Husker position groups ranked

Which makes me ask the questions, regarding ATX and Doc Fumbles posts, #14 and 15 respectively:

* If Bradden was such a terrible DL coach, how in the world did he make it all the way to be an NFL coach?
* Wasn't the KC Chiefs DL one of the best in the league while he was there?
* How can a guy, teaching the same techniques, be good in the NFL and terrible in college?
Joe Cullen is the full-time DL coach in Kansas City, so apparently Bradden just didn't learn anything as his associate coach ;scared

And now with he and Donovan Raiola being unceremoniously sh*tcanned, I hope the hiring of associate to the assistant coach is either abandoned or at least much better scrutinized in the hiring process :confused0068:

Good question. Prior to his KC stint, he was a quality control assistant at Florida Atlantic then became the youngest HC and AD in the State of Florida at (age 24) his former HS. He was only there for one year. A year later he was a GA at Bethune Cookman and became one of those 'consultant' types for the Chiefs in 2019. I'm guessing he knew somebody.

He was an assistant to the position coach. Given their DL's quality, what did he really have to do?
* How can a guy, teaching the same techniques, be good in the NFL and terrible in college?
Again, given the maturity and quality of the players involved, what 'teaching' did he really have to do?
* What was Bradden's interview like if they (Rhule, Snow, whoever) couldn't discern that Bradden was bad?
Saying what you can do in an interview and actually doing it well are two very different things.

In Bradden's unique case, unlike other applicants he was competing against who've been true position coaches elsewhere, he had no relevant tape to show. A big plus for Bradden's candidacy is that I'm betting he had a strong recommendation from Andy Reid who Coach Rhule greatly respects.

On that front, you have to take all recommendations with a grain of salt no matter who they come from. FWIW, Harvey Perlman was sold on Shawn Eichorst because of a glowing recommendation from Barry Alvarez. Despite bombing at Nebraska, that same Alvarez endorsement worked for SE again when he applied to return to Wisconsin.

You're asking me like I know the answer.

;zombie

I swear, I think I could actually coach college football, literally any position, better than half the existing coaches. (Only half joking.)

Excellent point NC. A P4 program of Nebraska's magnitude should not be hiring the "assistant to the traveling secretary" as a position coach. It's been an epic fail twice with this coaching staff. I know Frost originally hired Raiola, but the Nation of Husker was in shock when he was the lone holdover from Frost's abysmal staph. The infection was allowed to percolate for 3 additional seasons. The single reason I have hope going into this season is the addition of Colandrea and the dismissal of Tio Donny and Bradden.

I have many more reasons than you, Hunchie. But that said, these departures were absolutely critical.

Now the natural fan reaction to these two firings should've been "DUH!" but, as we've seen over the years, we've had previous head coaches who've bristled at the very thought of bowing to public pressure.

OF COURSE, these types of "course corrections" reflect poorly on the head coach and generate the natural "Is this a reboot?" questions that Rhule got pissed about. But everybody makes mistakes. The great coaches are the ones who can swallow their pride, keep their noses to the grindstone and keep pushing forward day-by-day.

Said it before, say it again: One thing I truly admire Coach Rhule for, the fact he's willing to make changes. And I don't really like the idea of notion that Rhule made changes because of "public pressure." I'd like to think that he made changes because he saw the same glaring deficiencies we, as fans, did. Three years ago Nebraska was horrible on Special Teams: missed field goals, missed extra points, high snaps, blocked punts, giving up punt returns for touchdowns, etc. Coach Rhule saw that Nebraska was bad on ST and made changes.

He did take way too long to get rid of a terrible OL coach, but I suspect, as others have opined here, that Donovan was retained solely so we could sign Dylan at QB.

Last year he saw the same problems on defense we talked about all season right here on BHF. This past off-season, he essentially brought in an entirely new defensive staff, minus the DB coach. And, word through the grapevine was once Rhule hired his new DC, he gave the DC permission to hire guys he wanted--which is almost unheard of.

Is this roster of players (including portal additions), cadre of coaches (new and existing), new defensive scheme, off-season training, etc, is this 2026 the season where everything comes together? That's the 10 million dollar question.

It's the 31.1 million dollar question.

He's made a number of them. The biggest one IMO was when he replaced Satt as OC. I think most of us thought Satt would get the boot after the season but I don't think anybody expected him to be replaced DURING the season.

It was a gutsy call and one that got us to bowl eligibility. But in hindsight, the biggest thing was that Holgorsen immediately elevated Emmett Johnson. If that hadn't have happened, EJ would have left Nebraska and probably wouldn't have had an All-American season.
