The sad reality is, Riley isn't going anywhere.

To make sure we all know the baseline complaint: Last Saturday, Nebraska lost, at home, to a directional Illinois school from the MAC conference.

No one is arguing that the Huskers are playing great football, but using NIU as your frame of reference in post after post after post isn't making your point.
Huskergod84;n153382 said:And you apparently are happy with mediocrity. To say that its ok to lose to NIU is ridiculous. NO ONE should ever say that we lost to a MAC team but they are have been pretty good so its ok. Being a good MAC team and being a good Power 5 team are totally different. To say that the days of NU being consistently a top team are gone is a bunch of bull. There is no reason NU cant return to that and to think otherwise is to be ok with mediocrity. There is absolutely no reason that NU can not be a team that is consistently considered to be a conference champ and be in the talk of being in the playoffs. NONE.

I agree, saying the days of NU being consistently a top team are gone is crap. Get the right coach and philosophy, and it will happen. That starts with the Chancellor and President, then the AD. They made a good start getting it back with ADSE being gone. Everyone on this board wants the same thing. I personally don't like the idea of starting over AGAIN, but, if this season tanks as bad as I have a feeling it will, it is time. By the way, I predicted 10-2. Just think, I still have a chance of being right, oh never mind, no I don't.[/QUOTE]
Yes you do. It's not likely, but this season can turn around. We will soon see if this staff has what it takes to do it.
As to the threads title, it targets the head coach because, well, he's the head coach. He is the single most important member of the staff. But in its entirety the assistant coaches are number one in my book. I would rather have an average head coach and an outstanding group of assistant coaches, than an outstanding head coach, and average assistant coaches EVERY TIME. This is the primary objective of any head coach, CEO, or politician imo. Surround yourself with people who can do what you cannot.......and them let them do it.
I have always felt that there are three coordinators on a staff.......Offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and coach coordinator (ie the head coach). The latter is the most important. If HCMR fails, it will be because he stumbled putting together his staff imo. He still has time to put it right, but the hourglass is running down. Do right by us Coach and give us the product we want.

In the process of losing that game...
the offense stunkthere was a play where Nebraska couldn't get two yards on a 3rd and 2
the OL was utterly embarrassed and beaten physically by a defensive front that gave away almost 45 pounds per man
they looked like they were merely going through the motions
there was no fire, no sense of urgency, no emotion, nothing
our QB threw two pick sixesDefensively, they played fairly well. They gave up one big play which later led to a touchdown.
When we, as Nebraska fans, see a game being played as poorly as what we saw last Saturday...then yeah, we're going to bring the heat to those coaches. All of these coaches are extremely well paid and we're not getting a good return on this investment.

I get it.
I think YOU miss the point. Your hair was on fire a few years ago, when you decided you were done with Pelini, and at one point you said that "anyone" would be better than him. I'll wager that a few years prior to that, your hair was on fire to get rid of Callahan. And a few years prior to that? Hair-fire, onaccounta Solich.
Now your hair is on fire again.
I simply made an observation. My post wasn't an indictment of you personally (altho' you're a dang fine example of what I was commenting on), or even an indictment of Nebraska Fan generally.
All I said was that we do this little hand-wringing exercise cyclically. This is the point in the cycle where "everything sucks!", and "everybody's gotta go!", and we'll resume the same arguments we've had for 15 years, with different folks taking different positions depending on mood, angle-of-attack, ego-investment and fatigue level, among other things.
It's just what happens. About every three or four years.
