Matt Rhule said a Nebraska fan yelled at his 13-year-old ...

I enjoy getting into passionate debates over all things Husker football. There's a lot for all of us to get angry and frustrated about looking at the last three games.

But there's a Grand Canyon-wide difference between bashing Matt Rhule's coaching and questioning the man's character. In my opinion, that crosses the line.
Bo Pelini's character was questioned all the time. Scott Frost's character even more so. Heck, even the nicest guy to ever grace a college football sideline, Mike (Hip Hip Hooray) Riley's character was questioned towards the end of his time in Lincoln. Why is Coach Matt's character above reproach? The way he bilked this program out of more buyout money when the Penn State job was open is a great starting point.

I watched Locked on Nebraska yesterday with Mitch Sherman and Conner Happer. Mitch had a very difficult time not laughing when he read the following, verbatim...

First let me set this up. The Rhule family was contemplating whether it was all worth it. Coach Matt and the Mrs. wondering if the $8million per year was worth what the family was going through. Well, apparently the voice of reason in the Rhule Family is their 10 year old daughter. Mitch quoted Rhule when he read the following

"You know what my 10 year old daughter said to me? She texted me 'Mom asked the question Is this too much for you guys?' And she was like Dad I love Nebraska. I love living in Nebraska. I love Nebraska football. I love the players. I'm tough. This is just teaching me life lessons. Please don't quit."

Does this sound like a 10 year old girl expressing her thoughts to her father or a head coach gaslighting the fanbase to garner some favor during a very difficult time in his coaching career?

The look on Sherman's face said it all after reading that quote.

I'm sorry Fum. I have come to the conclusion that Coach Matt is a sham.

Doc, I think you're conflating things a bit. There's a difference between loyalty and blind loyalty. I don't think HCMR can walk on water and I don't expect him to. As far as this thread, I personally feel it's overblown. While I feel there were many emotions at play in his response, his course of action showed, to me, a weakness of character. If only for a moment. We're all human.

Based on their behavior.

His character? Hmmm...guess I'm getting too old. I don't remember that.
Why is Coach Matt's character above reproach?
What has he done, character-wise, to warrant the insinuation he's lying about his 13-year old daughter to the public--including to his wife and young daughters who will no doubt hear all this fuss? Sorry, honey, Daddy is telling a lie about you.

You've made yourself crystal clear for sometime now. That's fine. I'm just saying I am going to leave my bitching to the product on the field until I have tangible proof, you know like all the embarrassing shenanigans we learned about Bo, Frost or the conduct of some of our past players, before I bash them.

A lot to cover here Doc, but I'll give it a shot.

Mike Riley's character wasn't called into question so much while he was HC at Nebraska, but after he was fired he took an "assistant head coach" position back at Oregon State for WAY below market value, and Husker Nation was livid because UNL was still on the hook for his salary minus the 100k or whatever he was making at OSU. His "character" was most certainly called into question for that maneuver.

What has Coach Matt done to question his character? Let's try a different angle. Let's assume that his 13 year old daughter was in fact told those horrible things by an idiot fan. And let's assume his 10 year old daughter actually does have the skills of a professional motivational speaker attempting to inspire her father to bigger and better things. Why did Coach Matt feel it necessary to bring up his family at all during the Monday press conference? Was it to shield him from the press and fans bitching about the product on the field? The deflection he so often uses in his pressers can be construed as a character flaw.

This thread has gotten more attention than it deserves. Don't make me start loading nonsense memes. I get there may have been a political maneuvering to his telling of the incident, but we have blown it WAY OUT OF PROPORTION! If I'm the voice of reason, what does that tell you?

I think some folks on here just are hurt that this fans behavior reflects negatively on the greatest fans in college football. Do you really think Rhule would lie and have his daughter know he's lying and have her pretend it happened?
Come on I can believe it happened and like I said I would have done and said a whole lot more

I don't have kids but, based on how I react if someone says some bs about my dogs, I can pretty much guarantee my response would be stronger than Rhule's was if I had kids and someone said something like that in front of them. I can believe that some idiot did that. We are not immune to that crap, sad to say.

If I was the head coach and I learned some A-hole yelled "FU" at MY daughter back when she was 13, you can be damned sure I'd be bringing it up during my Monday presser too--and without any of the composure Rhule showed.

If that's your idea of a character flaw, mine is far worse than Rhule's. Hell, I would make Bo Pelini blush.

That's a Big 10-4. My mother did tell me I talked like a drunken sailor after all!

Enjoy the rest of the season Doc. If we get by Rutgers in the "trap" game, maybe we can meet up at the Pinstripe Bowl!
