When I look at what is needed to be a great HC, several things come to mind.
First, he must always have his team prepared. There is no way he will know everything his opponent will throw at him so he must the able to adjust on the fly. A great coach would never come out with "they came out in a different front than we expected, so we lost half our offense". Frost failed this need many times.
Second, he needs to make good in game adjustments. No team should be able to run the same play over and over with success. Again, Frost failed at this task.
Third, you need to put your players in situations where they can win. You exploit positive matchups, you exploit player strengths, you scheme to minimize weaknesses. For a large part, Frost failed here as well.
Fourth, you change when necessary. Osborne was a great example of this. He saw his failings and made the changes necessary to fix them. He made changes and evolved his system into a monster. You need to coach with data. You can't be complacent. A good coach tries to break down and fix every aspect that didn't work in a game because he knows other coaches will note them and exploit them if they can. Frost seemed totally unable to do this.
Fifth, you need to recruit. Not only recruiting good players, but players that fit your needs, system and culture. Frost was not great at this but adequate. I would give him a B-.
Sixth, you need to inspire your players. You need to give your players confidence and attitude. Frost did not seem to have this quality either.
Lastly, you need to have whiskers. You need to have been around the block long enough to know what is coming. You need to have been beat up. Because those beat downs are what you learn from. Beat downs separate winners from losers. Winners get mad, adjust and get better. Losers accept their fate. Frost, had no whiskers when he came here and like an entitled brat, he refused to grow.
In short, Frost was not Power 5 HC material. He was a one hit wonder and a fan favorite. I had hopes he would grow into his job, but he never did.
I had doubts about Ablerts at AD as well. Mainly because he was coming from a small program without a football program. But I have changed my mind. His actions have shown he is very capable. I think he will do what is necessary to right this ship. I am confident a turnaround is coming.
