Greg Bell leaves the team

I remember a time when a pretty good QB name Eric Crouch came close to leaving NU. At that time many fans like many on this board said let him go who needs a quitter. Fortunately the coaches were a little more tolerant. They massaged his ego a little and he stuck.

Part of being a competitive player is to have a lot of confidence in yourself. Many of them also have huge egos. You don't get to be a top 50 recruit or the number one JC player without a lot of talent. I agree that these players had yet to raise eyebrows at NU. However, anyone who is paying attentions will notice that few players on this team are.

We should all remember that these kids are playing in a new offense. They are not sure of their assignments, they don't know what to expect from their teammates, the line is not great, they have not established a link with the QB. It is not hard to see where a kid might feel lost.

While it is easy to sit on your couch and say these guys just need to shut up and suck it up, you need to remember the program needs players with this type of talent. Both of these players have the potential to be game changers and NU has been woefully short of game changers lately. I am sad to see them leave.
I get what you are saying, but this is life. If they think real life is going to be as easy as saying you want to start we'd all be millionaires. Bell and Lindsey may very well have a whole world of talent but neither have the intestinal fortitude to show it. Heck Stanley Morgan Jr and J.D. Spielman have both shown they were worth every bit of their 4 stars since their respective Freshman years. And the new offense hasn't slowed them down at all. That's because they are confident in their abilities no matter who the coach, QB, OL, offense was/were. They are also both willing to put in the time and effort to better themselves not pout if they lose their starting job then quit. Ozigobo case in point. His 3 years under Riley it seemed like he was in their doghouse. This year he's 3rd on the depth chart and a SR. He could've said. "I'm done if I'm not going to start." He didn't do that. He kept fighting and made the most of his opportunities. Now he's set to start his 2nd game in a row this season.

You bring up the Crouch situation, his tantrum led to Solich going to his house in Omaha begging on hands and knees not to go. Let me ask you this? Who at that point was running the team? Crouch or Solich? This is Frosts's team. He is the coach/parent and he's not going to let selfish players dictate what's going to be done and not done. That's not how running a team or parenting works. In both cases you establish you are in charge and that's it. It's not a democracy it's a dictatorship. Just like Coach Boone said in the movie "Remember the Titans".

Think back to when TO was coach, did he ever (that we know of) beg players to stay if they threatened to quit because they lost their starting job? Nope not once that I know of ever happened.

I would rather have a bunch of hardworking, mentally right, coachable, maybe not as talented, team guys than a bunch of talented, Show nothing, selfish, and expect to start guys that quit when the going gets tough and they don't want to fight for their job and more importantly their team.

Everyone is replaceable...Everyone. I was not a fan of the coaches going after Crouch after he bolted. Most of these kids are the best on their HS teams then get smacked with reality when they are at the bottom in College...Same thing with the NFL. Some are Uber talented but without discipline and hard work it means nothing...Lawrence Phillips, Jamarcus Russel, Maurice Clarrette, Ryan Leaf, Vince Young,

I had clients in and out yesterday afternoon so I was listening to the pregame on The Wolf. I'm not sure who was doing the commenting but they were talking about Bell leaving. If I heard him correctly, he said that the 4 game rule was being misinterpreted and that Bell would not be able to play until 2020. Also said that he felt that the players were being taken advantage of by those who really didn't have their best interests at heart (that's a paraphrase as I was also talking to a client at that point).

All this makes me wonder what is true regarding the 4 game rule.

Dumb kids that didn't bother to understand the rule. 4 games and you can redshirt. If you graduate you don't have to sit out a year after playing 4 games. Otherwise you have to sit out next season if you go to an FBS school. Only way you don't sit out, besides graduating, is to move down a division.

I suspect Bell has no clue what he is doing. Doesn't matter though. The offense is fine without him. Next season he would likely have been 4th or 5th string anyways. Those kids committed to this class are much better athletes.

For those who don't think star rating mean anything explain Washington and Martinez. These are the type of players who can turn this program around. We need more.

True, but not all 4 stars are the same. Bell and especially Lindsey were and are not world beaters, and never showed the were the 4 stars they were rated at. Morgan, Spielman, & Martinez have shown their 4 star worth since they were Freshmen. Washington is on that path as well, he just needs more touches.

Yes we need more Martinez, Washington, Spielman, Morgan, but sometimes those highly rated recruits don't pan out. Heck wasn't Farmer a consensus 4 star recruit? How's he done?

My take is transition from high school to college has to be learned, or, from some guys, they just never take their foot off the pedal like Mo.
In AMs case, his composure at qb is invaluable, plus his skill set.
Guys like Lindsey and Bell have to invest in themselves and not worry about anthing else.
I really cant see Mo or AM worrying about playing time, to them, its go time, but not everyone has that

FYI--Spielman was a 3 star on rivals and 247

Not all players play to potential right off the bat. Suh, did not shine until his 4th and 5th years. For many it takes time to adjust to the college game. Bell was the starter for 3 games, I would say the coaches saw something in him. I might add it is hard to run without a hole to run through. The coaches said Lindsey was improving every game too. The physical talent is there, he just needed to conquer the mental part.

I will bet you right now that both of these players have some huge games and you will be saying they didn't do that at NU.

He rode the line at four star even so.
He had many things against the perfect prospect.
Height being one, the other, athletes are often tweeners.
Bo often failed at these guys, or, won hugely, like AA, but JD was a rb out of high school, a returner as well, good db, decent reciever, but he did all well, and excelled on returns and his running, but again, small.
So, he had unfair knocks against him, same as AA did, thinking his size wouldnt translate at rb in college.
In overall evaluations, the recruiting sites miss on these types and o lineman the most.

I bet I don't. I doubt Lindsey does much at Oregon State. As for Bell he may not make it anywhere if he can't handle a demotion.

I watched every game of JD's senior year in high school. He was severely underrated. He always dominated every game and was easily the best athlete on the field, every game the entire senior season.
