For the First Time in Ages...

Yeah, I'm going to start my rebuild by just saying... we won a game w/o any resistance for a change.

White making less than our OC is a cosmic injustice. Then again, we are kind of expecting gold from straw but thats why these guys are paid. White didn't walk into a refined, talent wonderland either.
I am encouraged to see ^^^^ you-know-who is high on at least one coach on Rhule's staff. I see a hell of a lot of "gold from straw" being woven on the defensive side of the ball this season.

It's important to note because I recently recall a report from somebody on the board who complained our team plays with "not much emotion" and doesn't "show much confidence" because they're are being told that "nothing will improve until year 3."

So -- like my pal, Mrjfb -- I'm finding the Blackshirts' turnaround this season pretty damn remarkable, in part due to the Coach White's leadership. ;)

Just look back at last season. How many games did Nebraska have a halftime or 4th quarter lead only to lose the game? Last season, Nebraska lost to awful teams they should have beaten.
They did the same thing game one this season. Game six, they don't.
For me that that is progress. There has been progress from game 1 to game 6.
Is the offense bad? Yea, absolutely. Is the team better than last season? I would say yes as well.

We’ll see. This still looks like a 4 win team so not sure how much progress will be made. I’d love to see progress with penalties, turnovers and overall discipline on the field.

If anyone would have asked me how to rebuild the husker football program a quarter of a century ago, I would have said......That's the last thing we need to think about. Now I'm evaluating how rebuilds are done, and who has done it successfully. Life is full of surprises. Or maybe to quote Mr Gump....."Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get". At any rate we ARE in a rebuild situation.......like it or not.

Right now everyone is asking do we have the right coach for a rebuild. I'd bet a lot of money we do. Someday the question will he..........Will Coach Rhule be able to sustain that success. That one is a little trickier. His track record speaks to his ability to rebuild, but because of better opportunities......or maybe he just likes a challenge.....he hasn't stuck around a program long enough to for a clear read. Matt is a dynamo....and people like that love challenges. Time will tell of course, and that question is a long ways down the road at this point. For now, let's just let him right this ship

Yes we have the right HC. OC the jury is out. He will be successful the more wins we get the better players will come. We need them.

I agree. Satterfield has to win my approval at this point.

Unlike some on this board, I am seeing a winning attitude starting to take hold. A team with a losing attitude doesn't make multiple 4th and short stops in a game. With all the turnovers and missed opportunities toward the end of the game, a team with a losing attitude would have laid down. This team didn't.

Second, this game was well coached. Without some stupid and I emphasize stupid penalties, this game would have been a blowout. Despite a slew of crucial injuries, the coaches have found ways to keep the wheels from falling off. I don't know if anyone else noticed but NU had a 15-minute advantage in the TOP for this game. That is Osborne type football. Wear them down.

It is far from a finished product, but progress is being made.

Michigan beats the tar out of us in our stadium.
3 years
You can't expect change overnight
Frost left a talent wasteland.
To do it right, it's got to be a slow rebuild.

Six days later we beat an awful Illinois team.
We've arrived!!

People see what they want to see.

I have yet to witness anyone saying we have arrived what I have seen is fans being happy we got a win against a B1G opponent on the road and those terrible people are happy to get it
I also see some people who are not happy because the win wasn’t by 75 points so they are gonna sh1t on everyone around them and keep sh1tting on everyone until all those around are just as miserable as they are

Yes, people do.

i like what i've seen so far (for the most part) from a stand.back.view of the entire program. rhule seems to be an actual *professional* coach as opposed to frost who was easily overwhelmed while the offensive play calling was waaay to predictable. i called..to myself..last years georgia southern game when i saw who was coach - clay helton. he was a head coach at usc and i just figured he would be able to pick apart/predict frost's calls.

Our Beloved Program FINALLY has some real momentum!!!

Seriously, you have to go all the way back to Mike Riley's second season with Tommy Armstrong to see any semblance of program momentum. (And for the record, the national pundits scoffed at the time and said we hadn't played anybody---uh, and they were right.) The closest thing I can recall to program momentum during the Frost era was a big night game win...over Northwestern. But that was dashed after the next game...and the next...and the next...

We've now won 3 of our last 4. Part of the problem (besides talent and development) has been that we fans have often been the team's worst enemy. With any struggling program, it takes time developing a winning mindset. When you've gotten used to being beaten down, it takes a whole bunch self-confidence to get over the proverbial hump, especially in this in-your-face, social media age. That's where our tradition -- and our lofty expectations -- have worked against us. Whenever we had those rare instances of something good happening under Frost, we'd all rush to 'Okay, NOW we're BACK, BABY!!!" At a time when our players have needed our patience and continued encouragement, they'd find themselves compared to their old National Champion counterparts and found wanting.

You'll notice that Coach Rhule is doing his darnest to remind us that this team HASN'T won much. Instead of taking a "You'd better catch us now" approach, he's embracing this team for who they are, warts and all. And, importantly, he's emphasizing to us fans that we're a work-in-progress that needs to take 'one game at a time' baby steps. We've now got two weeks to recoup and get ready for the second half of the season.

As Coach essentially said in his post-game presser last night, we fans need to set aside our lofty "standards" and rally around the team we've got, the good stuff and the bad. His advice to us fans? Enjoy the ride.

This is what rebuilding a program looks like.
Well stated Dr Fumble

Sorry, a little late to the party…but huh? We’re riding a one game winning streak a week after laying a huge turd on home field. That’s hardly momentum, and definitely not worthy of multiple exclamation points.

If we lose our next game we'll be ridiculed for expecting too much and being spoiled fans.

To each his own. In my way of thinking, winning a B1G road game and being 3-1 over the last four games going into our Bye week is definitely exclamation point-worthy.

(In kind of speaks to how awful its been--the reason I started the thread.)

Call me the board's grumpy "get off my lawn" guy this morning but I find this kind of post annoying. You'd think the same fans who ridiculed the team for their Michigan performance would be 'high-fiving' a big road win against Illinois instead of rolling their eyes.

Gosh, maybe I'm wrong but I could've sworn the goal for Rhule Year One was a bowl game, not a playoff-caliber win against Michigan.

The D is on fire. It has been all season and had some nice moments against Michigan. The ST has been consistently not hurting us and they at times look pretty good like on punt returns. The O has been a WiP, but lacks an identity of what they do. Luckily Illinois was so confused that they couldn't figure us out until we had enough points to survive their late rally. But the D mooted their rally, so there is that.

The players know who they are. They do not seek our affirmations. So the last thing these guys are doing is checking our forum posts to see how they did or did not do.

Yikes. I just checked out the OWH Sports headline story on the Huskers this morning and noticed that Evan Bland wrote this:

"For the first time in seven years, Nebraska brings tangible momentum into a week that is "off " only in the sense that there is no game next Saturday.

Seven straight in-season defeats — ranging from blowouts to gut punches — have led to plenty of self-reflection and self-awareness of the tolls taken by three straight months of college football.

Not these tunnel-vision Huskers who attack each day like another page in a compelling novel."

If anyone is too hung up on the Michigan game - as predicted - they kicked the absolute crap out of Minny Saturday. Hard to measure yourself against a team that is blowing everyone out. They still face PSU and tOSU - but based on watching all 3 Michigan is probably going to smoke both of them too.
