So it appears that Nebraska is now in a game of chicken with the Big 10.

From what I have heard, the BIG says no games will be played. Nebraska is saying they'll purse every avenue to play this season.

1. Who blinks first?
2. Can NU play a season against non-league opponents and still stay in the Big 10?
3. Would Nebraska actually go back to the Big 12?
4. Would being an indepenedent be a viable option?
5. If we did thumb our noses and play a non-league schedule against other conferences in defiance of the BIGs no play mandate, could/would they kick us out of the conference?
6. What would be the ramifications for both parties?
7. How big of a schmuck is Desmond Howard? (Rhetorical.)

In all of this, who chickens out, NU or the BIG?

Most likely we won't play because logistically its going to be hard to find opponents this late in the game, so none of it matters.

I was listening to a lawyer talk about what would happen legally, and while it was all pretty couched in legalese he basically said Nebraska would win in court if it came down to kicking us out of the conference. We could play and not be in violation of our contract but it would piss off the rest of the conference so unless we are ready to leave its not a wise move.

Personally, I'm in the camp of "we could go independent and be just fine". The Big10 didn't bring us in out of pity, we bring a heck of a lot to the table.

I see why Nebraska took its stand and said it would pursue every opportunity. That made so many people angry, and yet Ohio State's coach said the very same thing before his AD reigned him in later in the day today.

But I don't think it's wise to risk our standing in the B1G just so we can play some meaningless games against BYU, Liberty, or North Dakota State. The B1G is far from perfect, but what are the other options? Nebraska would not fare well as an independent. We already know about serving Texas in the Big XII. Not many options beyond that.

The only way we play is if other schools join us in scheduling games and defying the B1G commish. I don't think that will happen.

BYU came out ahead financially by going independent, FWIW. No, they weren't walking away from a cash cow like the Big10, but we also carry a heck of a lot more weight than they do.

Looking at it like it’s a game of chicken is part of the problem. This isn’t chicken. It’s just people who are working through stuff speaking with their hearts and not their brains, and doing so is putting them and the school in a dangerous position. When things cool down a bit, reason will prevail.

Imo if Warren made mistakes, and I don't know enough to say that he did, they are three fold; 1) he listened to primarily to academics (ie presidents) instead of balancing the decision with coaches, players, AD's, and health professionals 2) He responded to sincere concerns with too much bluster, and 3) He came out with his decision before the other three conferences made their decisions.

If he feels sports are so dangerous, it would have been wise to get the presidents to agree that campuses would be closed to students as well. Sports appears to be a scapegoat here at first blush. This may not be the case, but it's a bad look without explanations.

It would have also been wise to make a statement that he understands the concerns of schools, such as NU and OSU wanting to play until proven it was untenable, but then listed reasons for discontinuing now...…….and not publicly calling for ouster if everyone doesn't fall in line.

As it is, it appears that he called it quits solely on liability and optics, and not really with the health of student athletes in mind. Being first to the gate could be smart, or very embarrassing. If he is wrong, he is going to have a much harder time negotiating TV contracts than his predecessor in the future.

EDIT: I should have put this post under the "Commish" thread.....my bad. If it needs to be moved so there isn't a hijack, please do so.

The Big 10 and PAC 12 cowed to the fear mongering liberal media. Big 12 and SEC are playing, what’s different?

There is more to this than football. We would walk away from the academic advantages the Big 10 brought. We are not going anywhere.

Scott doesn't need to apologize for wanting to play, my guess, there will be a face saving move on both parts and a cumbia moment.

Great points all but some are still missing the bottom line here.....there is an awfully lot of 2 stepping going on Nationwide.....who is gonna play anyway.....who is allowed to play.....how big will the rift get if some do and some don't ...will the machine apply pressure outside of its own conference......you get a reaction like we have seen already....I'm talking about the "you jump in first and after I see if you survive then I will jump also" way.....and who knows where this all goes.
No one ever said Nebraska was looking to change conferences except those idiots at ESPN Wilbon & Howard....you re listen or re watch everything Coach Frost said or any representative of Nebraska said and no where will you find where it was even slightly talked about much less threatened as The Idiots at ESPN would have you believe.....so their whole butt hurt reactions are simply put ludicrous.
Sad thing is they have a fairly big platform from which to carry on......but when this is all over let's just see who has egg on their face and who looks the most honest.

If nothing else, Nebraska is national over the past few days. If you want to jump down Frost's throat for wanting to play football, knock yourselves out. Wilbon is an absolute clown and Howard is a pathetic little hater who can't get over the butthurt of Ohio State owing them over the past 15 years. His team is irrelevant on the national stage so he's got to lash out at someone else.

I am the first to say I do not know whats going to happen and my 8 ball got stolen when I got robbed. BUT isn't there room in the Big 12 already? They have two spots available, we could stipulate who goes with us, say Michigan or OSU or PSU. That would squeeze a spincter shut, no? For that matter we could drag Iowa and Wisky with us too. mmmmm Wonder what Mr Minnesota would say to that?

I am guessing this announcement means that any football will be with the B1G's blessing?

I think Frost and Co are fighting for what the kids want and that is great. I'm not sure it can happen but they at least have passion. Unlike Smiling Mike as someone on here called him. :)

Nebraska leadership reconfirms allegiance to Big Ten

It means it's over. No husker football this year. Email was sent out to season ticket holders today. Thanks a lot China....

And here I go and pop back on BHF because of the talk that now OSU was also talking about looking for ways to play this fall, and MAYBE that meant the Huskers could also find a way to play, just in time to get this news.... :mad0003:

I thought Nebraska fans were a "the buck stops at the top" kind of group. I mean when Solich, Callahan, Pelini and Riley struggled, some here said it was entirely their fault, because they were poor leaders, motivators and trainers. If anybody brought up other factors that might impact our success, they were castigated as whiners and making excuses. It wasn't "Missouri's" fault that we lost. It was our coach.

This thing started in China, but isn't China just another "Missouri?" I mean, doesn't a great coach, a great leader, create a strategy to defeat their opponent? Doesn't he look at what works and implement those strategies to maximize the team's strengths and minimize their weaknesses? Doesn't a great coach/leader put together the best staff he can of people who really understand how to do their jobs and give the team the best chance for success? Doesn't a great coach/leader motivate and unify the team toward one goal? A great coach doesn't make excuses and blame others. He doesn't splinter his team into factions. He pulls his group together, let's them know he has their back no matter where they come from or what they believe, and builds them into a united bunch that can't be beat.

We are talking about China now, aren't we?
