Matt Davison

I think all of us have now had our expectations adjusted for this season. I'm not even thinking bowl game anymore. At this point, who could we be matched up with in a bowl that wouldn't bludgeon us?

Oh boy.....that's a damn good question.

There were times Minny just imposed their will vs. our D. On offense - we just aren't very good - does not matter who the QB is especially with no WR1. Even with him we commit a freaking penalty every time we have decent play.....yeah we got some talent gaps - but the gap between the ear hole is the biggest problem. I suspect only time can fix that - Frost will get that time - I just wonder if the patty cake football he coached in the Pac 12 and UCF hasn't somehow ended up causing him to flat miss what he teams needs to be in the B1G. I hope he can fix that - but games like last night make me concerned we might have caught a rising star that isn't really cut out to be a Power 5 head coach. He deserves more time - but put me in the concerned category after the Minny game.

I thinks he gets it partner.....

"Our offense is going to be committed to the run first," head coach Scott Frost said. "To varying degrees, we've thrown it and run it, but we can't go as an offense, and no one can go as an offense, without establishing the run."

Well, that's what he said two years ago....but I hope he hasn't forgot it. But there's a good chance he won't is my guess. We'll see.....

I think it would be fun to play a 6-6 Miami or florida State. What irrelevant bowl wouldnt want that match up....

Nebraska 6-6
vs. Miami 6-6

In the "Cheetos Good Year All State Nectarine Bowl"

A 6-6 record may or may not be within our grasp at the moment. The optimist in me thinks we can still achieve that. The pessimist or realist knows that is entirely possible that this will be another 4-8 season.

A lot rides on the Indiana game next weekend. I'm glad it's a home game, though that's no longer an almost guaranteed victory but I'll take my chances with a home game way better than with an away game.

If you all have access to see this weeks Big Red Wrap-up you should all watch it. Kevin Kugler was a guest and he made some huge points that date back to 2003. However Jay Moore breaks down some plays and shows where we had the right fits for a split second but then over ran the gaps and Minny had seen this on tape and exploited it against us.

For those of us who don't have access to it, I don't suppose you could give a quick idea of the basics of what was said? :)

Well Shoot. Let me see if I can describe it. There was one play that Minny was running toward the sideline and JoJo was headed that way and was in position at the beginning of the play. A lane opened cutting back across the field and JoJo ran right by that lane. The RB saw the lane and took off. However because JoJo overran that gap the RB ripped off 14 yards I believe instead of say 3 or 4 yards. On the other play there was a delayed Handoff to the RB up the middle. A lane opened up and Alex Davis ran right by that lane, when he realized it he tried to go back but it was too late. So we were in the right place at the beginning but as the plays developed we ended up out of position.

I'll bother you even more...lol...What did Kuglar have to say?

If using patience, squaring to the line of scrimmage over the hole is perfect medicine, as the rb chooses that hole, the LB can accelerate into it, not even allowing for a four yard gain, and if the rb keeps running along the line of scrimmage, you maintain over him behind it,spilling outside, and actualling expecting your OLBs to seal the edges, where in one, Domann couldnt come off his blck, yet he had sealed the end, and ILB pursuit should have squeezed the rb to Domann, but, he didn't.

In defense of Domann,he sealed, his outside shoulder was free,he had leverage outside, but a huge lane opened up inside of Domann, not his fault.

Minnesota scouted our team and noticed we over pursue on D and used that weakness to their advantage.

Thank you sir! Much appreciated! It really blows my mind watching this kind of sloppy, undisciplined play by the Huskers, for the past several years. I have watched a lot of football lately, and it's a rare thing when I see a Defense from a Power 5 team struggle in these areas like we do, over the extended period of time like we have. The continued poor run fits, overrunning of plays, and sloppy discipline started before Frost got here, but it's now his responsibility to stamp it out. I just hope he can put a stop to it before it also spreads to the new guys coming into the program.......

That's the really amazing thing. How in the hell can all the Defensive front 7 be guilty of the same mistake? They all make the "overrun and poor fit mistake", they just take turns doing it over the course of a game. How the hell does it become so pervasive that it becomes the SOP for the entire Defense, and not show up enough in practice to be corrected by the staff? :Iono3: Is our practice regimen not simulating game situations/stress enough, or do these players get performance anxiety and melt down when the lights go on?

Thats the question. Are we so thin our scout team is a disastrous emulation of our opponents? And, not going good on good, which SF has addressed, since he can't make us deeper and better overnight, thus making our scout teams play much better, but, good on good will help some, but scheme wise, not so much.

Who's evaluating our scout teams are important against good coaching and disciplined teams, which are plentiful in the Big.

My thoughts are, with all our turnover weve had, poor SnC, changing schemes, coaches etc, even a much lower rated team in terms of recruiting/talent, allows things to be much closer than we'd like.
SF had huge turnover, plus a last minute grab first recruiting class, so, we're as thin as ice,and have more busts in recruiting in that first class.
This isnt disastrous, but only points out whats happening with high coach turnover, and I mean all coaches not just HCs.
It's going to take some time, this staff is very young as well.
But, they're all willing to change learn and adapt.

I'm actually kind of glad to hear what HCSF and SUHnami described. The players have been criticized pretty roundly for a perceived lack of desire and will-to-win.

Consistently over-shooting gaps on D speaks to the opposite.

The coaches'll get 'em where they need to be. Better to be dialing 'em back a bit vs. trying to light a fire under their a**.
