I confess I haven't been the best Cornhusker fan of late, but sometimes life gets in the way. In this case it was someone else's life. As things are settling down though, I feel that the last experiences I've encountered, and have for many years, just might have implications for my favorite pastime........Husker sports.

For sometime I've had to help someone deal with life challenges that were not of his own making. Life dealt him a bad hand. He has had to deal with results from nuchal cord. This left him with a paralyzed arm, a partially paralyzed leg, some brain damage and other physical traumas. Through it all he managed to "keep on diggin'", to use his words. He ran track in high school......where he always came in last.....every time..... in every race. He struggled to get through high school .......but he did. Later on he got a job doing custodial work......getting up at 3:00 AM so he could get his work done before the rest of employees came to work and he could be out of their way. We kept him in jeans because he went through the knees constantly.....patching them was only a temporary fix. Cerebral Palsy is an unforgiving sentence, but this man just kept on digging.....year after year after year. The time has come that the injury is winning the war despite this gentleman's many battle victories. It's time for a motorized wheel chair and other challenges in his life........which I have little doubt that he will face with determination and dignity.

So how does this affect the situation that Frost and Co are going through? For my money if what coach Frost is saying is genuine, and if the words have substance, then I believe that hard work, perseverance, and giving way to the greater good will pay dividends. We only look at the champions, but sometimes we forget to look at the minions that built the stage they stand on. As I was able to meet the many, many people who the gentleman above affected I began to see the impact of what influence attitude and strength of character can accomplish.......one lady wrote an article about him in the local paper (only referencing his first name so as not to embarrass him). Others gave him rides to work early on the mornings of inclimate weather. Still others donated time to take him to church and other functions.

Hard work and good intentions won't be enough to elevate our program, but I think I can see where they will be important pieces of the puzzle. We need talent. We need strength and speed. But I really think they won't be enough without a "keep on digging" attitude. For those who seem to have both (Ziggy and Jackson come to mind) I really, really feel we will be in for good times in the coming years. GBR

We need more posts like these. I debate whether to share this but what the hell:

3 weeks ago today I was suicidal. I was ready to do it and it had been 8 months in the making. Fortunately, in retrospect, I had some friends and family that intervened and they literally saved my life, not just that night but for good. Its a very long story about how I got to that point so I wont bore with the details, but for me it has been a very similar situation to the guy you were talking about and his theme of "just keep digging". I quit digging. And as stupid as it sounds to relate the 2, our team stopped digging. They had given up hope much like I had. Its hard to see your way out of that scenario, whether its on an individual basis or a team basis like what we have seen, but it can be done. Hope is a fickle friend and can turn on you in a heartbeat, but if allowed to, it always comes back. This team now has hope.

Now that I typed that it sounds even more stupid than I expected but quite honestly I dont care. This is a community of friends and friends share things.

I had an Aunt with a very similar situation...She had Neurofibromatosis( Elephant Man disease) she battled her whole life until her body became a useless tomb...Prayers for your friend my man.

As a young boy growing up in Omaha, my neighbor down the street had a visitor come to her house.
Being in the neighborhood, anything that happened was spied out by us kids.
I went down to my friends house, where I met a young man in a wheel chair, he was thin, and his limbs were somewhat folded in ways that we all notice, especially a young boy.
My neighbor introduced us, she gave me his name, I gave him mine, and then again, as a young boy, I noticed he had trouble talking, I had trouble understanding, but seeing his efforts in talking with me only spurred mine on towards a good conversation.
He told me he was an artist, and mainly at the time, he did cards, then, though I didnt know it at the time, theyd make prints and run duplicates.
He motioned towards a bag attached to his chair, where I reached in and pulled out several beautiful cards, he gave me one to keep, and I thanked him.
I asked him as bravely and politely as a young boy could, venturing into a learning experience, with no adults around, and said, How do you paint these cards, where he told me, he held the brush in his teeth, as we both knew his withered arms hadnt the control to do such nice work.
It was an experience I will never forget, has given me perspectives, good ones, on all differing people.
Luckily, my only loss was, at some point, I lost that card.

