Is College Football ruining College Football?

College football fans are a rare breed. I do not know of one college football fan who has switched allegiances from one school to another. I root for my hometown Lobos, and if there is an SEC game involving LSU I can assure you I am rooting for LSU. But my favorite team will ALWAYS be the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
NFL fans are not loyal at all. Here in Albuquerque you will always see Cowboys and Raiders gear. The third most popular team is who won the SB last year. I never saw KC Chiefs gear in 30 years until a few years ago. Suddenly there were Chief fans everywhere. Before that it was Patriots, and of course before that the 49ers.
NBA fans? Fuhgetaboutit. Where is Lebron playing this year? That's the jersey you will see.
College football is different. We have no where to turn. For the last 10 years Husker fans have had no choice but to grin and Barrett. And now players we cheered for the last 2-4 years can simply say "Adios, I'm taking my talents elsewhere."
Don't get me started with the "Fear of injury in a bowl game" crap either. I can't imagine a guy like Mike Croel, who I believe was the 1st player taken in the draft, saying "Nah, I'll pass on the Fiesta Bowl matchup with Florida State. It's not for an NC." I'm trying not to leave college football, but feel it's doing everything in its power to leave me.

42 bowl games.
16 played so far, 4 cancelled so far.
I probably haven't watched more than about 10 minutes.
Normally I love college football but the Nebraska struggles have made watching anything hard.
5 games on today and I have been watching Houston/Auburn. So maybe today gets me back into the bowl season.

The opting out is bothersome but not surprising anymore. The longer the season goes and the more time between the end of the season and bowl games, we will continue to see more of this. If there was a Spring season it would be 100 times worse with players not playing.
I'm guessing players not wanting to play in what many of them see as meaningless games after having a 12 or 13 game season is the main reason. Guys worried about getting hurt or wanting to start training for the draft is the main reason but I'm guessing the odds of getting a major injury in the bowl game is miniscule but it happens.

You've missed some great football. Even some of the re-runs are great to rewatch. Army beating Mizzery never gets old.

If I was a CEO of a company I would have in the NIL contract that the player played in the bowl game or forfeited the money. This is a bunch of crap, players dropping out.

And why? At least my idea for 9 months of football made the bowl season worthwhile for them to play. You're asking them sell out. Screw that if they are getting first round money.

In a CFB world with no rules, it won't be long before assistant coaches start lobbying for new jobs advertising that a 4-star stud will come with them as part of a packaged deal (it will also work vise-versa with programs going after position coaches with great players in their rooms too.)

If I understand you correctly what you are trying to say is "Yes"...college football is ruining college football.

There are plenty of rules in college football. They just favor the players are the moment.

The all time BS crookery was Kansas hiring Ed Manning as an assistant coach and then signing his son, the consensus high school player of the year. Like Alabama has shown, find a team of Johnny Cochrans and find ways to skirt the rules.

COVID isn't going away anytime soon for many reasons. So the NCAA should adjust and spread the season out. Make the calendar year end your bowl season for rivalry games. National exposure of these games during the holiday could turn some walk-on from Idaho an instant name overnight worthy of NIL money. Focus on the players that perform and your NIL recruiting will become balanced with 'what have you done for me lately.' The NFL would have to draft later. With playoffs at end of school year it puts these prima donnas in a rock and a hard spot when it comes to playing. Dodge competition and risk NFL exposure, or play and take where it leads you.
