. We have a whole house water filter as well and the amount of iron and sediment it captures is a bit disturbing. Especially when they clean out the fire hydrants. Filter basically gets completed clogged in a few days. If you didn't have a filter the water would be brown at least some of the time when they are blowing out hydrants.

I feel you. I made the decision to drop ~10K on landscaping all around my house. That 10K is my "rainy day" fund. And not that I want anything to happen, but I am hoping I can replenish it before anything does. (Probably just jinxed myself.)

Anyone who can drop 10K from a "rainy day" fund on any project is blessed. These are not good times for a whole lot of folks.

To be clear, it took ~4 years to accumulate that rainy day fund. So maybe using it wasn't the most ideal thing, but I looked at it as an "investment." I got so fed up with constantly having to pull weeds. In the front of the house, along the sides, in the back yard--it was just a never ending battle that I was always on the losing end of because no matter how much you pull weeds, they always come back.

I bought my house and it was a brand new build. During the design process the gal asked me if I wanted any turf installed as the house was being built or if I wanted to go with desert landscaping? Me, not really understanding that weeds would be a constant problem with desert landscaping, opted for the desert landscape. If I would have gone initially with the turf, it would have only added ~2,000 to my overall final price, which over a 30 year mortgage would equate to ~10 more a month in my mortgage payment. So, as per usual in life, I'm paying more after the fact because I went cheaper at the outset. Lesson learned.

I apologize if my post sounded like I was questioning your decision, 99. I was just making a snide general comment about the state of our economy.

No worries. Believe me, I am well aware of how utterly in the sewer everything is right now. But that's what happens when the most morally bankrupt, corrupt, and literally the stupidest people in the entire history of stupid people are running the country.

Sneaking in one quick comment before this gets locked - seems as if things are calming down. Although I did have to go to the dentist today. Only scared of 3 things in this world. Women and the police (and the dentist).

Yes, go cry to the mods. Pathetic.
There is a reason politics are not allowed on this board. Some people have difficulty controlling their emotions.

You will notice “The Third Rail” forum does not appear on the new message board. This is a significant change from the previous BHF forum. Please note it and take it to heart. Willingly choosing to ignore this rule will get you shown the door. These topics are no longer welcome:

• Politics
• Religion
• Politics + Religion

To get along, all we ask is that you leave the political and religious discussions out of the BHF message board. Nobody ever wins these discussions and they often bring out the worst in us.

This isn't a pro-right or pro-left thing and it's not directed at any one individual. Whether you think you are holding an intelligent conversation or your goal is merely to provoke others, please take it somewhere else. We will actively close/delete any such discussion.

My apolitical rant and I'm done.

This board exists to bring Husker fans together. Sure, we can debate whether the fullback should be an integral part of our offense, but ultimately, we are all here to stand in unity with our favorite team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. When a member brings their political beliefs into any discussion, half of the board is going to vehemently disagree and suddenly Husker Nation is being divided by something other than why we all contribute to this second-to-none forum.

I mean no disrespect to my fellow New Mexican, H99. There was another former member whose political beliefs were in contrast to H99, and it made me cringe when he would go on his rants as well. I haven't seen him on the board in close to two years. I don't know if the mods gave him an ultimatum or he chose to leave because of warnings, but this forum is much better off if we are debating whether Coach Matt's 19-19 record is better than Smilin' Mike Riley's 19-19 record.

The rules on political discussion cannot be any clearer, as stated verbatim in my rebuttal to H99's comment.

In my 40+ years in the workforce, I can honestly say I had no idea the political affiliation of 90% of my colleagues, and people were happier then. Your political opinion matters on the first Tuesday of November. That's it. Let's keep it that way on BHF.
