Matt Rhule said a Nebraska fan yelled at his 13-year-old ...

It was a very curious response when pressed for more details. At first, he seemed very upset about it (as he should be) but when asked about it later he didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Why bring it up knowing there would be further inquiries if you didn't want any more discussion.

Any of it captured on audio or video?

Another example of not mixing sports with alcohol....I'd be willing to bet that I'm right.

I'll just say that if you are so wrapped up about a stupid-assed game...you need help.
I would guess that also contributed to the objects being thrown on the field. It will get worse.

Of course, he didn't want to talk about it anymore. It sure as hell needed to be said but it's an ugly look at one of our 'fans.'

What??!? What 'further inquiries' are necessary in this case? Am I to believe you're questioning it happened???

Since you asked Doc, I’ll respond. I was appalled when I first heard of this incident. Then I watched the press conference. Coach Matt was so bothered by it he insinuated he would quit his $8 million dollar a year job to protect his children. Then his daughter stepped in and said (paraphrasing) “I love Nebraska, Dad. Keep fighting the good fight.”

Coach Matt said he would answer all questions at the start of the presser. A reporter asked where the incident took place and he shrugged it off and said, “I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” I was curious and thought it was a great question. If it happened at the Chevron gas station down the road there’s not a lot that can be done. From my understanding it happened at the stadium.

Matt brought the incident up in his opening statement and spoke at length about it. If he was so bothered that he was willing to quit his job I think a fair response would have been “We have stadium security looking into it and if there are any witnesses I hope someone steps forward and identifies this man.” Surely in a stadium that holds 90k people there are witnesses that heard this idiot. Nebraska has the best fans in the country and someone this unhinged should get a lifetime ban from all Husker sporting events.

In the very recent past we’ve had a Duke volleyball player point at a random fan in the stands at BYU and claim they were yelling racial epithets. That fan received a lifetime ban before an investigation discovered the claim was untrue. We had a WNBA player get a fan thrown out of a game for having the audacity to stand and point at her. My point is it's not like there is nothing that can be done to this jerk if the story is true.

I’m not saying this is a Jussie Rhulett situation, but Matt is under extreme pressure these days and garnering sympathy from the fans would not be a bad thing for him. I think the incident is serious enough that his conclusion should not be “Forget about that guy yelling obscenities at my family in the stadium, I just want to be there for the guy who drove down from Red Cloud for the game.”

Osborne, an actual good coach, almost left because of stuff like this so it's not surprising :Indifferent0025: Entitled fans gonna do what they do.
Yup, I posted the same thing in the Illinois VB thread. People were coming to their door while he was on recruiting trips and he genuinely worried about something happening to Nancy or their children. Doesn't make it right but crazy fans are going to be crazy fans and our fan base does seen to have a tendency towards being more than a little over the top. All of us are excluded from that last sentence of course.

It should make the fanbase look bad. It is bad.
Through these gates
No one is arguing that it isn't bad. People have brought up that TO suffered through bad fan behavior when he was HC. That of course was bad too. TO did not go on the Tom Osborne show or take time out of a press conference to bring it up though.

If somebody came after my child, I would be doing a lot more than bringing it up at a press conference. I would have lost it on the whole place and warned anybody come up in my kids face again is going to get his teeth knocked out. PERIOD!

I feel I should make it clear that in my initial post, that when I used the word "If" it was only to report that I honestly don't know how professional 'Yahoo Sports' are. I haven't heard Matt's presser even as of yet.

My initial assessment is the same though........for God's sake leave children and other family members out of it. I'm pissed like everyone else. I hope some coaching lessons were learned. but I'm quite sure family members are not calling the shots.

I really think that was why Frost lit into the press at his first presser. He wanted it to be known family off limits and what would happen if they were not left alone. Should not be necessary to do such a thing but this is the age we live in I guess.

Commendable but if you acted out on that you wouldn't be able to be in a position where you are the number 8 highest paid in your profession where decorum, restraint and being above the fray are required.

I ain't. And BTW Coach TO received threats to himself and not threats to his minor children. There is the difference

Not gonna lie the conspiracy theorist in me did have the thought cross my mind that this would be a great way to deflect heat and gain sympathy from a fanbase that is on the verge of turning into an angry mob. We said it on the board that Washington was going to be perhaps the most pivotal point in the season and the absolute worst thing that could have happened did as Nebraska followed the same exact script for the 3rd game in a row and ended up losing a game they appeared to be in control of.

We have witnessed firsthand on this board that patience is waning and tempers are flaring up so I don't doubt it is plausible that someone may have accosted his daughter which is inexcusable (that person should be banned from all UNL activities). I am sure his family has security around them so if this continues to get called into question it would help squash the rumors if a witness did step forward. As Hunchy pointed out there are examples of people who have cried "wolf" and played the victim card. I am giving Rhule the benefit of the doubt that he would not stoop to that level.

On a related note as I go to the ESPN CFB page and look at the headline in the right column the one at the very top is this one:
