D Line Coach Watch

FWIW, I will say, in Coach Rhule's defense, that he was quick to realize his mistakes (on both sides of the ball) and had been working to quickly correct them. I've been used to watching Husker coaches respond to perceived staffing mistakes by stubbornly doubling-down on the status quo.

This ^^ x 100!!!

I think from listening to Nwarnie that the 3-3-5 is going away. He said he will fill more comfortable as a natural defensive end. Means to me it will be a 4 man front now. I am happy to hear that.
To be frank, we should have stayed in a 4 man front when Rhule took over.

IMO, White came in and made it work while he was here because Ty and Nash clogged up the middle. They were an example of great players making any scheme work. But day-in and day-out, a league like the B1G requires some serious beef up front (the more of it, the better.)

Yes, as I said in another thread our current cupboard of defensive linemen, while not complete, is better stocked for a 4 man front. Nwaneri, Davis and Pietzrack all fit as D ends in a 4 man. Van Popple fits as a 3 tech D tackle. Gabe Moore is all they have, except for freshman, that resembles a 1 tech D tackle.

Not to state the obvious, but (like every other Husker fan) I just want a defense that works, stops our opponents, and limits points allowed to 14 or less per game. To that point, I don't really care what it is classified as: 3-4, 4-3, 3-3, 4-2, 5-2, 6-1, etc.

Butler was a good DC. He lacked talent in his assistants to fix things play by play, quarter by quarter, etc. Problems exposed were not fixed.

No he wasn't a good DC. That's twice he's been given a chance to be a DC and twice he's failed.
Hard to say in one year and being forced to run a defense that he didnt want. We didnt really have the players this year to run the 3-3-5 but yet we ran it. Not sure thats all on Butler.

Well we better care. We ran a defense we didn't have the players for this season and how did that work?

Obviously not at all, but my point wasn't whether we had the players. My point was, I am at the stage where 25 years of mediocrity to piss poor football has me like the diner at the steakhouse: All I want is the steak on my plate, medium rare, and I don't give 2 whiffs what it takes 9r what you have to do to get it there.

Some of you have mentioned the problems of defense not aligning right, gap, etc.
I was blown away by Tom Shatel’s Sunday World Herald article with Snow. Snow talked about gap, eyes on the right places. What really got me was that the guys didn’t know the right calls on the plays. It’s good that Rhule did make changes at the end of the season but in the world of messy politics and finger pointing there is a phrase: What did Rhule know, and WHEN did he know it? Was it just at end of season, beginning or middle of season, I think those are fair questions.IMG_0150.jpeg IMG_0148.jpeg

Coach Rhule's indecision as it concerned Butler was in large part due to scheduling. If I may...

Opened the conference sked with Michigan. If we are being honest that game was not as close as the final score would indicate. Then came the worst teams in the B1G, Michigan St and Maryland, and statistically Nebraska had two decent performances. Rhule was hanging his hat on a solid pass defense. Then came the second legitimate B1G opponent (Minnesota), and like clockwork, Nebraska was humiliated against a tough physical team. Next is where the schedulers threw Rhule a curve ball. the USC and UCLA games gave him the false hope the Blackshirts were holding ground. Again, the pass defense looked legit. Problem is both those West coast schools were B1G in name only. They are still playing a PAC style of ball. Finally, the Huskers were matched with two typical ground and pound B1G programs to finish the season. This is where the defense was exposed. While we all got a taste of what was to come against Minnesota, I don't think Coach Rhule had any idea just how bad Butler's defense was against old school, punch you in the mouth B1G programs. Butler was ill-prepared to handle smashmouth football. His style of defense is more suited to the Big 12. In fairness to Coach Rhule, I think he knew by halftime of the Iowa game Butler was a programmatical non-fit, and took decisive action shortly thereafter.

I think the Huskers are headed in the right direction now. Time will tell.

This is no surprise. I've been watching Verhsan Jackson's breakdowns on FB and for the PSU game he was pointing out they were lined up incorrectly and you could easily see it.