Thanks for sharing redfred, just awesome

I'm so glad you're here to post Crazy. It's easy to say to never give up, but quite another to do it. There are resources. The trick is to find the one that meets your needs. A close friend found the book "your are not you brain" by Jeffrey Schwartz led him down a path to recovery.

As you say, Crazy, we ARE a community of friends here in this forum (even the grumpy ones amongst us!). Most of us have never met each other but you kind of get to know the posters by their remarks over a period of time. I hope that you really are past your problem but we are here for you should the need arise. I know despair. I've had prostate cancer. There was a period of my life in Hollywood when I didn't know where my next meal was coming from, no money to pay the rent. There is always hope, always a new day coming.

Buddy, you owe it to us to keep this board as Crazy as it is!

You have to keep going my friend. Life is meant to be lived...I wish you nothing but good health...Mind, body, and Soul. As well as the rest of you posters on here.

Incredible post and replies everyone. One of the many reasons I love this board (family) so much.

Crazy, I am sure glad you are still with us. I don't know where you stand on things like this, but I will most definitely add you to my prayer list.

My son X has been the greatest personal example of "just keep digging" as he continues to battle back from a tubing accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury over three and half years ago. Confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak to this day, he not only epitomizes "keep digging" he is nothing short of my hero. There isn't a day that goes by that we lead in him the Husker prayer..."day by day, we get better and better. Till we can't be beat. Won't. Be. Beat.

And as all this circles back to our Huskers and the foundation that HCSF is constructing, it is easy to see that much of our team is coming to that very understanding.

Keep on diggin' crazy. I lost a brother in law to suicide almost 2 years ago. He did it 2 weeks after attending a funeral of a high school girl who committed suicide. A good friend of mine's daughter has been in and out of counseling for mental health. I hope you find or found the help you need. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers

I remember when the boards were just a goofy distraction. Things have changed in the last 20 years. The interactions we all have have are no different than real life now. People dont always realize it but the things that are said on the boards are no different than what is said in real life as to how they affect people. Something funny makes us laugh, something sad makes us mournful, and something hurtful has an equal effect. Its easy to dismiss comments because its anonymous, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that if a person is near the edge that it isnt out of the realm of possibility for something on a message board to tip them. That wasnt my situation at all and I absolutely would not claim that anyone here has done anything that crosses that line, but its something i hope people are mindful of. Ugh. Sorry to rant and be a downer, I just wanted to be honest in my feelings.

Crazyhole, I know "it's just a message board community", but I'm so VERY glad that you decided to stay with us! You absolutely have value here, and you enrich the BHF experience for all of us! I appreciate your honesty, and I hope you are now in a place in life that you can find some joy in life, and will be with us for a long, long time! GBR

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone. And thanks for so many responses. They all just prove what I have known about everyone here. We disagree often......thankfully so. It is the challenges that make us better.

As we helped the individual above move to a facility, I was impressed to see letters and signed pictures from his heroes. Tom Osborne, Tom Landry, and there was one from Bo. It was tucked in a drawer instead of on his wall........I'm not sure what that meant. :) I have always felt that sports were an avenue for better life experiences if used properly, and kept in perspective. The above just reinforces that belief.

Nailed it, Crazy! This truly IS a community of friends. We love giving each other grief. But the truth of the matter is there are really good people around here who you can always depend on.

PMs are available here for a reason. :)

Sailor, so glad to hear he's coming along. We have very dear friends whose son is high on the spectrum and my wife and I are always amazed with the labor of love involved. Prayers for compassion and endurance!

Most of you probably never heard of gregnlincoln.
A few oldtimers from previous boards may recall him. He was truly one of a kind.
Regardless, his signature line was true when he wrote it and is true now -

We are all brothers and sisters on this board when it comes to NU football.
Fans of Nebraska sports are all brothers and sisters.

Thank you...It’s not easy but to be completely honest I couldn’t imagine him any other way nor would I want him any other way. I’m sure your friends feel the same about their son.

Greg was a weird dude, but never was there a bigger husker fan. I wish I could have gone to a game with him just to see if he actually had the ability to project his voice. Still smile when I think about the brewsky bashes that he went to.
